The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has debunked reports that fleeing inmates from the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje, during the attack, stole money (local and foreign currencies) belonging to their fellow inmates.

The Service Public Relations Officer (SPRO), Mr Abubakar Umar, confirmed this in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.

Some media reports had alleged that personnel at the Kuje Custodial Centre could not account for the sums of N82 million and $36,000 cash belonging to inmates.

Recall that scores of terrorists had, on July 5, launched an attack on the facility, bombing their way in.

The terrorists freed 879 inmates, among whom were at least 64 who were detained on terror-related charges.

Umar, however, said that its personnel didn’t keep such huge sums within custodial facilities.

According to him, the clarification became imperative against the misleading narrative the unfounded information had generated and the diversion of attention from addressing the challenges at stake.

He said all inmates’ cash deposited in the custody of the authorities of the custodial centre was intact and safe.

He said, “There is an existing instruction from the Controller General, NCoS, Mr Haliru Nababa that all officers superintending custodial centres must not keep huge sums in the facility.”

Umar reported Nababa as sparing no effort or resources in hunting down all the escapees.

He added that it was heart-warming that the integrated strategies were yielding favourable results.

Nababa expressed appreciation to security agencies and patriotic Nigerians whose collaboration was facilitating the recovery.

He assured the public of his irrevocable commitment to bringing back all escapees to answer for their crimes.

No fewer than twenty armed robbers stormed once peaceful Alaafia Estate in Orogun, Ibadan, Oyo State around 11pm on Sunday night and operated till around 2am on Monday morning dispossessing residents of valuables running into millions of naira.

The robbers who made first appearance at the Estate about two weeks ago when they robbed a Superintendent of Police and three flats were said to have mobilised more gang members in a more deadly robbery where they carted away money, laptops, mobile phones and ATM card after obtaining their Personal Identification Numbers (PIN).

The robbers were said to have gained entry into the Estate through the recently dredged Carnal linking Barika, Agbowo, and Orogun.

Armed with machete, Guns and other dangerous weapons, the dare devil robbers divided themselves into the Estate and robbed concurrently in House number 33, 31, 25 among others.

Our man gathered that no fewer than twenty families were direct victims of the robbers with one Peter in House 33 sustaining machete cuts on his left hand while the wife was said to have been beaten with machete.

They forcefully gained entrance into their victims’ apartments, moving boastfully and daring the residents to come out if they were up to the task.

At house 31, where at least twelve flats were robbed, the robbers forced their victims to use the POS which they brought but when network failed the transfer, they obtained the PIN and went away with their ATMS.

As they moved to House 25, where the robbers were said to have accused some residents to have peeped through the window during their last operation in the Estate, doors and properties were badly destroyed as they threatened to unleash hell on them as they battle to break the security.

A resident said: “as they battle to break into the house, one of them was telling the new ones they recruited to join them this time around that somebody was peeping through the window from the house. They said we would see hell if they break into the house if we don’t willingly open the door”.

However, the Ojoo Police Division were said to have mobilised to the Estate blowing serene and releasing gun shots as they made their way into the Estate.

Hearing the gunshots, another resident told our man that the robbers shouted on themselves “big daddy (police) are here; won ti mbo, e ja ke lo.”

The police were said to have recovered four machetes and a locally made pistol around the scene of the robbery.

Narrating their ordeal, one of the victims who pleaded anonymity said “When they came, they jumped into our house and shot into the air. They started saying awon daa, wey money, they entered around 12:45am and left around 1:45am for other buildings.”

Can you see your world in the open is a direct translation of the Yoruba se o r’aye e l’ode? It’s deployed at a moment of extreme let-down, incomparable frustration, an intersection where a misdemeanor has absolutely ridiculed and discredited the person in question.

The heist of the late General Sani Abacha, stashed away in different countries of the world, that are coming in droves back to the country, is my subject.

This was a heist which the self-same Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari, had persistently denied as non-existent, literally beatifying his late benefactor, Sani Abacha, as above board.

Excluding tranches of the loot recently returned to Nigeria, the countryside’s has, in the past 18 years, recovered $4.6 billion (1.4trn) of her treasury looted by Abacha. While the United States Embassy in Nigeria recently announced the sum of $319m (N121bn) loot repatriated from the United Kingdom and France and handed back to Nigeria, this repatriated fund was different from one of about a week ago where the sum of $311 million Abacha loot from the US and the Bailiwick of Jersey were also funneled back into the country.

In a statement last week, the embassy said: “The funds returned last week are distinct and separate from an additional $167m in stolen assets also forfeited in the United Kingdom and France, as well as $152m still in active litigation in the United Kingdom.”

At every point of the looted funds’ repatriation to Nigeria, these countries where the looted funds were earlier domiciled diplomatically but unambiguously made it known that they do not trust Nigerian leaders not to re-loot the looted funds. In fact, their trenchant shouts while returning the funds are revelatory of their disposition.

The one of February, 2020 even came with the caveat and a tripartite agreement signed by Nigeria with the US government and the Bailiwick of Jersey that upon the return of the money, it would be spent on specific infrastructure projects, to wit the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Second Niger Bridge and the Abuja-Kano Expressway.

At another point, there were frenetic moves by the US and United Kingdom governments against the plan of the Nigerian government to gift Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, Kebbi State governor, who was alleged to be an enabler and accomplice of the laundered money, the sum of $110 million out of the recovered funds.

Recently too, a warning came from the United States Justice Department that, should Nigeria fail to spend the repatriated funds on the agreed public projects, she would refund the money.

I don’t know if you know that these veiled threats didn’t come without an underlining perception or intelligence reports about our government’s disposition to public funds in its care. Nigerian governments, the so-called Mai Gaskiya’s inclusive, are known to the globe to be rapaciously corrupt, adding to this corruption medal another medallion of shamelessness. The way the globe polices monies that are Nigeria’s but stolen by a Nigerian despot of incomparable filching mentality, is embarrassingly unprecedented. Can Mai Gaskiya see his world in the open is the most fitting epithet to describe this shamelessness

President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed to probe the $16bn allegedly spent on the power sector during the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government of ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo.

He said this at the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential rally in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state capital, on Tuesday.

PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar was Obasanjo’s deputy from 1999-2007 when the money was allegedly spent

Buhari said: “The previous government mentioned on their own that they spent 16 billion American dollars for power. But you are better witnesses than myself.

“Where is the power? Where is the money? We will follow them and eventually God willing we will get them and we will get our money back.”

However, speaking at a meeting with at the secretariat complexes of the Councils of Traditional Rulers of Rivers and Bayelsa states, the president said: “I assure you that I’m all out for free, fair and credible elections. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC knows my stand on this.

“Nigerians are assured of free and fair elections. Under this leadership, nobody will be allowed to intimidate other citizens. Nobody will be allowed to snatch ballot boxes and run with them. I will make sure that the votes count.”

Buhari commended the introduction of the Permanent Voters Card, PVC and Card Reader, and urged the nation to embrace the technology, arguing that without it, the sixteen years of misrule by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP would not have been brought to an end.

“In 16 years, the PDP thought nobody could remove them from office. The introduction of the PVC and Card Reader made sure that our votes counted in 2015 and the votes of Nigerians will count in 2019,” he stressed.

The Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay has stated that the Economic and Financial Crimes commission, EFCC, recovers stolen money from the former minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke on daily basis.

Sagay told the former ruling Peoples Democratic Party to remember that embattled Alison-Madueke was one of its products.

He was reacting to the 19th anniversary celebration of the party.

He, therefore, called on the former ruling party to celebrate it with sober reflection instead of boasting about its “achievements.”

He said the Buhari administration had recovered nearly a trillion naira alone this year from officials who served under the PDP.

The PACAC chairman asked the PDP to apologise to Nigerians and turn a new leaf as this was the only way to regain the confidence of Nigerians.

Sagay added, “I am disappointed in the PDP. If they are celebrating 19 years, they should celebrate with caution and give the nation an assurance that they would not bring such negative impact on our nation again and they have turned a new leaf.

“Yes, President Obasanjo was the one who proposed the establishment of the EFCC and the ICPC? After Nuhu Ribadu left the EFCC, what became of the EFCC? These people just neutralised these agencies and turned this country into an ATM from which they kept on withdrawing money until there was nothing left.

“So, they destroyed our economy; their greed was overwhelming. If you look at Diezani for instance, there is no day that goes by that money is not recovered from her. In Thursday’s papers, it was reported that the EFCC had recovered about half a trillion naira from these people.”

MARRIAGE is a formal union between a man and woman which is recognized by custom, religion and law. Our discussion for this edition will be based on love and money in relation to marriage. Love and money are two things that individuals feel strongly about. A lot of relationships are started because of the need for either of the two. Now the question to be trashed is which one of the two ‘love or money’ should be regarded as the key to a successful marriage.

The dictionary defines Love as “a strong affection for or attachment or devotion to a person or persons”.

Love is a very important issue in marriage; love comes first in any healthy relationship. Love is a behavior. A relationship thrives when partners are committed to behaving lovingly through continual, unconditional giving. Intimate love emanates from knowledge and giving, it comes not overnight but overtime which nearly always means after marriage. The intensity many couples feel before marrying is usually great affection boosted by commonality, chemistry and anticipation.

These may be the seeds of love but yet to sprout. On the wedding day, emotions run high, but true love should be at its lowest, because it will hopefully always be growing, as husband and wife gives more and more to each other. ‘Love is for better or worse which means till death do us part, but today love is for better or best’.

Love should be the criteria for marriage, when there is true love in a marriage, the marriage brings mutual comfort and each member of the family grow as a person in love and security. Loving someone and being in loved brings happiness. Love is essential to the human race. We need to help each other, cooperate with each other, and reaffirm each other. Love finds its natural and proper expression in the union of two persons.

Love is considered to give meaning to life to overcome all obstacles and to offer a share in eternity. Respect for the dignity of the beloved is given in union through marriage.

On the other hand , ‘Money’ can be described as “a person’s wealth, including properties”. Money is an aspect of marriage which must not be neglected.

The main purpose of money in marriage is to provide for the family, have control over the family and make the family comfortable. Money has answers to all things, likewise money is the root of all evil, money has become reason why people kill, steal and destroy. There are so many cases where spouse betray and even kill one another for money; in such marriages do you think love was the foundation or money. Money is one thing that cannot be taken out of marriage. Money fuels the love one has for a spouse.

For most marriages, money has the main contention as some people say ‘no money, no love’, money prevail love in today’s society but come to think of it, for instance, it is believed that you can get all you want through money, money can generate love but can it buy love?. If love is like religion, then it cannot be bought nor can it be negotiated and compromised, Love seems to be similar to both, but identical to either.

Money is still very essential in marriage because with money you can finance the family, make connections for the family and also make lovely home. But if money is said to answer all things ‘why do you think we have high rate of divorce among the rich families?’

The role of money in generating or in transacting loving relationships is expressed, for example, in the content of personal advertisement seeking romantic partners, thus, the requirement that prospective partners are financially secure is often mentioned in adverts placed by women.

Indeed, while both men and women consider good looking partners, some consider other qualities, such as status and money, to compensate for looks. It is interesting to note that many men prefer a spouse who makes less money than they do and whose occupational status is low than theirs.

But this is due to men’s concern about their self-esteem rather than to the issue of love. It might, however, be indicated that money influence the generation of love. Money can improve our situation in a way that gives us more occasions for happiness but all the same can it be all it takes to have a happy and successful marriage.

At this junction, is it true that “true love can never be bought by gold or silver” nor should we say “money answered everything”?

Agreeing with various opinions, love is said to come first in any relationship, so it should be the most paramount criteria for successful marriage. Following the views, love should not be one-sided which means that “love is like a rubber band held at both ends by two people and when one leaves it hurts the other”.

Despite all that have been discussed, the decision still depends on individual. Love, accompanied with understanding and a bit of adjustment, makes a marriage go a long way, with money to handle the cost of transportation, of course. The two aspects, love and money is a decision you cannot make for any one depending on the relationship.

To make the point, if you were stuck on a desert island, would you rather have N1billion or some water and a raft? I think it’s more about understanding the emotional response that money causes in people and how this influences love.

However, the goal of a person is to find someone that has a total package that is valuable to a person, no matter whom you choose there are upgrades out there in certain areas.

There is someone with better heart, someone with better looks, someone with more money and someone who is better at making you a better person. It all comes down to the balance at all attribute that are desirable to a person which means despite what has been said this issue still depends on individual interest. The most important is to find the best package for yourself; this does not mean that anyone is perfect in all areas.
