President Muhammadu Buhari has concluded to adopt dialogue as the way to go to resolve the worsening insecurity situation in the south-east, Nigeria.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, disclosed this shortly after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, alongside the President’s Chief of Staff, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, on Sunday, in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Addressing state house correspondents after the meeting, Ngige informed that the President has also enabled series of dialogues to be held with leaders in the region.

He stressed that discussions at the meeting equally encapsulated what the south-east is demanding from the federal government as well as what the government plans to do for the region to assuage the feelings of the people.

He stressed that complaints from the national labour union regarding a breach of agreement had reached the President and they have begun plans to halt any further friction in the midst of the fragile situation within Kaduna State.

Members of the South East Governors’ Forum had earlier condemned the activities of secessionist groups in the region and other parts of the country.

They distanced themselves from the agitations of such groups, frowning on the violence that ensued which led to the loss of lives and destruction of properties.

The governors, in a bid to tackle the security challenges and restore peace in the region, went beyond their political differences and met on Saturday in Enugu State .

“We condemn in totality, the activities of violent secessionist groups in the South East and elsewhere; we firmly proclaim that we do not support them, they do not speak for South East,” said the Chairman of the Forum and Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, at the end of the meeting.

As part of efforts targeted at reducing the cost of governance, the Federal Government of Nigeria has directed the revenue mobilisation commission to review the allowances of political office holders including governors and lawmakers.

Senator Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, made this known on Wednesday, during a meeting with members of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Speaking further, Ngige also decried the huge sum of recurrent expenditure in the proposed 2020 budget, insisting that there is no option other than to cut down the cost of running the government.

He said, “we cannot allow the government to shut down the economy because they want to pay salaries and wages. The 2020 budget of N10.3trillion has N3.88trillion as personal cost without an overhead. A budget that is 76% recurrent and 24% capital, for me, this is nothing to cheer about.

“Revenue mobilisation commission will also beam a searchlight and review what they are giving for political officeholders. Some of the allowances in their prescriptions are not allowances that should be gotten.

“What is a governor doing with hazard allowance? What is the hazard about, when the state is feeding him and his family? What is a governor doing with constituency allowance? The whole state is his constituency.

“These are things that will be holistically reviewed”.

The Minister, however added that both workers and politicians must be ready to make sacrifices so that more money will be available for infrastructure.

EFFORTS made by the federal government to end the ongoing industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has again suffered another setback on Monday as it failed to reach an agreement with the leaders of the union.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, presided over a resumed negotiation with the striking university lecturers at the ministry in Abuja.

Surprisingly, unlike previous meetings which ended inconclusively, ASUU National President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, led other leaders of the union out of the meeting.

Professor Ogunyemi, also refused to speak to reporters about why the union leaders walked out of the meeting which lasted about two hours.

The minister, had earlier assured the ASUU leaders that attention would be paid to three critical demands which included salary shortfalls, university revitalization, and earned allowances of ASUU members.

But, with the recent development, academic activities will remain grounded in concerned universities across the country after the ASUU president said earlier that the union would wait until today before taking a decision on whether or not to suspend the industrial action.
