The Federal Government on Thursday asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to impose the death penalty on the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, following his conviction on seven counts of terrorism.

Justice James Omotosho, in a judgment delivered in Abuja, held that the prosecution had proved all the allegations in the seven charges beyond reasonable doubt, and consequently found Kanu guilty.

Moments after the conviction was announced, the Federal Government’s lead counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), urged the court to apply the maximum punishment under the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act, 2013.

Awomolo told the court that the law prescribes a mandatory death sentence for several of the offences for which Kanu had just been convicted.

He said, “My Lord, consequent upon the conviction, nothing further remains but the lawful imposition of sentence. The punishment prescribed for the offences in Counts One, Two, Four, Five and Six, pursuant to Section 12H of the Terrorism Prevention Amendment Act 2013, is death.

“With all sense of humility, I say as a prosecutor that this court has no discretion in that regard. The only sentence Your Lordship can impose for Counts One, Two, Four, Five and Six is death, because the law empowers you to do so, and we expect that you will.”

Following the submissions, Justice Omotosho stood down the proceedings and announced that the court would reconvene at 3:50 p.m.

The judge is expected to deliver the sentencing decision after considering arguments from both the prosecution and the defence.

The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Thursday, convicted the self-acclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, of terrorism against the Federal Government.

Delivering judgment, Justice James Omotosho held that the prosecution had proved the seven counts preferred against Kanu beyond reasonable doubt.

The judge ruled that the Federal Government established that Kanu’s actions and broadcasts constituted acts of terrorism under the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act.

IPOB, which Kanu leads, was proscribed and designated a terrorist organisation by the Federal Government in 2017 following a court order.

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has said no sit-at-home order tomorrow (Friday).

IPOB said the reported order issued by Nnamdi Kanu’s alleged disciple, Simon Ekpa should be ignored.

Emma Powerful, the spokesman of the group, accused Ekpa of trying to destroy IPOB.

A statement by Powerful accused Ekpa of working for the Nigerian Government to destroy the IPOB.

Powerful maintained that Ekpa was not a member of IPOB, hence should be disregarded by those sympathetic to the Biafran cause.

He described Ekpa as a scam.

According to Powerful: “The attention of the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has been drawn to the laughable, disgraceful and unguarded statements credited to certain “Refugees interpreter” based in Finland whose name is Simon Ekpa through whom Nigeria Government and enemies of Biafra had successfully launched so many tragedies and attacks against our land and people.

“We do, hereby, strongly reiterate once again that Simon Ekpa is not IPOB member, not IPOB or Biafra spokesman, not a family member of IPOB in any family unit in Finland and has never remitted a dime from his monthly fundraising to Eastern Security Network (ESN).

“Every activity of the Finland-based blogger and scammer, Simon Ekpa is to scam and deprive ignorant Biafrans who genuinely wanted to support the only genuine ESN under IPOB-DOS command of funds and logistics so that Igbo land would be invaded by Fulani invaders.

“We, therefore, advise Simon Ekpa and his miserable sponsors not to continue hiding under the name IPOB, ESN and commit all manner of crimes.

“IPOB did not order sit-at-home on Friday which is tomorrow 22nd July 2022, this would be reechoed tonight by IPOB leadership the Governing body. The Directorate Of State the DOS of The Indigenous People Of Biafra will speak to Night, please tune in to Radio Biafra tonight 21/07/2022 at 7:30 BT (Biafra Time).”

Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, promised to consider the request for the release of Nnamdi Kanu after meeting with a group of leaders from the South East under the aegis of Highly Respected Igbo Greats.

President Buhari made the pledge when he received the delegation led by a First Republic parliamentarian and former Minister of Aviation, Mbazulike Amaechi, at the State House in Abuja.

“You’ve made an extremely difficult demand on me as leader of this country,” the President was quoted as saying in a statement by his media adviser, Femi Adesina. “The implication of your request is very serious.

“In the last six years, since I became President, nobody would say I have confronted or interfered in the work of the Judiciary. God has spared you, and given you a clear head at this age, with very sharp memory. A lot of people half your age are confused already.”

An unconditional release of the leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) – Kanu, who is currently standing trial, according to the President, runs contrary to the doctrine of separation of powers between the Executive and Judiciary.

Stressing his policy of non-interference with the Judiciary, he said when Kanu jumped bail, got arrested and was brought back to the country, “I said the best thing was to subject him to the system.

“Let him make his case in court, instead of giving very negative impressions of the country from outside. I feel it’s even a favour to give him that opportunity.”

The President condoled with Amaechi who recently buried his wife and prayed that her soul would rest in peace.

Amaechi, in his remarks, had described the situation in the South East as “painful and pathetic,” lamenting that businesses have collapsed, education was crumbling, fear has begun to manifest everywhere.

He pleaded for a political, rather than military solution, requesting that if Kanu was released to him as the only First Republic Minister alive, “he (Kanu) would no longer say the things he had been saying.”

The former minister promised to control Kanu, “not because I have anything to do with them (IPOB), but I am highly respected in Igbo land today.”

He stated that he had interfaced with Nnamdi Kanu in the past twice, and the latter rescinded orders earlier given on civil disobedience.

“I don’t want to leave this planet without peace returning to my country. I believe in one big, united Nigeria, a force in Africa. Mr President, I want you to be remembered as a person who saw Nigeria burning, and you quenched the fire,” Amaechi told President Buhari.

Other people in the visiting delegation were former Anambra State Governor, Chukwuemeka Ezeife; Bishop Sunday Onuoha of the Methodist Church, former President of Igbo socio-cultural group, Aka Ikenga, Goddy Uwazurike; and Mr Tagbo Amaechi.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria and human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana on Thursday kicked against the breakup of Nigeria along ethnic lines.

It would be recalled that groups including the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) led by Nnamdi Kanu and the Yoruba Nation agitators have campaigned for both Biafra and Oduduwa Republics.

Falana, while featuring on Channels Television’s Politics Today, monitored by Mega Icon Magazine, noted that he has a fundamental disagreement with secessionist groups in the country.

His words, “personally, I am strenuously opposed to the campaign for the balkanisation of Nigeria because I believe the masses of our people are oppressed by the ruling class and imperialism.

“To that extent, I have a fundamental ideological disagreement with those who are calling for the breakup of the country along ethnic lines.”

He explained that amid the agitations in some quarters that the nation should split, the Nigerian government owes it a duty to convince the agitators by reposing confidence on the corporate existence of Nigeria.

Meanwhile, he stated that it is not a criminal offence for some persons to make separatists demands, the senior lawyer, however said the current administration should respect human rights in line with Article 20 of the African Charter on Human Rights.

“If a group of people decides to fight for the breakup of the country, the duty of the government is to try as much as possible to convince them to repose confidence in the corporate existence of Nigeria”, Falana submitted.

The two major separatists – Igboho and Kanu – have been arrested and are facing trial both in the Benin Republic and Nigeria respectively.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has reacted to the killing of one of its leaders, particularly the ESN unit COMMANDER, Ikonson Commander,

saying Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State “will pay dearly”.

The Nigerian Army had on Saturday disclosed that it led a combined team of security forces to raid “the operational Headquarters of the IPOB/ESN terrorists in Awomama Village, Oru East LGA of Imo State.

During the raid, Ikonso – who the Army alleged was the mastermind of the April 5 attacks on the Imo State Police Command and the Owerri Correctional Center, in addition to multiple attacks in the South East and South South regions – was neutralised along with six of his top Commanders.

However, the proscribed IPOB, in a statement signed by its spokesman , Emma Powerful on Saturday, said “the killing of the heroic innocent Biafrans protecting our communities and towns from Fulani terrorists herdsmen masquerading as cattle herders in cold blood is very painful.”

“The Supreme Court Administrator of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma and all those who had a hand in this wickedness will pay dearly.

“Hope Uzodinma and his cowardly Nigerian security agencies that cannot confront Fulani terrorists but only flex their muscles when they see Biafra agitators.

“For murdering Ikonso, the ESN unit COMMANDER in cold blood, Uzodima has stirred the hornet nest! He should get ready for a sting”, the statement added.

The Biafran separatist organization alleged that Governor Uzodima decided to kill Ikonso because he refused his offer to head “Ebubeagu ghost security outfit formed by South East governors”.

IPOB further alleged that the governor has tried but without success to lure ESN operatives into EBUBEAGU.

“He had made irresistible offers to them which were turned down, hence his resorting to elimination of these patriotic heroes who vowed never to betray Biafra.

“Hope Uzodinma sent a lot of emissaries to beg Ikonso and other ESN officers to join EBUBEAGU security outfit. So, because of their refusal to betray Biafra agitation and our Leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the hopeless governor mobilized joint security forces to attack them today.

“Contrary to claims by the cowardly security forces who flee from terrorists but kill innocent citizens, they were not able to peneterate into the camp of Eastern Security Network ESN. They only ambushed Ikonso but we promise them hell for this cowardly act!

“Hope Uzodima has murdered sleep, so he should be ready to stay awake! FULANI terrorists pretending as cattle sellers in Enugu destroyed Police van and attacked Government officials on lawful duty with AK-47 but no Army, police or DSS attacked them till now. But ESN operatives defending our communities against the terrorists are being hunted like games everyday. The world has kept quiet over this atrocity until we begin our own madness.

“Hope Uzodinma as you the body of Ikonso was paraded by Fulani Jihadists in police and Nigerian army, so shall it be your portion one day”, the statement concluded.

The Presidency has said that those demanding for the whereabouts of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu should direct their inquiries to those who signed Kanu’s bail in April.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu made the remark on Thursday.

According to Shehu, “I am surprised someone would ask this question. Look, some people went to court and obtained his freedom, they signed his bail.

“I believe that a high profile group including a Senator of the Federal Republic signed in a court of law and obtained his freedom. So, if you are looking for him, why don’t you ask the people who bailed him?

“Nobody has informed me that Mr Kanu is in the hands of any institution of government. But if I was looking for him, I would ask the guy who bailed him because that is the deal he has with the court of the land.”

Recall that counsel to the IPOB leader, Ifeanyi Ejiofor had alleged that Kanu had gone missing after his residence was raided by some soldiers on September 14.

Following a ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja granting Kanu bail on April 25, Senator representing Abia South Senatorial District, Enyinnaya Abaribe, had signed the bond, which helped secured the release of the IPOB leader.

President Muhammadu Buhari was said to have issued a matching order to the Nigerian military
to weaken Nnamdi Kanu and his group, the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) before he returns from the trip he is set to embark on Sunday.

Buhari will attend the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 72).

He will join other world leaders at the welcoming reception to be hosted by the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, and also hold a bilateral meeting with the UN scribe.

The Nigerian leader is billed to have a a lunch meeting with President Donald Trump of the United States of America, along with other world leaders.

Buhari, who will be accompanied by the governors of Zamfara, Ebonyi and Ondo States, and key cabinet ministers, will transit through London on his way back to the country.

Although it is still unclear how long the president will be away, DAILY POST gathered on Friday that he spoke to the nation’s security chiefs earlier in the week.

The president, angered by the audacity of IPOB in declaring that they were ready to fight Nigerians ordered the military to move in and quell their violent clamour.

”Buhari will never negotiate the unity of Nigeria and I can tell you that the declaration by the military that IPOB are enemies of the state is the outcome of the go-ahead by the president.”

“Rules of engagement will be respected but force will be applied where necessary. My advice is for the agitators to clam down and use wisdom,” a reliable source told DAILY POST.

The Nigerian military in a statement by Major General, John Enenche, Director Defence Information, declared IPOB a terrorist organisation.

A statement he signed gave reasons for the decision.

The military had said, “after due professional analysis and recent developments, it has become expedient, to notify the general public that; the claim by IPOB actors that the organization is non violent is not true.

“Hence, the need to bring to public awareness the true and current state of IPOB.
“In this regard, some of their actions, clandestinely and actively, that has been terrorising the general public among others include;

“The formation of a Biafra Secret Service; Claimed formation of Biafra National Guard; Unauthorised blocking of public access roads; Extortion of money from innocent civilians at illegal road blocks.

“Militant possession and use of weapons (stones, molotov cocktails, machetes and broken bottles among others) on a military patrol on 10 September 2017.

“Physical confrontation of troops by Nnamdi Kanu and other IPOB actors at a check point on 11 September 2017 and also attempts to snatch their rifles.

“Attack by IPOB members, on a military check point on 12 September 2017, at Isialangwa, where one IPOB actor attempted to snatch a female soldier’s rifle.”

The source told our correspondent that the onslaught against Kanu and IPOB will commence on Monday.

He said the military is fully ready and will clampdown on Biafra agitators in response “to the battle line drawn by Nnamdi Kanu”.

“If you go to the extent of forming a secret service all in the name of agitation, you have declared war on the state and no responsible government will just watch and do nothing”.

“So come Monday, those who think they have grown so much that they can threaten a whole country should be ready to face the consequences”.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s Personal Assistant on Social Media, Lauretta Onochie has said the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu is notorious and not popular.

Onochie made the remark while sharing a photograph of a man prostrating and kissing Kanu’s feet on her Twitter handle.

The Presidential aide, who described Kanu as a “Biafraud,” maintained that the IPOB leader is “evil.”

According to Onochie, Kanu was using people of the South East to “wipe the floor.”
