Former Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Inland Waterways Authority, Bola Oyebamiji, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the August 8, 2026 election in Osun State.

Oyebamiji, popularly known as AMBO, was on Saturday affirmed as the sole candidate of the opposition party at the APC governorship primary held at the Imperial Hall of Ebunoluwa International School, Osogbo.

Chairman of the APC Primary Election Committee and Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, said a total of 1,660 delegates drawn from the 332 wards across the state participated in the exercise, with five delegates representing each ward.

One of the disqualified aspirants, Kunle Adegoke (SAN), speaking on behalf of other aspirants, moved a motion for Oyebamiji to be adopted as the consensus candidate of the party.

The motion was seconded by a former senator and gubernatorial aspirant, Babajide Omoworare, after which the delegates, through a voice vote, unanimously affirmed Oyebamiji’s candidacy.

Following the affirmation, Okpebholo declared Oyebamiji the sole candidate of the APC for the 2026 governorship election in the state.

In his acceptance speech, Oyebamiji thanked the party leadership, aspirants, delegates, and members of the primary election committee for the confidence reposed in him, pledging to lead the party to victory at the polls.

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission were present to monitor the primary.

Addressing delegates after the exercise, Okpebholo expressed confidence in the party’s chances, describing the election as a must-win contest for the APC in Osun State.

“We are tired of dancing. We are going to win. I have never lost any election. This is a must-win election for us in Osun. This is the man who will bring development to your state,” he said.

The Omoluabi Progressives, a political faction led by former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, has formally announced its departure from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing internal party crises, ostracisation, and expulsions of its leaders without fair hearing.

The group’s decision, announced in a statement by its Organising and Publicity Secretary, Oluwaseun Abosede, followed a consensus reached during its monthly meeting in Ilesa on Sunday.

Members from all 332 wards in Osun State participated in a voice vote affirming their readiness to align with a new political structure ahead of the 2026 governorship election.

Abosede’s statement noted the group’s dissatisfaction with the APC’s handling of intra-party conflicts, which she said contributed to the party’s poor performance in the last election cycle.

In his remarks, former Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola praised the group’s unity and commitment to its principles of integrity and good governance.

“I am indeed happy that all of you have spoken with one voice… to further raise the level of prosperity of our dear state through responsible leadership,” Aregbesola said. “We are open to all, regardless of political, religious, or socio-cultural leanings. By the grace of God, we shall succeed.”

Aregbesola assured members that efforts to reposition the group for future political engagements were already underway, with results expected soon.

APC Reacts: “Good Riddance to Bad Rubbish”

In response, the Osun State chapter of the APC dismissed the exit as inconsequential, labeling the Omoluabi Progressives a faction of “political gangbangers.”

Chief Kola Olabisi, the APC spokesperson in the state, stated, “In fact, the preposterous announcement of the so-called Omoluabi Progressives to quit the APC is a good riddance to bad rubbish.”

He described the group as a collection of “political vagabonds” and “agents of the PDP in Osun State,” who, according to him, had already detached themselves from the APC since 2022.

“How would any rational human being who has been suspended or expelled announce his resignation to the whole world again? Is that not an example of superfluity?” Olabisi asked rhetorically.

He added that the APC remains stronger and more unified without the dissidents and predicted that the move would mark the “political funeral” of the Omoluabi Progressives in the 2026 governorship election.

Olabisi concluded by asserting that the APC would continue to grow and overcome what he termed “antics of political renegades,” urging party faithful to disregard the developments.

Political analysts and Nigerians are keenly interested in the fate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Southwest Nigeria leading up to the 2027 general elections. The party has established a strong presence in states like Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, and Ekiti, sparking speculation about its ability to maintain supremacy.

Election outcomes often hinge on the advantage of incumbents. If the current APC-appointed governors in Southwest Nigeria continue their commendable efforts and fulfill commitments, they stand a good chance of garnering electoral support. Sustaining party control necessitates building on achievements, addressing public demands, and implementing impactful policies. The electorate’s confidence and votes will be closely tied to the governance record and visible development.

The APC’s future success hinges significantly on internal dynamics and unity. A cohesive party can efficiently plan and mobilize resources for election campaigns, presenting a strong front. To enhance its chances in the 2027 elections, the APC must effectively manage internal conflicts, champion diversity, and consider various interests, making it more appealing to voters.

For opposition parties aiming to challenge APC’s dominance in Southwest Nigeria, effective tactics and strength are paramount. A credible candidate lineup and compelling perspectives are essential for conveying alternative agendas to the electorate. A cohesive, well-organized opposition forming strategic partnerships poses a potential threat to the ruling party. The success of opposition parties will depend on exploiting APC weaknesses and resonating with public aspirations.

Politics in Southwest Nigeria ahead of the 2027 General Elections may be shaped by socioeconomic issues and public opinion. The electorate must evaluate how well the APC addresses concerns like infrastructure development, unemployment, healthcare, and education. Public opinion will be influenced by the party’s inclusivity in policymaking and responsiveness to the populace’s needs and aspirations. Socioeconomic variables, including changes in population, inter-ethnic relationships, and regional attitudes, could affect voting patterns.

Speculation surrounds the potential defections of Sen. Ademola Adeleke and Engr. Seyi Makinde of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun and Oyo states, respectively, to the APC before the next election cycle. Their performance as governors will play a pivotal role in this decision, considering whether they can leverage the APC as a platform to consolidate accomplishments and gain more political influence.

Possible motivations for defection include a desire to align with the national ruling party, obtaining resources, political clout, and collaboration with the federal government. Personal goals within their states, such as re-election or aspiring to higher political offices, may also influence their decisions.

The PDP would face significant setbacks if the governors in Osun and Oyo states defect, weakening the party’s position in these states and complicating resistance against the APC. The loss of experienced leadership could further impact the party’s cohesiveness and strength.

Potential defections may enhance the APC’s reach and election prospects, showcasing its ability to attract well-known politicians from rival parties. Voter responses in Osun and Oyo will vary, with some viewing defections as self-serving and opportunistic, while others may see them as strategic moves for progress.

The fluidity of Nigerian politics is underscored by the possibility of PDP governors defecting to the APC before the 2027 elections. Political calculations, personal goals, and government performance will shape their decisions, significantly impacting both parties and the political landscape in their respective states. Voter sentiments will play a crucial role in determining the ultimate impact on the 2027 election results.

In summary, Southwest Nigeria’s general elections in 2027 present an opportunity for the APC to either maintain or erode its lead in the region. Success requires leveraging incumbency advantage, internal harmony, proactive handling of socioeconomic issues, adept management of opposition dynamics, and effective engagement with the electorate. The electoral outcome will also be influenced by the strategies and strength of opposing parties, public opinion, and socioeconomic factors.

Oyetola said this in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Ismail Omipidan, on Sunday in Osogbo.

He said the All Progressives Congress (APC) had taken cognisance of the results of the governorship election as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday.

The governor, however, noted that the party would be responding appropriately after studying the results and consulting with critical stakeholders of the party.

Oyetola called on his supporters to remain calm, and the people of the state to go about their businesses without let or hindrance.

The governor also called on security operatives to ensure maintenance of law and order.

Oyetola also directed security operatives to take adequate charge so as to prevent breakdown of law and order.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Sunday morning declared Adeleke as the winner of the Saturday’s governorship election in the state.

Announcing the results at the INEC Collation Centre, Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, who was the Returning Officer, said that Adeleke polled 403,371 votes to defeat his closet rival, Gov. Gboyega Oyetola, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who scored 375,027 votes.

NAN reports that the PDP won in 17 local government areas, while APC won in 13.

The 13 local government areas won by APC are; Ilesa East, Ayedaade, Boripe, Ifedayo, Ife Central, Boripe, Ola-Oluwa, Iwo, Isokan, Irewole, Atakumosa East and Ife East.

Senator Ademola Adeleke, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has revealed that he returned to school when there were controversies surrounding his educational qualifications.

Adeleke’s educational qualifications, especially his Senior Secondary School Certificate, has been a major campaign weapon for his political opponents, who say that the lawmaker did not attend secondary school.

Recall that the Senator representing Osun Central Senatorial District, Ajibola Basiru, in a recent interview said that Adeleke deliberately left blank the part he was supposed to fill in details of his secondary school certificate in the form CF01 submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Basiru, who is also the Senate spokesman, said he has copies of the forms from 2018 to the present one, claiming that Adeleke initially claimed he has secondary school certificate in 2018, but in the present one he filled, he deliberately omitted that part.

But speaking during the governorship debate hosted by Channels Television on Sunday, Adeleke said, “As soon as I become Governor of Osun State, I’ll declare a state of emergency on education.

“You know why? Because I went back to school when there were controversies surrounding my educational qualifications.

“I went back to school to be a role model for the young people, even the adults to prove that it’s never too late to be educated.

“I went back there very boldly and studied with people that should be my grandchildren. Today, I thank God that I’m more educated and ready to rule Osun State.”
