The lawmaker representing Ibarapa East/Ido Federal Constituency of Oyo State and Chairman, House Committee on Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Hon. Aderemi Oseni, has described the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) launched by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a “game-changer” for the future of Nigerian youths.

Oseni remarked at the weekend during a grassroots stakeholders’ engagement held at Erinkojaobe/Owode community in Ibadan.

He said the student loan scheme is a bold step towards bridging the financial gap that prevents many brilliant but indigent students from accessing tertiary education. According to him, the policy underscores the President’s commitment to youth empowerment and national development.

Reflecting on his journey, the lawmaker narrated how he benefitted from the late Chief Bola Ige’s free education policy in the old Oyo State. The programme, introduced in 1979, he said, gave children from underprivileged backgrounds an opportunity to pursue education.

“I had already concluded arrangements to travel to Lagos to learn how to sell meat,” he recounted. “But God, through Bola Ige’s free education policy, changed my story. I was enrolled at Akufo Community Secondary School without paying a kobo. That opportunity paved the way for me to become an engineer today.”

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Oseni said the experience continues to inspire his commitment to educational development and grassroots empowerment, even before he was elected into office.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Idowu Ayodele, it was noted that under the Remi Oseni Education Support Scheme, no fewer than 1,053 indigent but brilliant students have benefitted from free West African Examinations Council (WAEC) registration since 2024, while 1,206 others received support for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examinations.

Continuing, “This year alone, the support was extended to students in Igbeti, where WAEC fees for about  200 candidates were fully paid. Many of them have successfully passed their exams and secured admission into various tertiary institutions,” the statement said.

It further stated, “In addition to sponsoring examinations, the scheme also provides scholarships, bursaries, and tuition assistance to students in higher institutions across Oyo State. Hon. Oseni has also renovated schools from his personal funds, facilitated the construction of classroom blocks, and distributed educational materials.

“Without God and education, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” he said. “That’s why education remains central to my constituency projects. It is the most enduring legacy we can leave for the next generation.”

As NELFUND gains momentum—with over 500,000 applications already processed out of the 600,000 students who registered on the portal—Oseni expressed optimism that the initiative will serve as a lifeline to thousands of aspiring students.

“President Tinubu has demonstrated his commitment to building a knowledge-driven economy,” he added. “As someone who has personally experienced the power of education, I assure my constituents that this is just the beginning. More support is on the way.”

Earlier in his remarks, Chairman of the 13 Joint Communities, Rotarian Afolabi Salisu, praised the lawmaker for his developmental strides and people-centered approach, describing him as “a promise keeper” and “a true representative of the people.”

He also lauded Oseni’s continued grassroots engagement and harmonious relationship with the electorate.

The incident, occurring at around 7:44 pm on Tuesday, resulted in the tragic deaths of some individuals and injuries to others.

In a statement by his media aide, Idowu Ayodele, on Wednesday, Oseni also condoled with the people and government of the state, describing the devastating explosion as unfortunate. He prayed to God for comfort and a swift recovery for the injured.

The Ibadan-born politician and Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) noted that the explosion, akin to any disaster in the country, was a national tragedy.

The statement quoted Oseni, “I want to commiserate with families who lost loved ones and all those affected by the explosion in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, on Tuesday (yesterday).

“I also condole with the Oyo State government and all residents affected by the unfortunate incident, which left many injured and destroyed property.

“I have received with sadness the news of this unfortunate incident which caused the loss of lives and property.

“A misfortune of whatever scale anywhere is a tragedy to the country, and while the relevant authorities make efforts to determine the cause of the incident, I send my deepest and profound sympathies to the victims, their families, the government, and the people of Oyo State”, it added.

This includes the inauguration of the Board of Registered Trustees, Advisory Governing Board, Central Executive Management Team, and sixty Special Assistants for the federal constituency in Ibadan on Tuesday.

Oseni, an advocate for grassroots participation in governance, disclosed this in a statement released by his media aide, Idowu Ayodele, on Sunday.

The new initiative seeks to foster a stronger connection between the lawmaker and the constituents, aiming to tackle the specific issues that they encounter regularly.

According to him, the selected Special Assistants, chosen across the twenty wards, are expected to play pivotal roles in supporting his mission to rebuild and restore the lost glory of the federal constituency through credible and purposeful representation.

Oseni, who is also the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), said the Special Assistants will serve as a bridge between him and the constituents to ensure the effective delivery of election promises and smooth office functioning.

In addition to the inauguration, a mega empowerment programme is scheduled to take place to contribute to creating a healthy and secure society in the state.

Oseni said, “It is crucial to emphasise that we are set to launch a groundbreaking empowerment program, perhaps, the first of its kind. There is no limit to what we are willing to provide for the constituents who entrusted me with their mandate.

“Our goal is to significantly diminish poverty, unemployment, and lack of productivity within the federal constituency, with a particular focus on women and youth. We meticulously chose the items through extensive research, aligning with the immediate needs of the beneficiaries to foster self-reliance and productivity,” stated the lawmaker.

All guests are requested to be seated by 10:30 am at the Community Primary School (Farm Settlement), Idigbaro Junction, Ologuneru Ido/Eruwa Road, Ibadan—the designated venue for the programme.

It is expected to be attended by the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state and the federal constituency, traditional rulers, community leaders, and religious leaders, among other dignitaries.

The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Hon. Aderemi Oseni, unveiled an ambitious plan to revolutionise Nigeria’s road infrastructure on Tuesday.

Addressing members at the inaugural meeting of the committee in Abuja, the nation’s capital, Oseni recognised the challenges that have plagued FERMA in the past, such as insufficient funding, outdated infrastructure, and bureaucratic obstacles, which have led to deteriorating road conditions, accidents, and economic losses. According to him, the new committee is determined to address these issues head-on.

The structural engineer, representing Ibarapa East/Ido Federal Constituency further unveiled a comprehensive 14-point legislative agenda that will serve as a roadmap for the rejuvenation of FERMA and the transformation of Nigeria’s road maintenance. In a special Eid message contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by his media aide, Idowu Ayodele, and made available to journalists in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, Oseni encouraged Nigerians to keep hope alive as the challenges will soon fade away.

The APC chieftain, also noted that no matter the challenges the country is going through now, the nation will come out stronger, adding that President Bola Tinubu has started on the right footing as he faced Nigeria’s future with renewed hope.

While felicitating adherents of the Islamic faith in his federal constituency and across the globe, the lawmaker encouraged them to embody the values of sacrifice in their daily lives, sacrificing their desires, ego, and material possessions for pleasing Allah as well as benefiting others.
