A Senior Advocate of Nigeria and Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, has punctured the judicial panel of inquiry set up to investigate cases of police brutality and SARS-related abuses across the country.

The minister who was responding to a question about the position of the government specifically regarding a leaked report by the Lagos judicial panel, described the panel as illegal.

“I will not answer this question as a sitting minister. I will answer this question as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and so, I am entitled to my own opinion. This is not the Federal Government’s position.

“For me, that panel was an illegal panel”, the human rights lawyer said while featuring on Channel’s Television Sunday Politics programme monitored by Mega Icon Magazine.

Keyamo’s remarks come days after the leaked report by the panel indicted the operatives of the Nigerian Army and Police, emphasizing that they indeed shot at unarmed protesters.

Although, the report has yet to be officially released, days later, the panel submitted its findings to the Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

One of the reports was on claims of police brutality while the other was on the shooting in the Lekki area of Lagos State on October 20, 2020.

Also, the Nigerian army had, however, denied shooting live rounds at protesters, telling the judicial panel that only blanks were used.

As part of efforts to further get to the root of the matter, Governor Sanwo-Olu on Monday, set up a four-member committee led by Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN) to raise a White Paper on the reports submitted by the judicial panel.

Keyamo’s comments come two days before the committee is expected to submit its recommendations to the National Economic Council (NEC) for discussion and possible implementation.

The meeting which took place at the State House in Marina, Lagos, was set up to discuss strategies aimed at improving child education in public schools across the state, with an emphasis on the girl child.

Remarking, Governor Sanwo-Olu lauded Zuriel for her role in championing child education across the African continent and beyond, even as he expressed the state’s readiness to collaborate with the filmmaker and her partners on initiatives that would have deep seated impact in the lives of children in public primary schools.

Quoting statistics, Sanwo-Olu said Lagos represents 0.4% of Nigeria’s territorial landmass with more public primary schools than in Ghana, hence the need for long lasting reforms in the state’s education system.

The governor said the ongoing Excellence in Child Education and Learning project dubbed “EKO EXCEL,” was launched to establish a culture of learning, while bridging the communication gap between teachers and thousands of students across the 1,016 public primary schools in the state.

Responding, Zuriel, brand ambassador of Hertz Nigeria, a franchise car rental company operated by C&I Leasing Plc, spoke on her double-pronged vision of having the government infuse practical, skills-based learning and e-learning courses into public school curriculums in the state.

She expressed confidence that children could at a young age be nurtured to explore their creativity by learning practical skills such as filmmaking, thus setting them up to make a living for themselves in the near future- a cause she informed the governor she was willing to pursue at sub-national level.

Also speaking during the visit, Maureen Ogbonna, Group Head, Research and strategy at C&I Leasing Plc, commended the Lagos state governor for the impactful initiatives put in place to reverse the trend of education inequities state-wide.

Ogbonna further reiterated C&I Leasing’s commitment to continuously support commendable projects aimed at empowering children with quality education, while also exploring youth employability and skills development initiatives in line with the company’s Corporate Responsibility (CSR) framework.

IN line with its commitment to skills development and the empowerment of entrepreneurs in Nigeria, GE, the world’s premier digital industrial company, this week partnered with the Lagos State Government and others to host a technology conference for Nigerian startups in the US.

The conference, which was a result of collaborative efforts between the Lagos State Government, John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, Microsoft and GE, was held in Washington DC from Monday, April 23 to Thursday, April 26 with over 15 leading Nigerian tech entrepreneurs and startups in attendance.

Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwumi Ambode, delivered the keynote speech entitled ‘The Role of Technopreneurs in Lagos: An Emerging Smart City’ at the conference which further affirmed GE’s commitment to skills training programs for young Nigerian entrepreneurs.

A key highlight of the conference was a training workshop facilitated by GE Ventures, the venture capital subsidiary of General Electric, which shared valuable insights on how to position a startup to win with investors. There was also a roundtable discussion with key stakeholders around the theme: ‘Harnessing technology to catalyze Africa’s future.’

Jay Ireland, CEO & President, GE Africa said that the conference was a continuation of the ongoing partnership between GE and the Lagos State government aimed at developing the skills of young entrepreneurs in the state. “GE remains committed to supporting skills development in Nigeria, and across Africa. We see ourselves as partners in building a sustainable future for Africa, and we believe that fora such as create a platform for necessary conversations and learning. Lagos is a major economic hub in Africa populated by thousands of young people who when equipped with the right skills, can create positive change.” Ireland said.

https://iso.keq.mybluehost.me/south-west-governors-formally-admit-lagos-into-odua-investment-group/

GE’s most visible commitment to skills development in Nigeria is the Lagos Garage, a hub launched in 2016, for advanced manufacturing-based innovation, strategy development, idea generation and collaboration. Co-located with the GE Lagos offices in Victoria Island, the Lagos Garage offers year-round series of skills training programs focused on building the next generation of Nigerian entrepreneurs. Till date, 229 entrepreneurs have graduated the program having been trained to use the latest in advanced manufacturing technologies; 3D printers, CNC mills, and laser cutters as well as in business development.
