JAMB, through its Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, attributed its decision to the inability of at least 600,000 candidates who have indicated interest to participate, to register for the examination earlier billed to hold between June 5 and 19.

Speaking at a virtual meeting with 2021 UTME committee members, Oloyede disclosed that 1.1 million candidates have so far registered for the 2021 UTME, and the board anticipated approximately 1.9 million registrations at the end of the exercise.

The JAMB boss noted that while 50 per cent of the candidates have already registered without problem, there was a need to carry everyone along.

He stated that at the end of the meeting with the stakeholders, they would decide on whether to shift the exam forward or not.

“The possibility of shifting the exam forward is still high, but that will be determined after our meeting with stakeholders,” he said.

“This is because about 600,000 candidates who have indicated interest in the exam are yet to register. There is a need to give everyone the opportunity”, he added.

JAMB had directed candidates to provide two pictures in the exam script – that of who register for the exam and of persons who register for the National Identification Number (NIN).

The NIN, which is a unique number that identifies individuals, is issued by the country’s National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) upon enrolment.

The JAMB registrar apologised for the new initiatives introduced in the 2021 UTME, noting that it was not to punish candidates but to expose candidates who engage in the habit of indulging in various forms of malpractices.

While calling on the candidates to take note of the process, Professor Oloyede clarified that the essence was to detect any disparity in the process.

He submitted, “We apologise for putting you through some hardship in the registration. The government directed that anyone participating in JAMB must have their NIN. This is beyond our control. Those who are yet to register should do so.

“The MOCK exam is bill to come up on Thursday. It is an exam meant to test out capability. As you all know, the main exam is coming up on June 5 and 19, 2021.

“We are meeting with stakeholders today to discuss the issues and on whether we will shift the exam date forward or not. We will brief the media on the outcome of the meeting tomorrow.

“Shifting the exam date is not the solution; at the meeting, we will discuss how some of the problems encountered by candidates would be resolved. It is important that we carry everyone along.”

Oloyede hinted that JAMB has secured about 802 exam centres across the country and 104 centres in towns.

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has ordered the extension of the deadline for National Identity Number, NIN by two months.

Justice Maureen Onyetenu granted the extension while delivering a ruling in a fundamental right suit filed by legal practitioner, Monday Ubani against the federal government, the Attorney General of the Federation, Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC and the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy.

In the suit, Ubani had contended that the initial two weeks ultimatum (now extended to April 6, 2021) given to telecommunication operators to block SIM Cards of Nigerians who have not registered their SIM Card with NIN if allowed, will infringe on his constitutionally guaranteed right to freedom of expression, right to own moveable property and right to life.

He therefore asked the court for an order halting the said ultimatum and extending the deadline.

The former NBA Ikeja Chairman also asked the court for; a declaration that the ultimatum given to telecommunications operators by the 1st, 3rd and 4th Respondents to block all Subscriber Identification Modules (SIM) cards that are not registered with NIN, is grossly inadequate and will not only work severe hardship, but will likely infringe on the fundamental rights of the Applicant (and millions of other Nigerians) to freedom of expression as guaranteed by section 39(1)(2) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as well as violate section 44(1) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) which prohibits the compulsory acquisition of right or interest over moveable property.

“A declaration that in view of the Covid-19 pandemic and the rising cases in Nigeria presently, the deadline given by the 1st, 3rd and 4th Respondents to the Applicant and over 200 million Nigerians to register their SIM Cards with NIN, will lead to a rush, thereby resulting to clustering of the Applicant and other Nigerian citizens in a NIN registration centre, subjecting him to the possibility of easily contracting the covid-19 virus, and such will amount to a violation of his fundamental right to life as protected by section 33(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

“An order halting the said ultimatum given by the 1st, 3rd and 4th Respondents to telecommunication operators to block all SIM Cards that are not registered with NIN.”

In his ruling, Justice Onyetenu granted all the reliefs sought by Ubani.

JAMB, in a series of tweets urged Prospective candidates to visit the nearest @nimc_ng office for their capturing.

“The Examination Board would ONLY register candidates with NIN.

“All payments on JAMB Services are made directly to the Board’s TSA.

“Please be informed that the Board frowns on any form of financial dealings between candidates and staff.

“Therefore, candidates involved in any financial transaction with a staff of the Board should notify the Board immediately and also provide any useful information about such staff for necessary action”.
