OyoState Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ) has condemned the attack meted out to an hapless female journalist, Zainab Olayiwola and her children on Sunday in Ibadan, the state capital by an errant official of the Park Management System (PMS).

Olayiwola, an NUJ member and staff of Jamz FM, a Chapel that was inaugurated as a member of Oyo NUJ State Council last week in Ibadan was reportedly slapped by an official of the PMS, who also manhandled her kids, filtering away their luggage from a tricycle conveying them home.

The NUJ in a statement signed by its Chairman, Ademola Babalola and Secretary, Sola Oladapo on Monday tasked the State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde and the law enforcement agents to rein in, on the said official and ensure justice for Mrs. Olayiwola and her kids.

The PMS, is a special unit put in place by the Oyo State Government to manage the affairs of public transportation in the state after the proscription of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

The PMS has a former factional chairman of the NURTW in the state, Mr Mukaila Lamidi popularly known as ‘Auxiliary’, as the Chairman of its disciplinary committee.

While narrating her ordeal in the hands of the Chairman, Park Management System (PMS), Tricycle section at Orita-Challenge, Liberty Academy, Idi-Iroko area of Ibadan, Akeem Animashaun a.k.a System, she informed that the incident occured around 7pm, when she was heading home with her kids and had to take a tricycle popularly reffered to as Marwa.

“We were supposed to be taken home by my husband but unfortunately he recieved an urgent call to be somewhere else, hence the need for me and my kids to make use of public transport. We decided to take a tricycle, we boarded Animashaun’s tricycle and after some minutes, he told us to exit his tricycle that he was going to take some passengers on charter.

“That was when I told him that his action was not fair, that he did not tell us he was not going to take us to our destination. In the twinkle of an eye, he had already flinged my children’s bags away and started dragging them out of his tricycle.

“This action of his I protested and the next was that he gave me a very hot slap.

“Of course, because of the fact that he is a man, I could not retaliate, my children were crying and I was left helpless and stranded for quite some time,” she narrated.

The NUJ said the vicious attack on one of its members was not only barbaric, but also regrettable that “the outlawed NURTW members clothed in PMS uniform, had yet to learn their lessons like a leopard which hardly changes its spots.”

The Union insisted that the matter would not be allowed to be swept under the carpet until justice prevails.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council has mourned the passing of another former Chairman of the union, Elder Bode Oyewole.

Oyewole was Chairman of the NUJ between 1978 to 1980.

He was later Chairman of the Oluyole warriors, Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan.

Oyewole recently spoke with the incumbent, Ademola Babalola on July 3rd, 2020 following the news of the demise of one of his sucessors in office, Joe Abiola (a.k.a. Atumah).

Abiola, who also died about three weeks ago, took over from Oyewole and was NUJ Chairman for two terms, spanning between 1981 to 1985.

Oyewole had assured Babalola through phone call that he would grace the burial of Abiola and especially tributes being planned in honour of the deceased by NUJ. It comes up this Thursday at 2pm in Iyaganku press centre.

Lamenting the death of the erstwhile union leader, Babalola in a statement signed by the Secretary of NUJ, Comrade Sola Oladapo, on Tuesdaydescribed Oyewole’s passing as “shocking, devastating, unexpected, sad and one that caught the Union unawares”, because of the outstanding career of the erstwhile Chairman.

Oladapo said the news came when the executive was planning a special programme in honour of Abiola, saying, “the news of his demise came at a time when his wise counsel, experience and charismatic attributes as a father figure in NUJ and the society in general are much needed.”

The NUJ prays God to forgive Oyewole popularly called Uncle B.O, and grant him eternal rest.

It condole the family especially the wife, Mrs. Bose Oyewole, the children and the veteran journalists in the State and pray God to give them the fortitude to bear his irreplaceable loss.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State council on Sunday appealed to the Muhammadu Buhari led Federal Government to save the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan and provide it with enough funding to cater for the ravaging Coronavirus otherwise known as Covid-19.

The Union also frowned at recent development at the foremost teaching hospital in Nigeria, with confirmed four cases from its board and management.

In a release/tweet released by the CMD of the Hospital, Prof. Abiodun Otegbayo, he explained how he contracted the virus and tested positive for Covid-19.

The hospital management also confirmed that the Provost college of Medicine and his deputy also tested positive.

The fourth is the chairman of the board who had allegedly tested positive for the virus.

The NUJ in a press statement by its Chairman, Comrade Ademola Babalola and Secretary, Sola Oladapo wondered why due diligence was not done to ascertain the condition of all attendees at the meeting?

The Union also expressed concern on why the meeting had to hold despite the ongoing efforts to control Covid-19 spread in the state?

According to the NUJ, the CMD despite his knowledge of his exposure to a suspected case still went ahead granting interviews to journalists without warning them of his vulnerability.

The union viewed this act “as irresponsible and avoidable.”

The NUJ has therefore called on the Federal Government to stop paying lip service to the hospital.

It tasked the government to devise means of specially funding the UCH to prepare adequately for this pandemic.

“The reason to call for better funding of the UCH stemmed from the recent statement of the CMD, soliciting for funds from well meaning Nigerians to help the hospital with consumables and other medical necessities to fight the virus.

“The Federal Government must act very fast before things snowball out of control,” NUJ warned.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council has elected new executives to run the affairs of the union for the next three years.

Mr. Demola Babalola of Fresh FM conveniently secured 179 votes to emerge, chairman, defeating his only rival, Mr. Adewumi Faniran of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), who polled 6 votes, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

Also, Mr. Sola Oladapo of Federal Information Chapel had 175 votes to emerge, Secretary, while his rival, Mr Bola Ogunlayi of Time Nigeria Magazine polled 10 votes.

Continuing, Mr. Akeem Abas of NAN won the treasurer position after polling 167 votes to defeat Mrs. Busola Adetunji of the State Ministry of Information who polled 18 votes.

NAN reports that there was wild jubilation after the conclusion of the election and announcement of results of the three positions contested for.

NAN also added that the swearing-in of the newly elected officers was immediately conducted by Mr. Adebayo Salawu, an Ibadan based legal practitioner, in the presence of the Senior Assistant National Secretary of NUJ, Mr. Gbemiga Bamidele.

Babalola, while reacting to his victory vowed to uphold the constitution of the union during his tenure as well as treat all members with fairness and equity.

“Let me use this medium to thank all members who supported me and those who supported my opponent.

“It is indeed a great honour for me to be elected to lead this union and I promise to be chairman to all.

” There is a better future for our union. The election has come and gone, we are one big family in NUJ. I appeal to all and sundry to be part of this new administration”, he said.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Nigerian Tribune Chapel of NUJ, Mr. Tunde Busari advised the new executive to reflect on the past and fulfill its promises to uplift the union.

“Three years ago, Babalola lost the election but today he has won. He must use his experience outside of power to achieve the purpose for which he aspired for the position of chairman of the Oyo State Council of NUJ.

“I believe if he does that his administration will be successful”.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Correspondents’ Chapel has commended the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila and his deputy, Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase for appointing its members as his media aides.

The Union, in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, the nation’s capital and jointly signed by the Chairman of the Chapel, Philip Nyam and the Secretary, Jide Oyekunle, applauded Gbajabiamila and Wase, saying by these appointments, they have confirmed their confidence in Nigerian media.

” Your Excellency, you have broken the jinx that have existed over the years with the appointment of round pegs in round holes, which will continue to be a reference point in the annals of history. It gladdens our heart that you have taken professionalism and expertise in selecting your information managers.

” We commend you for appointing these highly proficient persons, Lanre Lasisi of Channels TV, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi of Daily Trust, Chief Press Secretary and Dele Anofi of The Nation Newspapers as Special Assistant (Print Media).

“We equally appreciate the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase for appointing Mohammed Umar Puma of Peoples Daily Newspapers as Chief Press Secretary.

” It is our hope that these highly cerebral and tested journalists imbued with experience will contribute immensely towards the achievement of your policy agenda of ” Nation Building; a Joint Task”, the statement reads.

According to the Chapel, by choosing to appoint journalists who report from the House of Representatives as their aides, it is an indication that both presiding officers appreciate the media and the exploits of those they have chosen.

The Chapel, also noted that Gbajabiamila is the first speaker and in deed the first presiding officer ever in the history of the Nigerian parliament to appoint three journalists covering the same beat as his media aides at the same time.

“It is gratifying to note that the speaker respects professionalism. Instead of appointing nonprofessionals, the speaker has acknowledged the contributions of the journalists reporting the Parliament, and handed them the responsibility of managing his image. This is a master stroke and we believe with these appointments, the 9th House would have a seamless working relationship with the media”

” We congratulate Lanre Lasisi, the Special Adviser, Media and Publicity; Musa Abdullahi Krishi, the Chief Press Secretary and Dele Anofi, the Special Assistant (print media) and Mohammed Umar Puma, Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker on their well deserved appointments.

“We urge you not to betray the confidence the speaker has in you, the House Press Corps and Nigerian journalism in general.

“We can attest to the fact that these three gentlemen are journalists of high standing; and we have no doubt that they will do the journalism profession proud and serve the nation with the best of their ability”, the statement added.

The group further assured, ” Mr. Speaker, the chapel will like to assure you that our members covering House of Representatives will continue to collaborate with the 9th National Assembly to ensuring strategic communication of your policies and programmes”.
