Professor Idowu Olayinka, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan has stressed on the need for another federal university in Oyo state.

The Vice Chancellor who expresses concerns when the Commissioner representing Oyo state at the Federal Character Commission, Prof. Adeniyi Olowofela presented the core mandates of the commission to him during a courtesy call to the institution, wondered why population is not an integral part of federal character indices.

He also promised the institution’s support to FCC .

Professor Olayinka emphasized that Oyo state is large enough to have another Federal University and Polytechnic apart from the premier University of Ibadan.

The Federal Commissioner, Olowofela, earlier in his remarks informed that the National Assembly is presently considering the possibility of creating another University in the state based on the bill sponsored by Senator Abdulfatai Buhari representing Oyo North Senatorial District and others.

The former Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology in the state hinted that the commission may also need the intellectual prowess of the citadel of learning in some of its key mandates.

According to Professor Olowofela, the mandates included: equitable distribution of manpower post, and equitable distribution of socio economic amenities among the federating units.

The ex-Ido Local Government boss also recalled the historical creation of the commission on 27th December, 1995. He added that being the date of the inauguration by the then Head of State and Commander in Chief of Armed Forces, the first board of FCC was backed by decree 34 of 1996 and grafted in 1999 constitution among 14 independent commission.

He informed that President Muhammud Buhari inaugurated the current Executive Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Muheeba Farida Dankaka and 37 other members on July, 2, 2020 .

He further disclosed that the commission will audit all MDAs to ascertain the compliance to FCC principles.

University of Ibadan Vice Chancellor, Prof. Idowu Olayinka yesterday urged the entire alumni of the institution not to relent in assisting the University in various ways, saying, UI still needs much more assistance in order to maintain its prestigious premier position in the country and Africa.

Prof. Olayinka made this plead while commissioning the solar facilities donated by four alumni of the university to the Office of the Media Assistant to the VC, Mr. Sunday Saanu.

Saanu had complained about the poor electricity supply to his office before four alumni of 1990 graduating set, including Hadrat Hameed Azeez, Adebowale Oyedeji both from Agricultural Economics department with Olu Odugbemi and Adenike Oduela Ajetunmobi from Agronomy department came to his rescue by jointly contributing money to procure the solar facilities.

Commissioning the facilities, Vice Chancellor while thanking the donors remarked that “the current realities have shown that government alone cannot adequately fund education, adding that, “this is the reason we shall continue to call on all our alumni not to abandon UI which made them by offering them quality education. Our alumni must continue to support us so that UI can continue to maintain its prestigious premier position, not only in Nigeria but also in Africa and in the world “.

“This University needs a lot of things. Most of our facilities are becoming old and decrepit. They require replacements which demand huge resources. It is only when our alumni like these four donors come to our rescue that we can have respite”, he stated.

While appreciating those alumni who have been assisting the institution with various kinds of benefactions, Prof. Olayinka called on those who have not shown up to come back and check out their departments, faculties and the university with a view to knowing where they could help, stressing “our needs our infinite”.

As part of its mission to contribute to the transformation of society through creativity and innovation, University of Ibadan (UI), has concluded arrangements to launch a book packaged to tackle joblessness and unemployment.

The Media Assistant to the the University’s Vice Chancellor, Mr Sunday Saanu, who disclosed this on his verified Facebook account on Tuesday informed that the book Entitled ‘From School To Work’, written by one of the UI’s alumni, Prince Abiodun Lufadeju in partnership with the University is deliberately designed to assist both graduate and undergraduate students to overcome the challenges of unemployment.

According to the author, “the book is a paradigm shift instrument to begin the psychological reprocessing and mindset re-engineering of our graduates. It is to inject the urgently needed employment orientation into our educational system. In the process, it will engage our undergraduates in some cognitive realignment, grooming them on how to convert their natural potential to employment and commercial enterprise ”

Also, three UI’s lecturers had reviewed the book as the University of Ibadan is considering making the book one of its General Studies materials with foreword written by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka.

“The public presentation of the book has been slated for Wednesday 27 November, 2019 at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan by 10 am”, Saanu said.

Against the background of the prevailing competition among the candidates seeking admission to the University of Ibadan in the on-going 2019/2020 admission exercise, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Idowu Olayinka has provided insights into the fate of those who couldn’t gain admission through merit, saying their chances are dicey.

The Vice – Chancellor disclosed that gaining admission to UI has become so competitive to the extent that once a candidate couldn’t secure admission through merit, the chances of getting admission through a change of course becomes so dicey because nobody can authoritatively predict what may happen.

According to Prof. Idowu, “the point is that some courses have too many candidates seeking admission. When the numerous unsuccessful applicants into those programmes later decide to apply for a change of course, they would be contesting for the very few available slots in those courses. It is not even impossible for those courses to have been filled by those candidates that picked them as First Choice”

“Candidates who missed admission through merit have been mounting pressure on almost everyone they know in UI, seeking assistance whenever it comes to the time of change of course. Some Professors were seen openly complaining of pressure from relatives, friends, family members, with a few of them saying, “these people should know that UI’s admission is merit-driven. I am handicapped. I can’t help many of these requests”, he added.

According to the information scooped from Sunday Sannu’s facebook page, the media aide to Prof Idowu, a parent , Engineer Olumide Ahmadu, has paid glowing tributes to the culture and tradition of transparency and merit in the undergraduate admission process at the University of Ibadan.

Also, Engr. Ahmadu whose daughter missed last year’s admission to Medicine and Surgery by two points disclosed that her daughter insisted on Medicine this year, therefore prepared very hard and eventually scored 80% .

According to Engr. Ahmadu in a letter to the Head of Department of Crop Protection and Environmental Biology, Professor Femi Awodoyin, shared by the VC, “to be honest with you, I prefer UI system of conducting admission. It gives room for fairness and UI runs most transparent admission in Nigeria. It is not for the best but for the BEST of BESTs”

While thanking Prof. Awodoyin for the encouragement to give UI another trial, the elated father stated that UI’s admission was very transparent and without sentiment as the survival is for the fittest.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Oyo state chapter, has said the series of successful armed robbery attacks at the University of Ibadan (UI), showed that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Idowu Olayinka has lost control of security and lack coherent strategy to counter the menace that has continued to threaten the lives of innocent students.

NANS, also called on security agencies in the state to rise up to the occasion and put in place a security architecture that can guarantee the safety of all in the citadel of learning. It further encouraged the students to come to terms with reality and rise peacefully in unity to reject the skyrocketing insecurity.

The leadership of NANS, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Comrade Asubiojo Olujuwon Marshal on Monday, in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital and made available to Mega Icon Magazine, however, called on the Federal Ministry of Education to as matter of urgency review the credibility of Prof. Idowu Olayinka to continue as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, alleging that he has failed by the standard of Nigerian students, parents, global observers and sympathisers.

It would be recalled that sequel to the robbery incident at the Obafemi Awolowo Hall of the University of Ibadan (UI), the female block of Abdusalami Abubakar Postgraduate hall of the same university was attacked on Sunday by armed men.

The security man on patrol, as learnt, was tied up by the armed men and the invaders attacked two male students who got in their way.

According to NANS, “going by the unremitting attacks in the university, it is not out of place to conclude that the Prof. Olayinka led administration and his praise singers have lost control of the security situation of the institution. His administration, aside lacking capacity to keep the lives and properties of our students safe has been openly exhibiting an intolerable level of nonchalance to the welfare of Nigerian students placed in his care”.

“It is now beyond reasonable doubt that all the present administration of the university can do perfectly is the suspension of the Students’ Union, which should serve as her partner in enhancing safety and despotic rustication of student leaders.

“This attack is coming after series of successful armed robbery attacks within the vicinity of University of Ibadan in barely two months. This is an institution that should serve as pace setter for other sister universities, being the first and ‘the best’, – the university is now a target and practice center for armed robbers, coming in at will, to injure, molest and threaten students while carting away their valuables.

“We maintain that trying to combat insecurity in the University without active involvement of students is just a hoax. We therefore call for immediate reinstatement of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union and our rusticated comrades”, the statement reads.

Meanwhile, the management of the University through its Chairman, Council Committee on Security, Prof Ademola Aremu said the university is reviewing its security architecture to forestall future attacks.

Prof. Aremu, who visited the female hostel attacked by gunmen on Sunday in the company of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, also disclosed that the police were working hard to track the invaders.

He noted that the invaders have shown a pattern in their operation by attacking female students during holidays when halls are sparsely populated.

University of Ibadan (UI) Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka has commended the Senior Staff Housing Committee (SSCH) for its ingenuity in converting an abandoned garage into a one-roomed apartment, housing three singles respectively.

The abandoned garage along Phillipson road was discovered by the SSHC and decided to turn it to a residential house through direct labour.
Prof. Olayinka who thanked the Committee for its creativity said “this will also reduce pressure on the administration as we face enormous demands from our staff members who want to stay campus.

“Many people have inundated me with the request to give them note to the SSHC so that they could be given accommodation on campus. The truth is that the demands outstrip the supply. The houses are not just there. I understand there are over 700 pending applications from our staff who want to live on campus”, the VC said, adding, “whereas if we could provide accommodation for staff, productivity level will increase ”

He stressed, “we shall continue to support the SSHC so as to empower it to construct more houses for the needs of our people”.

Earlier, the SSHC Chairman, Prof. Musiliu Onilude had disclosed that his Committee was under intense pressure from the staff, wondering why many people were anxious to stay on campus.

According to him, “I don’t know why many people are interested in staying on campus. Even those who have built their own houses in town are eager to come and stay on Campus. I have been staying in my house in town over the years, and I am still there. But I just don’t know why people are abandoning their houses in town to come and stay on campus. We are really facing pressure ”

Prof. Onilude hinted that the newly constructed building cost N6. 5million through direct labour.

The building has been allocated.

At least seventy five graduates of the University of Ibadan (UI) have been inducted into Pharmacy profession with the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Idowu Olayinka admonishing the inductees to be good ambassadors of the institution.

The Vice Chancellor, who had earlier inaugurated multimillion Naira newly built Pharmacy faculty where he promised to continue to judiciously spread the resources of the University in an equitable manner, advised the new Pharmacists to make positive impact to the healthcare delivery system by contributing to the distribution of quality medicines in the country.

“As at today, this Faculty which became full-fledged in 1983 has produced nearly 800 Pharmacists who are contributing immensely to the development of Nigeria and other nations of the world, either in the pharmaceutical, health or other sectors. Recently, Mrs. Olutayo Arikawe , an alumnae of this University was named the Pharmacist of the Year in the United Kingdom”, the VC submitted.

While reiterating his commitment to the betterment of UI, Prof Olayinka hinted, “my vision for UI is to make it a research-intensive institution for the transformation of Nigeria as a 21st century knowledge-driven, rapidly globalizing economy”, adding, “my mission is to create a high-performance University with outstanding teaching and learning facilities that is locally relevant, nationally preeminent and globally competitive and to produce graduates who are eminently employable ”

He, then called for assistance from the parents, alumni, and well-wishers so as to make UI less dependent on government for funding.

Earlier in his address, the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Oluwatoyin Odeku had thanked the VC for devoting resources to build the Faculty complex, urging the University’s Management to complete the project by procuring furniture and other necessary facilities.

In his lecture, the keynote speaker, Pharmacist Gbenga Falabi advised the inductees to build on their knowledge as they go into the world, saying courage, competencies and professionalism are required of them if they must make impact in the society.

Also, prizes were presented to those who distinguished themselves with Bamgboye, Adeboye Olakunle emerging as the Best Graduating Pharmacy Student.

Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Executive Secretary, Prof. Suleiman Elias Bogoro has called on scholars and researchers to collaborate in their research efforts in order to record better impact, adding that there is a limit to an individual effort.

Prof. Bogoro spoke at the commissioning of the Renewable Resources Center located at the Department of Environmental Health Sciences, Faculty of Public Health, University of Ibadan which was funded by the combination of 2011 to 2014 TETFund normal intervention.

The multidisciplinary research efforts of the Centre culminated in various projects including biogas and accessories, electricity generation, spent slurry utilization for liquid and solid organic fertilizer, mushroom cultivation, smokeless charcoal, Syngas from less significant wastes and household composter among others.

Elated by the innovations, the TETFund boss noted that working together in projects like these goes a long way to develop the country in its “waste to wealth ” campaign, adding, “working together also guarantee effective mentoring of the younger ones”

Prof. Bogoro who challenged universities to keep the problems of the society in focus in their research, pointed out that the gown must be relevant to the town by cultivating the industry, saying “expectations of leadership are from the universities”

Earlier, one of the leaders of the research team, Prof. M. K. C. Sridhar recalled that the concept of a Renewable Resources Centre began in 1980s when his researches were centered on environment, pollution, wastes, community health and wellbeing.

According to him, “the charcoal we produced with the kiln is the product of March 9, 2019 storm which devastated UI campus resulting in several trees falling. We have over 25 projects which we can proudly market including photo therapy lamp for neonatal jaundice treatment”

In his own remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Idowu Olayinka thanked TETFund for the investment and intervention, expressing optimism that “with more funding, UI is ready to scale up much of the knowledge that has been incubated ”

Some of the innovations were later displayed to the amazement of the gathering.

Towards official commencement of School of Business in the University of Ibadan (UI) which is being facilitated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), both institutions have signed an agreement, affirming commitment to the proposed establishment of Centre of Excellence.

The CBN had in 2010 promised to establish Centre of Excellence in UI and two other universities in the northern and southern regions where there will be excellent training in economic related courses in order to facilitate the availability of adequate and skilled manpower for the Financial System Strategy (FSS) in pursuit of Vision 2020.

Consequently, the CBN built a Faculty and Hostel facilities in UI, but these facilities have not been officially handed over to the institution for the commencement of the programme. The School of Economics which shall have a Faculty status and be headed by a Dean will run four Departments including Economics, Banking and Finance, Accounting, as well as Marketing and Consumer Studies.

Speaking during the agreement signing ceremony in his office, UI Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka who thanked the CBN for the investment prayed for the immediate commencement of the programme with earnest disbursement of resources for the effective take- off of the collaborative programme.

“I wish to recommend that after today, the commissioning and handover of the building be done expeditiously”, he added.

Prof. Olayinka who thanked the past CBN governors including Prof. Charles Soludo, His Royal Highness, the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, and the current governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele also lauded the efforts of the past UI VCs, such as Prof. Olufemi Bamiro and Prof. Isaac Folorunso Adewole for their role in bringing the project to this level.

Earlier in his remarks, the CBN Deputy Director, Mr. Odey Lawrence Waku stated that the importance of the programme was not lost on his Institution, pointing out that with the signing ceremony, efforts would be expeditious to ensure the smooth takeoff of the programme.
