The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has tackled the Federal Government for tagging its five-day warning strike as illegal.

The strike commenced at 8 am on Wednesday, May 17, and would end Monday, May 22.

Its National President, Emeka Orji, while featuring on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday, challenged the Federal Government to point out the part of the law that makes the strike illegal.

“I believe that there is no law that says that a warning strike is illegal. If they say a warning strike is illegal, let them prove it to us. We want to see the part of the law that says that a warning strike is illegal”.

Orji said the association had satisfied all the provisions before embarking on a strike, adding that the National Executive Council (NEC) has given the association the mandate to proceed on a warning strike.

“If they resolve all these, we won’t come here and be talking about whether it is NMA or NARD or any other affiliate that should take up these points to the government. These issues are germane, and we want to appeal again that we are open to discussion.

“If they call us to discuss and address these issues, we believe many of them can be addressed in a matter of days and there won’t be a need for all these crises we are having in the health sector,” Orji stressed.

It would be recalled that on April 29, 2023, NARD issued a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government to commence the implementation of all pending agreements or the doctors will embark on a nationwide strike.

Among other demands, the resident doctors want an immediate increment in the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) salary structure to the tune of 200 percent of the current gross salary of doctors.

The government had described the demand of the doctors as ridiculous but the NARD president said the 25% increment offered by the government is not sufficient to cater to the needs of doctors in the country.

Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the release of a doctor and a nurse abducted on April 7.

The Force , through its Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi disclosed this on Tuesday.

Meanwhile , the Police could not confirm if the family members of the victims paid ransom to secure the release of the health workers who regained their freedom in the early hours of today.

The victims were identified as Oladunni Odetola and Mrs Bamgbose respectively.

Odetola, who is the head of General Hospital, Imeko, Imeko-Afon Local Government Area, alongside the nurse Bamgbose were kidnapped last week Wednesday on Abeokuta – Imeko road.

It was learnt that the gunmen had emerged from the bush at Olubo village and whisked away their victims.

Their abductors subsequently demanded ₦20m ransom, a development which allegedly led to fundraising among the health workers in the state in order to secure the release of their colleagues.

Also, the State Chairman of Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Ogunlaja Oladayo confirmed their release after about six days in captivity.

“Yes, they have been released early this morning,” he added.

Oladayo also declined comments when asked if ransoms were paid.

“I don’t have any information on that”, he responded.

The medical doctors and nurses in Ogun State had earlier announced the withdrawal of services in protest against the abduction of their colleagues.

The no-work protest takes effect from 12 midnight on Tuesday.

Contained in a letter jointly addressed to the Commissioner of Health, Dr Tomi Coker, the health workers accused the government of non-committal to securing the release of their abducted colleagues.

The letter titled “Notification of Withdrawal of Service” was dated April 12, and jointly signed by the State NMA Chairman, Oladayo Ogunlaja and the State Chairman of NANNM, Roseline Solarin.

They described the kidnapping of the health workers as “disheartening, repugnant and unacceptable,” stressing that the government’s approach of “not negotiating with the kidnappers have left us to believe our lives and security is of no essence to this government.”

The leadership, therefore, declared withdrawal of service by the doctors and nurses, from all public health institutions in the state, effective from 12 midnight on Tuesday.

“The strike will continue until the safety of our members is guaranteed,” the leadership stressed.

“In the light of the above, it glaring that the safety of the Health workers is no longer guaranteed.

“The joint committee of NMA and NANNM resolved as follows: Lives of our members which the government cannot guarantee is sacrosanct.

“The Government has not shown enough commitment to the safe release of our incarcerated members.

“Immediate withdrawal of the services of our members from all institutions until the safety of our members is guaranteed, effective from 12 midnight, 13th April 2021.

“We hope that the government will make the security of lives and properties a matter of priority and see to it immediately”, the letter reads.

Executive members of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) have disclosed that the body would hold its Southwest zonal games in Ibadan, Oyo State capital between the 5th and 8th of December 2019.

The Association disclosed this Monday while paying a courtesy visit to the State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatunbosun at his office, promising the State to use the medical game to explore tourists sites in the State.

The leader of the delegation, Dr. Akin Sopdipo said the Southwest zonal games would be used to select various zonal teams at the next NMA national games that would hold soon.

He sought the support of the State Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism towards maximizing the possibility of exploring the State tourism potentials.

“The Zonal Games would be the deciding exercise to select the most capable of the teams that would be qualified for the national games soon, but while we are here for the zonal games, we plan to explore tourism potentials in the State and we believe we can do that with ease through the support of the State Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism.

“We have heard of so many tourists sites in Ibadan and other parts of the State, like Ikere George Dam at Iseyin, Bower’s Tower at Ibadan among others, we can go to these places with ease and get the stories behind them through the support of the Ministry and that is why we are here.”

The Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatunbosun appreciated the association for picking Ibadan as the point for the zonal games, saying the city had history of pioneering many feats in the areas of sports, education and entertainment.

He informed his guests the the Ministry was ready to support NMA with coverage of their activities during their stay and while traversing tourist sites in the State with its online radio and other media platforms for the week-long activities

Olatunbosun therefore sought the support of the association towards planning a free medical service programme for staffers of the Ministry.
