THE Oyo State Police Command has paraded no fewer than nine suspected cultists, said to be allegedly responsible for the death of a member of the Polytechnic Ibadan Students’ Forum, Olatunji Hammed (aka Maku)

They reportedly confessed to have been involved in the murder on August 27 of Hammed, a former student of The Polytechnic, Ibadan at the Apete area of Ibadan.

Parading the suspects at the state Police Command Headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan, on Wednesday, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abiodun Odude, disclosed that the cultists were arrested in Ibadan by his men at the Sango and Apete Police Divisions following a discreet investigation carried out by the Anti-Robbery Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID).

Six days after arrest, kidnapper who took Tramadol still sleeping

According to the Police chief, Odude, “Those arrested have confessed to their membership of the Aiye Confraternity and they are agents of Lucifer, masquerading as cultists, causing unrest in The Polytechnic, Ibadan and its neighbouring communities.

“Their nefarious activities took another dimension when they mowed down a former student of the polytechnic in cold blood at Apete area. They were arrested by our men of Anti-Robbery Section of the SCIID.

Exclusive: Oyo govt increases subvention to tertiary institutions

“The suspects were arrested with various arms and ammunition with other exhibits. They will soon be charged to court for proper prosecution.

Odude further gave the names of the suspects as Fatai Akinola (33), John Amgbare (30 who is 2nd in Command in the cult group), Oladapo Tope (28, from whom a gun and cartridges were recovered), Sodiq Adekola (25) and Oludayo Olumide (33).

Others include, Aremu Paul (24), Adebiyi Oluwajuwonlo (30), Martins Adegbegi (26) and Ogunfuwa Oriyomi (20).

Exhibits recovered from the cultists are one locally-made cut-to-size single-barrelled gun, two axes, cutlasses, charms, calabashes and other fetish items.

One of the suspected cultists, Akinola, who confessed to be the Number One member of the Aiye Confraternity in The Polytechnic Ibadan revealed, “I am a student of The Polytechnic Ibadan. I am the number one of the Aye Confraternity in Ibadan, but I am not the one who killed Maku, and I don’t know who killed him.

“Though I learnt that the deceased had a quarrel with one of us, (Sunday, popularly called Apata, who is now at large), and I am aware that our group had a clash with other groups. But I still can’t really say if the deceased died in the process because we had settled the matter. But later I got to know that the matter had gone beyond our own settlement. I am not the killer of Maku. I am just a suspect”, he added.

OYO state governor, Sen Abiola Ajimobi on Friday vowed that the perpetrators of the Bodija Market crisis will be prosecuted and made to rehabilitate the burnt police station.

The Governor, who visited the market, the burnt police station and the Central Abattoir at Amosun in company of the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abiodun Odude, reiterated that his administration will not tolerate hooliganism and thuggery, saying that government will not fold its hands and allow some dissidents to destroy its seven years labour of restoring peace and safety in the state.

https://iso.keq.mybluehost.me/oyo-butchers-commend-govt-as-ibadan-central-abattoir-commences-operation-2/

Governor Ajimobi condoled with the traders and people at the Bodija Market, assuring that the government may reopen the market within the next 48hrs after due consultation with the security agencies, the community and market leaders and the leaders of the local government area.

The governor stated that only an enemy of development and progress will condemn the action of the government to relocate the butchers to the central abattoir, explaining that the management of the Central Abattoir is being handled by the 11 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Ibadan and its Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), the National Butchers Union of Nigeria (NUBN), the Oyo State Government and the Public Private Partnership arrangement.

He said that the Central Abattoir at Amosun village is an ultra-modern facility equipped with state – of – the art facility, pipe borne water, animal health centre, police post among others, noting that the health condition of the general public is one of the primary concerns of the government and proper hygiene should be put in place in an environment where meat is being produced for millions of people.

The governor said that the Bodija Abattoir was closed last year due to the poor hygienic situation of the abattoir as the cow dung was left unpacked for four months, saying, “the market was closed in 2017 for three days because of the sanitation implications. There was unhealthy treatment of cattle blood, offensive odours, unhygienic spread of meat, air pollution due to gaseous emission from the cow dung and the government was concerned about the likely epidemic disease from flies spread.

“We are talking about the general health of the people and not just the minute section in the market as every citizen of the state has one or two things to do with the Bodija Market. The decision to have a central abattoir for the Ibadan butchers predated my administration and we saw the need to relocate the butchers as well. We started discussing with them since five years ago before we eventually relocated them this year.

“We had series of stakeholders’ meeting and signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the smooth relocation. All parties agreed to our resolutions and that is why I am surprised that we still have dissidents fomenting trouble. We are always in the habit of politicizing issues in the state. Majority of the butchers have moved and we have received commendations from their union, National Union of Butchers of Nigeria.

“Let me assure you that the perpetrators of this violence will not go unpunished and they will rehabilitate the police station. People must be allowed to pay for their deeds. We did not destroy anybody’s stall or shop but government’s slaughter slabs. Or is there any crime in destroying what is not useful for the government again? We have not stopped them from selling meat at the Bodija market but no more slaughtering of cow there due to the poor hygienic condition. There was also resistance when butchers were moved from Gege to Bodija, so the resistance is not new but the crisis and violence were unnecessary.

“We are working at reopening the market at the earliest possible time as we do not want to deprive our people their means of livelihood. But, we must be assured that adequate measures are put in place to forestall the repeat of the crisis. We may likely open the market in the next 48hours,” Governor Ajimobi said.

Speaking, the Babaloja of Bodjia Market, Alhaji Sumaila Jimoh appreciated the governor for the swift action in quenching the crisis, appealing that Governor Ajimobi should temper justice with mercy and reopen the market.

Alhaji Jimoh said that the Bodija market people are peace loving but some butchers were always fomenting trouble even with the traders at the market, commending that the government has done well by relocating the butchers to the central abattoir at Amosun Village.

THE Oyo State Police Command says it has arrested over 1,000 members of ‘One Million Boys’ and charged over 400 of them to court.

The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abiodun Odude, disclosed this on Monday while speaking at a town hall meeting entitled: ‘Public-Private Partnership in Security Funding: Introduction of Security Levy in Oyo State,’ organised by OYSSTF at the House of Chiefs, Parliament Building, Secretariat, Ibadan.

‘One Million Boys‘, is a notorious Ibadan cult group which has been giving residents sleepless nights in recent times.

Also, the Police chief lauded the Ajimobi-led administration for introducing OYSSTF and ‘Operation Burst’ , saying with this, the government has placed security issues on the front burner and made it the least crime infested state in Nigeria.

He maintained that security agencies have been trying their best with government’s support to nip crime and criminality in the bud, noting that security is a collective responsibility of all and sundry.

Odude said, “in the last one year, the police have arrested more than 1,000 members of ‘One Million Boys’ and we have charged over 400 of them to court”.

NO fewer than four policemen have been hospitalized after being injured during a clash between the police and students of the Federal College of Agriculture, Moor Plantation, Apata Ibadan, on Monday, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abiodun Odude disclosed.

The commissioner also added that eight police vans were damaged in the clash. It was gathered that the students occupied the Ibadan-Abeokuta road as early as 6:30 am, blocking the main road linking Oyo and Ogun states, with road users stranded as both commercial and private vehicles were forced to take alternative routes to their destination. The Provost, as learnt invited the police when the students blocked the main road.

It was gathered that the students were protesting against the school management, while specifically calling for the removal of the Provost of the school, Dr. Babajide Adenekan, following the disagreement between Adenekan and members of the school’s Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic, Non Academic Staff Union and the Senior Staff Association of Universities, Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutes and Associated Institutions.

The issue had been on for more than one year, a lecturer in the school who confided in journalists revealed

In her words, “there has been clash between the provost and lecturers of the school. Some lecturers have been suspended and reinstated while some claimed their allowances were withheld by the provost illegally. The claims are many.

“But this time, the students were expressing their grievances over the administrative style of the provost. They are claiming that the style of the provost triggered several strikes and unnecessary delay in the school’s academic calendar. They are also calling for the removal of the provost.”

According to the students, the police shot at them during the protest with some of them sustaining gunshot injuries. They also added that a lecturer was injured in the clash.

The police had arrested five students for their involvement in the fracas, just as Odude confirmed that there had been several meetings between the school authority, the students and the police on how to resolve the unending crisis in the school.

“It has been an off and on situation. We have been on this for the past six months meeting them and trying to resolve the issue. We have met the students’ union leaders and the school authority.

“We told the students that they should limit their union activities within the school because once you deprive others the use of public facility, you are against the law. Today (Monday), they blocked the main road during protest and we sent police there but they became violent and attacked the policemen.

“Four of them were injured and they are now in hospital. Eight police vans were destroyed too. We have to use force to push them back into the school. If you are students, it does not give you the liberty to break laws. Those who were arrested will be charged to court after due investigation”, the commissioner submitted.
