The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged that more startling revelations on alleged corruption and fund mismanagement under the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde are imminent.

The opposition party spoke amid the controversy surrounding the alleged N50bn said to have been released to the state by the Federal Government to cushion the effects of the January 2024 explosion that ravaged parts of Bodija Estate, Ibadan.

The allegation followed claims by a former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, that the Federal Government released N50bn to Makinde as intervention funds after the explosion.

While the state government has issued official statements and granted media interviews to explain its position, analysts and political observers have faulted the governor for what they described as a failure to promptly disclose details of the alleged intervention.

In a statement issued at the weekend and made available to journalists in Ibadan, the APC, through its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, accused the Makinde-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government of insensitivity and lack of transparency.

The party said, “Governor Makinde lives in a glass house from where he throws stones at the neighbourhood while constantly seeking to demonise the government at the centre as a result of his penchant for self-aggrandisement and dirty politicking.

“There is no denying the fact that the N50bn Ibadan explosion relief fund saga has cleared all doubts about the current PDP government in Oyo State being a cesspool of corruption that thrives on false narratives and propaganda. This is a clear case of fund mismanagement and insensitivity to the plight of the victims of the explosion and their community.”

The APC also accused the governor of attempting to cast the Federal Government in a bad light instead of appreciating President Bola Tinubu for responding to the emergency.

“Another sad dimension is the attempt by Governor Makinde to demonise the Tinubu administration rather than appreciate the President for responding to the emergency by providing a whopping sum of money to ameliorate the pains of the victims,” the statement read.

The party recalled that Makinde had, in 2020, accused the administration of the late President Muhammadu Buhari of distributing contaminated rice as COVID-19 palliatives in the state.

According to the APC, the governor has also failed to acknowledge what it described as benefits accruing to the state from the Tinubu administration, including increased monthly allocations, donations of CNG buses, vehicles, and tricycles, as well as periodic palliatives.

“So far, the best response from Governor Makinde has been his open condemnation of the removal of fuel subsidy, while he has also been the loudest voice against the implementation of the Supreme Court judgment granting full financial autonomy to local government councils,” the party alleged.

The APC further accused the governor of selling landed properties belonging to the Federal Government and showing “disdain” for key institutions such as the judiciary.

It also recalled a legal action instituted by Makinde against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in 2019 over the controversial exercise book contract, noting that the case was still pending.

However, the party claimed that some allies of the governor were now willing to expose alleged improprieties within the administration.

“We have it on good authority that some allies of Governor Makinde are now being troubled by their conscience and can no longer conceal the dirty secrets of the PDP government in the state.

“They have started talking to the appropriate authorities, and by the time their revelations are made public, Governor Makinde and his co-travellers will have nowhere to hide,” the APC added.

The lawmaker representing Ido/Ibarapa East Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Aderemi Oseni, on Sunday declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) dead in Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State, following the defection of more than 1,500 of its members to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Oseni, who is the Chairman, House Committee on the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), made the declaration during a colourful reception organised by the Remi Oseni Committee of Friends (ROCOF) to welcome the defectors from all ten wards of the council area into the APC family.

The event, held at his constituency office in Ologuneru, Ibadan, drew a large crowd of party faithful, and community leaders who lauded the lawmaker’s inclusive leadership and grassroots political mobilisation.

 

Prominent among the defectors were Alhaji Bolaji Nureni Adeoye, Alhaji Akande, Alhaji Rasaki Elewedu, Alhaji Kasali Akande, Alhaji Dauda Afolabi, Hon. Wasiu Ijaoye, Adekola Kasumu, Nureni Adeyeri, Hon. Busari Kolawole, Elder Ogunleye, and Alhaji Lateef Lawal, among others.

In his remarks, Oseni described the defection as the “political burial” of the PDP in Ido Local Government.

“We are doing PDP burial in Ido today,” he said. “Today is Sunday, a holy day. It means God is pleased with what we are doing here.”

 

The federal lawmaker noted that the Remi Oseni Committee of Friends (ROCOF) had become a strong political force within the APC, driving grassroots mobilisation not only in Ibarapa East/Ido Federal Constituency, but across Oyo state.

“ROCOF is a moving train in Nigeria’s political history,” the APC chieftain stated. “It is unstoppable. Our mission is clear — come 2027, the APC will reclaim Oyo State and ensure the reelection of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

Oseni also attributed the rising strength of the APC in his constituency to both the people-oriented policies of the Tinubu-led administration and his own legislative interventions at the grassroots.

“The APC-led Federal Government under President Tinubu has done creditably well. We, as representatives of the people, are complementing those efforts at our level,” he said.

 

He assured the new entrants of full integration and equal opportunities within the APC structure, noting that they were not strangers in the party and would, in due course, be formally handed over to the party leadership.

“Today, I welcome over 1,500 PDP members to the APC through ROCOF. You are not strangers here; you are home,” Oseni added.

Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Alhaji Bolaji Adeoye said the decision to leave the PDP was inspired by the lawmaker’s credible leadership and result-driven representation.

“We are not decampees, we are returnees. We have always been with Hon. Remi Oseni. He is a record breaker and a true representative of the people,” Adeoye said. “I don’t want to remember PDP in my life again.”

Other leaders at the event pledged to mobilise more supporters into the APC ahead of the 2027 elections, describing Oseni as a promise keeper who had redefined representation with tangible results.

Earlier, Alhaji Hakeem Okedina, Senior Legislative Aide to the lawmaker, praised the courage and unity of purpose of the defectors, noting that their decision to align with the APC reflected the ongoing political realignment sweeping through Oyo State.

The lawmaker representing Ibarapa East/Ido Federal Constituency and Chairman of the House Committee on Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Hon. Aderemi Oseni, has described the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi as a statesman who redefined governance in Oyo State through courage, vision, and transformative leadership.

Oseni, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), made this known in a tribute issued by his media aide, Idowu Ayodele, on Wednesday to mark the fifth anniversary of Ajimobi’s passing. The statement was made available to journalists in Ibadan.

The Oyo State Fire Services Agency confirmed the incident in a statement, revealing that the victims were the tanker driver and his motor boy, both of whom were burnt to death in the inferno.

According to the agency’s General Manager, Yemi Akinyinka, the fire service received a distress call about the fire at 5:15 am and swiftly mobilised its personnel to the scene.

“We got information about the GABSTAB Mega Petrol Station, Orita Challenge, fire incident at 5:15 am and deployed our men immediately,” Akinyinka stated.

“The driver and motor boy were burnt to death.”

Preliminary investigations indicated that the tanker driver lost control of the vehicle due to brake failure, which led to the tanker spilling its highly flammable content, igniting the fire.

Akinyinka noted that prompt intervention by the Oyo State Fire Service, alongside private fire service operators, prevented the fire from spreading further into the residential area, averting a larger catastrophe.

Despite the firefighters’ efforts, the driver and his assistant were unable to escape and succumbed to the raging flames. Their remains were later handed over to officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) at the scene.

Akinyinka assured residents that the situation had been brought under control and stated that further details regarding the incident would be provided as investigations continue.

Eyewitness Accounts and Reactions

Residents and eyewitnesses described the scene as horrific, with flames engulfing the station and thick black smoke billowing into the sky.

One witness, who preferred to remain anonymous, said, “The fire was intense. We heard a loud explosion, and before we knew it, the tanker was already in flames. It’s so sad that the driver and his assistant couldn’t escape.”

Meanwhile, authorities have urged motorists, particularly tanker drivers, to ensure proper maintenance of their vehicles to prevent such tragic accidents in the future.

The Oyo State Fire Service has reiterated the need for strict safety measures at fuel stations and along major roads, emphasising the dangers of fuel-related mishaps.

The Ibadan Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has achieved a significant milestone with the conviction and sentencing of 25 individuals involved in internet fraud.

The verdicts were delivered by seven different judges across Federal and State High Courts in Ibadan, Oyo State, and Osogbo, Osun State.

According to a statement by Dele Oyewale, Head of Media & Publicity for the EFCC, the convicted individuals include Tomiwa Olumide Ayodele, Adeniyi Kehinde Nuhu, Adeniyi Warris Adegbola, Toyeeb Abayomi Ijadunola, Isiah Akinyele Kehinde, Oluwadunsin Johnson Alabi, Muis Lawal Gbolahan, Adeyinka Kola Adeleye, Sodiq Iyanu Babatunde, Ojo Blessing Adeniyi, Akinrinwoye Victor Olamide, Olaloye Olanrewaju Kinsley, Daniel Olashile Maiye, Omolade Opeyemi Oluwaseyi, Olamide Adekunle Adeoye, Kazeem Makinde Olawale, Malik Olamilekan Ayoade, Emmanuel Ayomide Ojubanire, Dada Bamidele John, Henry Ogochukwu Ikeh, Faruq Omoleye Adeola, Oluyole Ayobami Emmanuel, Ayodele Micheal Damilola, Adaramoye Abayomi, and Yussuf Quadri Abiodun.

They faced charges ranging from impersonation to possession of fraudulent documents, and obtaining money under false pretenses. All the defendants pleaded guilty to their charges, leading to their conviction.

Justice M. Salisu of the Osun State High Court in Osogbo sentenced Ayodele, Nuhu, Adegbola, and Ijadunola to one-year imprisonment each or a fine of N1 million each. Notably, Nuhu forfeited a Toyota Camry car and was ordered to restitute N415,000 to his victim, while Ijadunola forfeited a Toyota Camry and was ordered to restitute N2.5 million.

In separate rulings, Justice Ladiran Akintola of the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan sentenced Gbolahan, Adeleye, and Babatunde to three months of community service each or a fine of N30,000 each. Justice Nathaniel Ayo-Emmanuel of the Osun State High Court in Osogbo handed down six-month jail terms to Adeniyi, Olamide, and Kinsley, with fines ranging from N300,000 to N500,000.

Additionally, Justice E.U. Akpan of the Federal High Court in Ibadan sentenced Emmanuel and Damilola to one-year imprisonment each or a fine of N150,000 each. The convicted individuals forfeited all seized items to the federal government following their arrests in coordinated operations across Akure, Ondo State, and Ede, Osun State.
