AT LEAST 20 people have been confirmed killed following the collapse of a three-storey building situated at the Ita-Faaji area of Lagos Island on Wednesday, according to the Lagos State Government.

Disclosing this in a statement issues by the Director Public Affairs of the Lagos State Ministry of Health, Adeola Salako, on Friday, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, confirmed that 20 victims were brought in dead to the Lagos Island General Hospital, while 45 survivors were being managed at the Lagos Island General Hospital, Massey Street Children Hospital, Onikan Health Centre, Gbagada General Hospital, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, and the National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, as well as the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

The statement reads, “out of the 45 survivors known to the state government, as at this morning, 14 (10 children and 4 adults) are still receiving medical attention at Lagos Island General Hospital. According to the Medical Director of Lagos Island General Hospital, Dr Ismail Gani-Kale, more survivors will still be discharged to their families before the close of work today,”

Though, the Minister for Health, Professor Isaac Adewole has visited the victims of the collapsed building at the Lagos Island General Hospital.

The minister lauded Lagos State for its prompt response and medical care for the survivors.

” I’m greatly impressed by the promptness of the emergency response of the state and the efficient health care deployed to ensure that the survivors of the sad incident are stabilized and kept alive”, Adewole said.

He also applauded the government for granting free medical care to the victims in order to remove any barriers to prompt, qualitative and comprehensive care needed for the rehabilitation of the victims.

Dr Idris, however dismissed the claim in some quarters of some of the survivors being charged fees for health care. He warned that any government official caught extorting any survivor or demanding for gratification would be made to face strict disciplinary actions.

“Demanding that survivors who are already traumatized to pay for medical bills is not only unethical but also criminal,” he said, while calling on family members who have evidence of such extortion to contact the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr Titilayo Goncalves with authentic evidence.

The commissioner also expressed appreciation to corporate organizations and well-meaning individuals who had been donating items and other forms of support to the survivors.

NIGERIA’S Health Minister, Prof. Isaac Adewole is set to take the reelection bid of President Muhammadu Buhari and other APC candidates to the six south western states and Yoruba speaking people in Kwara and Kogi states under the initiative of ‘Buhari Leekan`Si’.

Adewole, who is an academic administrator turned politician is the motivator of the ‘Buhari Leekan`Si initiative’ which is an operational political structure committed to the propagation of the Buhari achievements in the last 44months as president as a leverage for his reelection in the February 16th, 2019 elections. The initiative as part of its statutory obligation is to encourage participation in the electoral system in all the wards of Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, lagos states, with extension to certain parts of Kwara and Kogi states.

Contained in a press statement issued by the Director of Media & Publicity of the Buhari Leekan`Si initiative, Owoyokun Samson and made available to journalists in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital explained that the initiative is to complement the party’s campaign structure, adding that the minister is billed to meet with religious and traditional leaders.

“He will also meet with professionals in all the major sectors who are key components of the Nigeria economy and registered associations of artisans across the states, the aim of the stakeholders meeting is to motivate and persuade them on the need to return Mr. President back to office and all other APC candidates in their respective states so as to complete the restoration agenda which he has kick started in 2015 in all facets of Nigeria including the health sector”.

Adewole continued, “We have built on what we met at the health ministry in November 2015. The Muhammadu Buhari Administration has over the last 3 years conducted strategic repositioning of the nation’s health system. We havee developed the National Health Policy 2016, initiated an ambitious programme of revitalizing 10,000 Primary Health Care Centres (PHCs) across 10,000 political wards across the country. We have upgraded over 4000 PHCs in partnership with States governments and development partners.

“We are implementing the Save One Million Lives Initiative to facilitate rapid development by states of the Primary Health Care System. This will provide the opportunity for each State in Nigeria to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) individually. The SOML-PforR’s is focused on improving primary healthcare and increasing insurance coverage especially for the most vulnerable in society. Also, we have developed the Second National Strategic Health Development Plan (2018-2022), re-established the National HIV Treatment and Prevention Programmem. Implementing Upgrade of Cancer Treatment Facilities in 8 Tertiary Health Institutions. The Cancer Centre in National Hospital is fully functional and can treat up to 100 patients daily

“We have equally supported Bio-engineering programme in LUTH and 3 other Institutionsn, initiated a Public-Private Initiative (Bio-Vaccines Nigeria) on local vaccine production. As you may be aware, our vision is to ensure universal coverage, to make health care accessible to all Nigerians irrespective of their social status. Our bid to ensure Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is gaining momentum as we have revived which is a pointer to why our vaccination for children has improved, child and maternal mortality dropped, malaria prevalence crashed and rate of the communicable and non-communicable diseases are on the down ward trend”, he concluded.

Federal Ministry of Health in collaboration with UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and other partners has inaugurated three key reproductive health policies to accelerate family planning uptake, as well as reduce maternal mortality and morbidity in Nigeria.

Prof. Isaac Adewole, the Minister of Health, who was represented by the Director of Family Health, Dr. Adebimpe Adebiyi, unveiled the documents in Abuja on Tuesday.

The documents that were unveiled are: the National Guidelines on Safe Termination of Pregnancy for Legal indications and National Depot-MedroxyProgesterone Acetate-Sub Cutaneous (DMPA-SC) Accelerated Introduction and Scale-up Plan (2018-2022).

DMPA-SC is a modern family planning method that combines the contraceptive drug and needle into a single unit. It is administered sub-coetaneously (under the skin).

The other documents, also inaugurated by the minister, was the Global Family Planning Visibility and Analytical Network with the National Logistics Management Information System (NAVISION).

“The documents will support the government and its partners to speed their efforts on family planning.

“It will also catalyze efforts to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity thereby improving the health of women and girls in Nigeria,’’ Adewole said.

Also, the Acting Country Representative of UNFPA, Dr. Eugene Kongnyuy noted that the three documents was very important to UNFPA.

Kongnyuy, represented by Dr. Titi Duro-Aino, a Reproductive Health Analyst, UNFPA, said: “The documents that are very dear to UNFPA are the National Depot-MedroxyProgesterone Acetate Sub Cutaneous (DMPA-SC) Accelerated Introduction and Scale-up Plan (2018-2022).

“The DMPA-SC will allow women in rural and hard-to-reach areas access and use it to prevent unwanted pregnancies.’’

According to him, the Global Family Planning Visibility and Analytical Network allow visibility into the supply chain.

“It enables the stakeholders to track exactly where family planning commodities are to avoid overstocking and stock-out of these commodities.

“It also enables women who need the commodities to get it as at when due,’’ he said

Kongnyuy said the commodities were free at all public health facilities in the country.

He said the third document, the National Guidelines on Safe Termination of Pregnancy for Legal indications, would ensure that reproductive rights of women were upheld.

Federal Ministry of Health on Monday disclosed that it was working with major stakeholders to ban flavored tobacco, including `Shisha’ to proctect children from getting enticed with the product across the country.

The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, stated this while briefing newsmen in commemoration of 2018 World No Tobacco Day on Monday.

Adewole noted that tobacco, whether Shisha, cigar or cigarette, was harmful to the health, stressing that the ministry was working with key stakeholders toward an eventual ban of the product in the country.

https://iso.keq.mybluehost.me/9247-2/

He added that people import tobacco under a different brand called `Shisha’, saying that flavored tobacco was not acceptable in Nigeria.

Corroborating the position of the minister, the Director-General of Consumer Protection Council (CPC) Mr Babatunde Irukera, informed that Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) was in charge of creating industrial standard of products in Nigeria.

Irukera further said that SON Technical Committee in respect of tobacco standard in the country placed Shisha in the class of any tobacco product, hence, it was not an illegal product now.

He disclosed that the ministry had developed a work plan on some provisions of the National Tobacco Control (NTC) Act which stakeholders could immediately implement before the approval of the NTC Regulations.

He explained that the work plan had outlined education, enforcement and monitoring for compliance, including the ban on sale of tobacco products to and by anyone below 18 years of age, among others

The minister said the 2018 World No Tobacco Day has “Tobacco and Heart Disease” as its theme and the slogan is “Tobacco Breaks the Heart – Choose Health, Not Tobacco”.

He maintained that the theme and slogan highlighted the link between the use of tobacco products and heart and other cardiovascular diseases.

He said the theme called for increased awareness on the impact of tobacco use and exposure to second-hand smoke on cardiovascular health.

The 2018 World No Tobacco Day therefore provides Nigeria the opportunity to make commitments to promote heart health by protecting people against the use of tobacco products.

Country Representative of World Health Organisation, Dr Wondi Alemu, said the 2018 World No Tobacco Day focused on raising awareness on the link between tobacco and cardiovascular diseases.

Alemu, who was represented by Dr Rex Mpazanje, said tobacco and cardiovascular diseases were the world leading causes of death.

“Tobacco use is the leading cause of cardiovascular diseases after high blood pressure, with up to half of all tobacco users dying prematurely from tobacco related causes,’’ he said.

The country representative urged Federal Government to expedite action toward the passage of the regulation to enforce the National Tobacco Act 2015 and enforcement of some provisions of the Act.
