SEQUEL to the recent declaration of Engr. Seyi Makinde as the Oyo state governor -elect, the state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Adeniyi Olowofela has observed the need for the incoming government to sustain the School Governing Boards (SGBs) policy for the sustainable development of education in the state.

The Commissioner who made this observation on Wednesday at the commissioning of an ultra – modern science laboratory; a project donated by Prof. Kolawole Adebayo to Oke’badan High School noted that the importance of the provision of adequate facilities in schools cannot be over -emphasized, stressing that the donation of this ultra modern science laboratory will go a long way in adding values, in enhancing the quality of teaching, learning as well as serving as an opening to improving the school in all ramifications.

According to Prof. Olowofela, qualitative education through the provision of the required and adequate teaching and learning facilities has been a great concern to the Abiola Ajimobi led administration, thus, the government lent out her hands of partnership through the School Governing Boards policy (SGBs) by inviting stakeholders comprising of the Parents Forum, the Old Students, Philanthropists among others to contribute their quotas to the development of education sector in the state.

He emphasised further that the state government has been advocating that the responsibility of education lies on all and sundry and “all of us must give back to the system that has produced us”.

“The SGBs policy is a magic wand in the sense that there is really no week in which we have not been invited to come and commission one project or the other for the government.

“Also, the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria, (DAWN) Commission has adopted School Governing Boards (SGBs) educational policy by Oyo state government towards enhancing educational development in the South West region.

“In fact, if we sustain this policy, I know that in the next 5 years, the public schools in the state would have changed remarkably. Why we are emphasising this is that our own government is on its way out, but this is a policy that must be sustained so that Oyo state can enjoy rapid infrastructural development and contents delivery in our schools”, Olowofela declared.

While appreciating donors’ previous contributions toward the development of education in the state, the Commissioner specifically lauded Prof. Adebayo for the rare disposition displayed by him in donating “this ultra -modern science laboratory for the use of the current students of the school and for the use of generation of students who are yet unborn “.

He, however implored the teachers to put the facility to optimal use for the benefits of the young ones and ensure that it is well kept and properly maintained.

Also speaking at the event, the donor, Professor Kolawole Adebayo while giving reason for his decision narrated: ” Today, we are giving facilities that you (students) are going to use with the expectation that in future you would also come back and give back to the school.

“My motivation is simple. The only reason I changed to Oke’ Badan High School was that I wanted to study science and at that time the laboratory was not ready in my former school. So, I discussed with my parent that I can’t be a science student if my school does not have a laboratory. My school was in Ijebu and wanted to come to Ibadan because I wanted to study science and I was brought here as a pupil in 1981.

” I was sad therefore, when 3 years ago we had our meeting at Justice Shoremi’s house in Abeokuta and I was told that the laboratory is not functioning. I was sad because that was the reason I came to Ibadan. Then, I have to contribute my widow’s mite.

Appreciating the old students association of the school, Prof. Adebayo also tasked others to contribute their own quota to the development of their alma mater.

Having realized that no government can shoulder the responsibilities of education alone, Governor Abiola Ajimobi had earlier inaugurated the School Governing Boards, (SGBs) in all the 628 Public Secondary Schools in Oyo state.

Interestingly, the Board aims at restoring, transforming and repositioning the education sector has enjoyed the commitment and cooperation of Principals, teachers, old students, parents, philanthropists among others.

THE Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Adeniyi Olowofela has lamented low credit given to the NPower and homegrown school feeding programs by the administration of President Mohammadu Buhari as the best at alleviating poverty and increasing standard of living.

The Commissioner who also the All Progressives Congress (APC) Aspirant for 2019 House of Representatives election in Ido/Ibarapa East Federal Constituency penultimate week during a ward tour in the constituency maintained that the two programs by President Buhari has helped masses in no small measure.

https://iso.keq.mybluehost.me/buhari-reacts-to-mass-defection-of-reps-members-senators/

According to him, Homegrown School Feeding has improved on agricultural value chain and provide delicious and nutritious meals that can boost brain’s better functioning to primary school pupils and N-Power which has also engaged youths in the country and distract them from their illicit lifestyle.

The Commissioner who also a University Don said: “Education in Oyo State is improving more than before with the effort of the Federal Government that complement the state government’s effort. The government of President Buhari’s target are poor Nigerians to make them more comfortable while those fighting him are selfish rich Nigerians.

“I will tell you two projects by President Buhari to prove his good wish for the poor. Number one is homegrown school feeding program which feeds pupils from Primary 1- 3 with free nutritious meals in school everyday. And most interesting thing is that the gesture is not for a section of pupils. All pupils can benefit from the program irrespective of political affiliation. Meaning that, whether you’re a child of APC, PDP, Accord or other political party, you can eat from the meals.

“Also the N-Power, the beneficiaries are not limited to APC but to everybody irrespective of political or social affiliation. And definitely, the creator of these children that benefits from Homegrown feeding program and youths from N-Power will enable President Buhari to be re-elected and also the N-Power beneficiaries will not pray he loses his re-election bid”, the Commissioner stated.

Professor Olowofela also during the ward tour urged the APC party members to reconcile with their aggrieved members.

“Recently some aggrieved members of APC raised eyebrows and some eventually left the political party. Some are aggrieved and left but have not gone far, let’s call them back to our fold, please let’s do because we belong to the same political family. But for those that won’t listen, we can leave them; because some people are meant to cause chaos, therefore let’s allow them to go.

“Considering the political parties they are joining, etymologically, joining in this context means they are political mistletoes. Because mistletoes don’t have root but live on other plants to survive. And when a farmer wants to remove unwanted plants, it is the mistletoes he cuts to allow real plants to to grow well.

https://iso.keq.mybluehost.me/fayose-reacts-to-mass-defection-of-senators-reps/

“Similarly, when these host political parties want to remove the unwanted members, the decamped or joined members will first be removed. Therefore, let’s call the aggrieved members back and let them realize that there are still rooms for them in the party so that they won’t suffer the imminent consequences of joining those political parties”, he appealed.

Olowofela noted that APC is the most established political party with ruling President, Governors, Council Chairmen and Councillors with robust party members saying, leaving APC to join the briefcase political parties is a negative decision.

He added that the State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi has some opportunities to offer party members in the state but still tarry for the return of the repentant among aggrieved members to partake in the benefits.

The Academician cum politician maintained that the Governor is a good party leader whose character modelled after what Jesus said in the bible that: ‘Shepard that lost one out of his 100 sheep, will leave the 99 sheep and go out to find the missing one because if he doesn’t do that, it will be a prey to a fox’.

OYO State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Adeniyi Olowofela on Wednesday decried the inadequate manpower in Solid Earth Geophysics in the Nigerian university system.

Olowofela, who is also a Professor of Solid Earth Geophysics noted that the nation had 158 universities, with population of geophysicists less than 2000; attributing the development to high cost of setting up geophysics research laboratories.

The University Don, however called on the Nigerian government and stakeholders in the education sector to urgently address the present challenge in order to exploit the financial prosperity nested in Geophysics

Delivering the 56th inaugural lecture of FUNAAB titled: ‘the use of innocuous geo (physical) tools in discerning the bowel of the earth as strategy for manpower development’, the commissioner revealed the uses of geophysics in developing manpower, enhancing safety against underground dangerous materials and economic development.

“As of 2018, the total number of universities in Nigeria is 158 with less than 2,000 Geophysicists in these institutions. For a population of over 170 million people, the intellectual ‘warehouse’ of this subject is abysmally low.

“If we can be creative and ingenious in our approach, as demonstrated in this lecture, we shall be able to produce quality and adequate manpower (in Solid Earth Geophysics) in the country and open ways to financial prosperity”, Olowofela assured.

Speaking on the role of geophysics to tackle underground dangerous materials, he observed that there are countries like Rwanda who after fighting wars, landmines are buried principally to destroy enemies but after the war, some of the mines are still active and can kill innocent people who step on it and explode.

The erudite scholar said to avert this danger, there is need for Thermography equipment which essentially detect buried objects from the surface . He explained further that drones with Thermographic equipments can be used to comb out dangerous materials from underground by the experts, adding that the military needs geophysical solutions to combat Bokoharam, and they can be taught thermographic methods to determine landmines.

Olowofela expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kolawole Salako, the Dean, College of Physical Sciences (COLPHYS) and the university community for the privilege given to him to deliver the institution’s 56th inaugural lecture.

In his address, Salako, had earlier described Olowofela as a Solid Earth Geophysicist per excellence.

Dignitaries that graced the event include: the Oyo state governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi who was represented by his Deputy, Otunba Moses Alake Adeyemo, cabinet members, heads of tertiary institutions, notable scholars, politicians, traditional rulers among others

The group comprises of youths, elders and women from various communities in the area also openly declared their total support for the commissioner’s House of Representatives ambition, describing him as a tested and trusted leader with all necessary requisites to occupy the seat as member representing Ido/Ibarapa East Federal constituency at the National Assembly.

While calling on all to queue behind the House of Representatives hopeful, Chief Samina Aderoju Atofiojomo who spoke on behalf of the group further averred that it was the turn of Ido Local Government to produce the House member to represent the federal constituency.

Also, some executives of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC across the ten wards of Ibarapa East Local Government who converged in Eruwa noted that the political turn-taking between the two councils irrespective of any political affiliation as a tradition has the capacity for maintaining peaceful political order.

“At the heart of tradition, the principles of trust, respect for fairness, equity, and justice as well as ensuring balancing of power are critical points that must not be overlooked. Our council has spent twelve (12) years on this seat; we need to observe the zoning arrangement”.

Thanking the executives and other stakeholders for the confidence reposed in him, the former council boss, Olowofela explained that he came to “consult and seek their supports” on his ambition.

THE Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Adeniyi Olowofela has emerged as one of the fifty most inspiring personalities in Nigeria according to The Guardian Newspaper.

Concerned about the get-rich-quick mentality of the youths of today, the organizer described the ex- council boss, Olowofela and others picked from various field of endeavours as inspirational persons whose stories and life trajectories can serve to motivate the youths to think positively , and galvanize them to dream and pursue goals in order to achieve, rather than just wasting away their potentials by engaging in criminal activities.

According to The Guardian Newspaper in a letter written to the Commissioner, dated January 31, 2018 titled “NIGERIA’S 50 MOST INSPIRING PERSONALITIES -SPECIAL REPORT’ and obtained by Mega Icon Magazine, said: “We write to intimate you that you have been picked as one of the 50 to be spotlighted in this momentum report which will be the first of its kind by any newspaper”.

While lamenting the alarming rate of criminal activities that have been giving Nigeria and Nigerians the wrong names everywhere as a result of the mindset of the youths, the management of the national daily, however described this as worrisome and repulsive, saying ” they need to be re-oriented “.

” Today in Nigeria, there is no hiding the fact that the youths are not interested in hard work or ready to struggle to achieve. All they want is money and they want it by hook or crook. They want to ride big cars, use luxury items, live in big houses and live comfortable lives without lifting a finger. This definitely is a complete antithesis to yesteryears when the youths then set their sights at certain goals in life and struggle through thick and thin to actualize these set goals. Then, it was usual for youths to work their way to the top in their various organizations and career.

“This is why The Guardian has come up with this initiative which is meant to make them see that there is virtue and valour in hard work by showcasing people who through hard work, resilience and can -do spirit got to great heights in this country”, the management informed.

Before nomination of the award, the Professor of geophysics, Olowofela who graduated from the University of Ibadan, (UI) has trained over 25,000 students, supervised over 50 B.Sc projects and more than 15 Ph.D projects, among whom have become Professors and Associate Professors. In the course of his academic career, he has more than 70 publications to his credit, two of them are being used by University students in Germany till today.

Also, he served different parties and governments in various capacities which include: National Delegate for National Republican Convention (NRC) in 1990; Member, Governing Council, Oyo State College of Education, Oyo between 2000 and 2003.

Similarly, he has served as Party Chairman, Alliance for Democracy (AD), Ido Local Government, Oyo State between 2002 and 2003 and as Chairmanship Aspirant, All Nigerian People’s Party, (ANPP) where he won the controversial election conducted by the then Oyo State Governor, Senator Rashidi Ladoja in 2007.

Thereafter, he was appointed by Governor Abiola Ajimobi as Transition Committee Chairman, Ido Local Government from 2011 to December, 2014 and Commissioner for Education Science and Technology from June 2016 till date.

The Commissioner had received several awards and honours; both locally and national, which include: overall Best Performed Local Government Chairman in Nigeria, 2012 at the 19th Edition of National Award for Excellence in Grassroots Leadership, Presented by Grassroots Leadership Centre, Abuja.

Also, as overall Best Performed Local Government Chairman in Nigeria, 2012 on Works/Education at the 10th Edition of the All Nigerian Local Government Chairmen Merit Award (LOGMA 2012) by Mentors Communication, Abuja; Oodua Hero Council Chairman, 2013, an award presented by the Yoruba Youth Development Council, (YYDC).

The Professor also bagged ‘Oyo State Commissioner of the year award’, at the 2017 Miss Oyo State Beauty Pageant, presented by Silverstone Communications and Prestigious Award of Ambassador of Ethics and Conscience with Induction into Hall of Fame, 2018 by Centre for Ethics and Self Value Orientation.

Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Adeniyi Olowofela has said that the state government under Governor Abiola Ajimobi has spent N67,464, 000.00 on school feeding programme for pupils in the hostel of Government Special Schools in twelve months.

He said this on Wednesday during his keynote address at the 8th Edition of Music, Dance and Play Festival for persons with disabilities held at the National Museum of Unity, Alesinloye, Ibadan.

He noted that the present administration has demonstrated commitment to the education of all, stressing that the government is supporting education in all ramifications.

Olowofela also emphasized that the ultimate priority of the government of the day is the awareness on preventive methods and reduction in the occurrence of disabilities in the society and implementation of educational and vocational programmes for management of people with disabilities.

“Oyo State Government under the leadership of Senator Abiola Ajimobi had been concerned with the welfare of persons with disabilities. Recently, we distributed teaching/instructional materials to special schools in the state and created a conducive environment for teaching and learning.

“The government also provides free lodging and feeding for all pupils in the hostel of Government Special Schools, while the salaries of the domestic workers are also paid”, he said.

The commissioner further provides details of N5,622,000.00 disbursed to Special Schools for feeding on monthly basis.

A breakdown of the release revealed that the School for the Deaf, Ijokodo received the largest allocation of N1,500,000.00.This was followed by School for the Handicapped, Saki which got N897,000.00 ; while School for the Blind, Ogbomoso got N501,000.00.

The Oluyole Cheshire Home received N450,000.00 and School for the Handicapped, Durbar, Oyo with N450,000.00.

Others are: School for the Deaf, Eruwa (N450,000.00), Home School for the Handicapped, Ijokodo (N450, 000.00), Lagelu Special School, Lalupon (N333,000.00), Omoyeni School for the Blind, Ademola, Ibadan (N315,000.00), School for the Handicapped H. L. A, Agodi (N240,000.00) and Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria, FOMWAN (N36,000.00).

The commissioner, however called on well-meaning Nigerians, Organizations, public spirited individuals to partner with the government towards making life easier for people with disabilities by providing basic educational needs, medical needs and human assistance.

“Today, there is need of protecting people with disabilities because ability to do this determines the ability of a country’s greatness. I therefore appeal to well-meaning Nigerians to support people with disabilities with moral and financial assistance”.

Also speaking, the former Special Adviser to the governor on disability, Prince Paul Adelabu commended the state government for taking issues of the students living with disabilities seriously.

Speaking on need to support the people living with disabilities, Adelabu said: “there is need to support these children with disabilities. They have residual ability and it causes efforts to dig it out through education.

“They are just like me but are loaded with internal abilities. If it is in a developed countries, they are paid without labour and I believe we are getting there. And I’m happy that they have been given adequate attention under the present administration”,

Describing how difficult life is to the people with disabilities including him, Adelabu added: “during my birth, people and my parents sobered because I was disabled. Even they attempted to kill me because of my disability but today, I’m a source of joy to all and sundry”.
