The consignment was first sent to the Headquarters of African Union (AU), Addis Ababa, Ethiopia by the Jack Ma Foundation for distribution to the continent. Nigeria’s share of the consignment arrived in Abuja on March 24, 2020 by the Nigerian Air Force cargo plane.

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health, Mr. Abdullahi Mashi Abdullazizi received the consignment in company of the Director, Port Health Services of the Ministry and Representatives of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, March 25, 2020.

The items were inspected by the Permanent Secretary, Officials of Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), NCDC, Nigerian Air Force and Journalists. The Consignment includes 100,000 Masks; 9,999 Face Shield; 20,000 Test Kits and 1000 Personal Protective Equipment (Groves).

Mr. Abdullazizi disclosed that the items will be distributed to all the 36 states of the federation and FCT to speed-up actions on the testing of suspected contact persons. He said that the federal government is doing a lot to curb the menace of COVID-19 through the Presidential Task Force set up by the President.

Speaking, the Director, Port Health Services, Dr. Morenike Alex-Okoh stated that with the donation of these items by Jack Ma Foundation, it would serve as encouragement to health service providers. She commended the cordial relationship between the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and Port Health Services of the Ministry.

The consignment was taken to the Federal Ministry Health Headquarters, Abuja, then to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) office, Abuja.

The Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, in a statement said the appointments and redeployments followed the recent promotion of some senior officers to the next higher ranks as well as the retirement of some senior officers.

He also explained that the move is a routine exercise aimed at further re-invigorating operational efficiency and enhancing service delivery.

“Branch Chiefs affected by the redeployment include AVM Oladayo Amao, the former Chief of Training and Operations (CTOP) Headquarters NAF (HQ NAF), who has now been appointed as the Chief of Policy and Plans (COPP); while AVM James Gwani, the erstwhile AOC Special Operations Command (SOC), has been appointed as the new CTOP. Additionally, AVM Musibau Olatunji has been appointed as the new Chief of Aircraft Engineering (CAcE), while AVM Mohammed Idris has been appointed as the Chief of Administration (COA) HQ NAF.

Also redeployed are “AVM Abubakar Liman, the erstwhile Commandant of the Armed Forces Resettlement Centre (AFRC), Oshodi, who has now been appointed as Commandant Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC), Jaji; AVM Kingsley Lar, the former COA HQ NAF, has been appointed as the Commandant of AFRC, Oshodi; while AVM Abdulganiyu Olabisi, the former AOC Logistics Command (LC) is now the Commandant, Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Kaduna.

Similarly, the new AOCs include: “AVM Olusegun Philip, who is now the AOC Tactical Air Command (AOC TAC) in Makurdi; AVM Charles Ohwo, the former AOC TAC, who is now the AOC SOC, Bauchi; AVM Ibukun Ojeyemi who has been appointed as the AOC Mobility Command (MC) in Yenagoa and AVM Musa Muktar who is the new AOC Air Training Command (ATC); while the former Commandant AFCSC, AVM Lawal Alao, is now the AOC LC, Ikeja.

Other senior officers redeployed  include AVM Anderson Kassimu who is now the Managing Director NAF Properties Limited; AVM Mohammed Suleiman who is appointed as the Chief of Defence Policy and Plans (CDPP), Defence Headquarters (DHQ), AVM Tunde Awoyoola as Chief of Defence Transformation and Innovation, DHQ; AVM Ubrufi Uzezi as Deputy Chief of the Defence Space Administration and AVM Charles Otegbade to the Air Traffic Services Training Centre (ATSTC), Kaduna as Commandant.

“Also affected are AVM Idi Lubo who is now the Director of Policy HQ NAF, AVM Ayoola Jolasinmi who is appointed as Director of Operations, AVM Aliyu Pani as the Director of Administration and Air Commodore Abraham Adole as Director of Training, HQ NAF.

“Also redeployed is the former Commander 011 Presidential Air Fleet (011 PAF), AVM Hassan Abubakar who is now the Chief of Staff (COS) MC, Yenagoa. He is to be replaced by Air Commodore Abubakar Abdullahi while Air Commodore Simon Peter is to take over as the Commander 053 NAF Camp, Abuja and Air Commodore Razak Olanrewaju is appointed as the new Commander 651 Bases Services Group, Ikeja.

The newly appointed and redeployed senior officers, according to Air Commodore Ibikunle are expected to take over their new offices not later than Tuesday, 7 January 2020.

The aircraft detailed by the Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation Lafiya Dole attacked the location following intelligence reports that a section of the settlement was serving as a training camp for the terrorists.

This was confirmed in a statement signed by the Air Force Spokesman, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola who also added that some buildings within the camp were being used to store fuel, arms and ammunition as well as other logistics supplies.

“The airstrike was executed after credible intelligence reports had established that a section of the settlement was serving as a training camp for the terrorists, while some buildings within the camp were being used to store their fuel, arms and ammunition as well as other logistics supplies.

“The pre-attack surveillance showed scores of fighters attempting to flee the location upon hearing the sound of the attack aircraft. They were engaged by the attack aircraft in successive passes, neutralising many of them. The terrorists’ logistics supply store, which was also hit, was seen engulfed in flames due to the raid,” the statement reads.

The terrorists’ logistics supply store was also destroyed during the raid.

The NAF further promised to sustain its efforts to completely destroy all remnants of the terrorists in the Northeast.

The Director of NAF Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, who announced the death of the soldiers in a statement on Thursday said: “It is with a heavy heart that I announce the death of the five crew members who were on board the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Mi-35M Helicopter which crashed in combat yesterday, 2 January 2019, while providing close air support to troops of 145 Battalion, Damasak in Borno State.”

The NAF personnel include Flight Lieutenant Perowei Jacob – pilot in command, and Flight Lieutenant Kaltho Paul Kilyofas – co-pilot.

Others are Sergeant Auwal Ibrahim – flight technician, Lance Corporal Adamu Nura – gunner, and Aircraftman Meshack Ishmael – gunner.

Air Commodore Daramola further disclosed that the remains of the deceased personnel have been recovered and taken to Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

“These gallant fallen heroes made the supreme sacrifice in the service of our Fatherland, for which the NAF, and indeed the entire Nation, owe them an unending debt of gratitude.

“The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, on behalf all officers, airmen, airwomen and civilian staff of the NAF, commiserates with the families of the five fallen heroes and prays that the Almighty grants their souls peaceful repose”, he continued.

The Air Force spokesman also informed that following the incident, the Air Chief paid a condolence visit to Maiduguri on Thursday.

He said Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar was in Borno to convey the condolences of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, President Muhammed Buhari, to personnel of the Air Task Force Operation LAFIYA DOLE over the unfortunate loss.

The Air Chief also received a condolence visit from the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, while in the state.

On behalf of the Force, Daramola thanked Nigerians for the support shown to the Service over the sad incident.

He, however called for more understanding and support with an assurance that the Air Force would continually strive to ensure the security of the nation and its people.
