The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed reports of an alleged impeachment plot against Governor Seyi Makinde, describing the claim as “a badly written script” designed to distract the public and generate sympathy for the governor.

The party also alleged that the narrative was being used to project the governor as a victim amid rising political tension in the state.

Some members of the Oyo State House of Assembly, reportedly loyal to Governor Makinde, had on Tuesday denied involvement in any impeachment plot. The lawmakers also claimed that certain prominent figures, including President Bola Tinubu, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, and former First Lady in the state, Mrs Florence Ajimobi, were being wrongly linked to the alleged plot.

But in a statement issued in Ibadan on Wednesday by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the APC dismissed the claims, insisting that they were unfounded and politically motivated.

The party faulted the inclusion of the named personalities, describing it as “unsubstantiated and misleading.”

The APC said: “Governor Makinde ought to have been impeached long ago if members of the State House of Assembly were alive to their responsibilities, in view of several cases of abuse of office recorded against him since May 2019.”

It further alleged that the impeachment narrative was orchestrated by the governor’s allies to manipulate public perception ahead of future political developments.

“Governor Makinde just decided to get some of his yes-men to implement a badly written script aimed at offering him a soft landing in the minds of gullible supporters, especially now that it is almost certain that he might not have a political party to sponsor any candidate in the 2027 general elections,” the statement added.

The APC also claimed the story was designed to divert attention from recent allegations raised by former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, over alleged moves concerning the Olubadan stool.

“Sad enough, an informed source had it that the impeachment story was sold to mitigate the effects of the revelation made by former Governor Ayodele Fayose about the plan to dethrone the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja (Arusa 1). But no external person is interested in an impeachment process against a governor who has already reached a cul-de-sac,” it stated.

The party maintained that no amount of propaganda or blackmail would stop what it described as the inevitable political consequences facing the governor.

“Meanwhile, no amount of blackmail or propaganda can save Governor Makinde from impeachment. Allegations of misappropriation of local government funds, land scams, contract inflation, and diversion of the federal government’s N50 billion relief fund meant for victims of the Bodija explosion are impeachable offences which shall come to bear sooner than later,” the APC added.

It insisted that the impeachment claim was merely a diversionary tactic that would ultimately fail.

The Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) has begun mobilising prominent sons and daughters of the ancient city to support a weeklong programme in honour of the coronation of the new Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja.

The former governor and senator will be crowned the 44th Olubadan next Friday, September 26, at the historic Mapo Hall.

CCII President-General, Chief Ajeniyi Ajewole, has inaugurated a high-powered organising committee to coordinate activities for the celebration. The committee is co-chaired by two billionaire businessmen, Engr. Dotun Sanusi and Chief Adegboye Adegoke.

Although the Oyo State Government had earlier inaugurated a committee chaired by Chief Adebayo Oyero to handle the coronation proper, CCII said it resolved to expand the scope of the celebration to reflect the stature of the monarch-designate.

According to the group, Oba Ladoja’s status as a successful businessman, politician, and elder statesman sets him apart from his predecessors, hence the need for a more elaborate programme.

Already, some frontline Ibadan indigenes have reportedly committed N10 million each to the celebration. The committee has also secured live broadcast rights with Arise TV, Channels Television, TVC, Solution FM, Ilaji FM and other national stations to beam the event.

The weeklong programme will commence with inter-religious prayers on Monday, September 22, at the Olubadan’s Palace, Oke-Aremo. A stage play on the progenitor of the Olubadan throne, Arusa, will hold at Apex Hall, Yidi Agodi.

On Tuesday, September 23, a cultural day will be staged at Olubadan Stadium. The first Olubadan coronation lecture will take place the following day at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, with globally acclaimed historian, Prof. Toyin Falola, as guest lecturer.

Thursday, September 25, coincides with Oba Ladoja’s 81st birthday. Islamic prayers are scheduled for 10 a.m. at the palace, while a mega praise and worship session will be held at the Civic Centre, Agodi, from 2 p.m.

The coronation proper holds on Friday, September 26, at Mapo Hall from 9 a.m. A reception by the royal family will follow at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium by 3 p.m.

On Sunday, September 28, a thanksgiving service will take place at the Church of Ascension, Bodija. This will be followed by a civic reception at the University of Ibadan’s International Conference Centre.

Other post-coronation programmes include a Jumat service at Ibadan Central Mosque, Oja’ba, on Friday, October 3, and an “Isese” traditional worshippers’ event at Ose Meji Temple, Oja’ba, on Saturday, October 4.

Former Governor of Oyo State and the Otun Olubadan of Ibadan land, High Chief Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja on Tuesday congratulated Muslims on the occasion of this year’s Eid-El-Kabir, urging Nigerians and the residents of the state to imbibe the spirit of love and sacrifice for the good of the country.

Chief Ladoja congratulate all muslim brothers and sisters on the occasion of the Eid-El-Kabir celebration, adding that despite all challenges, God has kept Nigeria alive with his mercy.

The former governor, in a statement in Ibadan, also wished the Muslim faithful happy celebrations, just as he urged Nigerians to imbibe the spirit of sacrifice and faith exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim who was ready to sacrifice his only son until a ram was provided by Allah.

It read, “We must pray for peaceful co-existence and unity of Nigeria. Every great country and people go through trials and tribulations, but with faith in God they overcome. We have a responsibility to ensure that we share what we have with the needy, and pray for the unity and peace of Nigeria.

“We have no any other country than Nigeria, so we must always live in unity and love. This occasion calls for celebration because God has kept us alive despite the challenges. I urge every one to imbibe the spirit of forgiveness, embrace peace and imbibe a new level of patriotism to make our country greater, more prosperous and peaceful.

“My prayer is that Allah (SWT) will accept the act of worship and sacrifices of our Muslim brothers and sisters”, the statement added.

Barely a few months after the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential elections, there were several meetings of leaders of the resistance against military rule. Most such meetings did not take place in the open but in the confines of the homes of the core leaders of the struggle. One such place would be the home of Chief Abraham Adesanya on Douala Road in Apapa, Lagos. The rare opportunity I had was due to the involvement of Chief Isaac Jolapamo, who on many occasions would allow me to accompany him to Chief Adesanya’s house, even though I never participated in any of their deliberations. The house was a walking distance from Chief Jolapamao’s Morlap Shipping Office in Apapa. It was also a short walk from Chief Rashidi Ladoja’s shipping company. There would be many combinations of personalities on such occasions – academicians, politicians, economists, and analysts as they tried to chart the ways forward in hush tones. To date, I found the combination of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Chief Isaac Jolapamo, and Chief Rashidi Ladoja.

Of this trio, Bola Tinubu was the youngest, while Chief Rashidi Ladoja was the oldest. In Yoruba land, you could tell the age disparity from the mode of greetings and how people address one another in a conversation. Chief Isaac Jolapamo would be the first to stretch his hand (In Yoruba land, the senior must stretch his hands first), and Bola Tinubu would approach the hand with a bow. Tinubu would refer to Chief Isaac Jolapamo as “Egbon” or “Egbon mi” – one hundred percent of the time. Chief Rashidi Ladoja would refer to Bola Tinubu as simply “Bola” just as he would refer to Chief Jolapamo simply as “Isaac.” Not just among the three, Bola Tinubu was relatively younger than most of the people whom I would see among these leaders in those early days of what was later known as the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO). But you could tell he had the respect of others. His delivery was always clear, although he was not loquacious. You could tell that Bola Tinubu was made mostly of brain matter. At a point, I summoned the courage to ask Chief Jolapamo how he knew Bola Tinubu. His response was simply, “Aburo wa daadaa ni, ni Mobil” (“He was our good younger brother in Mobil.”). That is why I laugh when some people refer to Tinubu, for political reasons, as an old man and assign him ages based on whims, caprices, and unfounded speculations. How could he now be older than Chief Isaac Jolapamo (74) or Chief Rashidi Ladoja (78), when he was far younger than them in 1994? Funny enough, Chief Pious Akinyelure who hired Bola Tinubu at Mobil is Chief Jolapamo’s very close friend and age mate, as they grew up together working for Mobil. I know Chief Akinyelure, and I find it funny that no one ever said Bola Tinubu is older than Chief Pious Akinyelure. I guess Tinubu’s age issue is part of Politico Nigerians!

Bola Tinubu, Isaac Jolapamo, and Chief Rashidi Ladoja are first-class graduates of reputable Universities. Chief Rashidi Ladoja graduated First Class in Chemical Engineering from the University of Liege in Belgium. Chief Isaac Jolapamo graduated First Class in Mechanical Engineering from Jesus College, Cambridge University. Bola Tinubu graduated Magna Cum Laude (Equivalent of First Class) from Chicago State University in Accounting and Business Administration. All three worked with Mobil at high levels. Bola Tinubu resigned as a Treasurer. Isaac Jolapamo was a Ship Engineer, while Rashidi Ladoja was a Chemical Engineer with Mobil Oil, respectively. He held managerial positions before resigning to venture into Shipping, where he and Jolapamo became household names as leaders in the African Shipping industry.”

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu was one of the most prominent faces of the pro-democracy struggle. He had his face and voice in establishing newspapers and magazines with the sole purpose of fighting the military government. Chief Rashidi Ladoja and Chief Isaac Jolapamo, on the other hand, were heavy funders of the NADECO both at home and abroad. The fact remains that, in 1994, only a few Nigerians were as genuinely and stupendously wealthy as Chief Rashidi Ladoja or Chief Isaac Jolapamo. They both had vessels that sailed African waters and ocean vessels, with offices in many parts of the world. They employed hundreds of people, in their shipping and other business lines. All the money you have, for which people refer to you as their ATM will likely not buy an anchor on one of Rashidi Ladoja’s vessels in 1994. I salute the courage of these two because their business of shipping is in the firm grasp of the Federal Government they were fighting, yet they put the interest of the nation ahead of theirs. Now, that is real courage!

Bola Tinubu, Isaac Jolapamo, and Rashidi Ladoja were all hounded into exile at the same time. Chief Jolapamo and Chief Rashidi Ladoja weren’t too prominent in overt confrontations with the military junta of Abacha, like Tinubu. They worked behind the curtains, simply donating their money, properties, and their first-class brains to the struggle. Everything was fine, or so we thought until Chief Rashidi Ladoja delivered a devastating speech (I believe during his birthday celebration in 1994), lambasted the military government of Abacha by giving the Supreme Military Council, SMC the ultimatum to return leadership to the people or face the consequences. This is someone the military wanted to roast, now he just rubbed oil on his body and played around with an active fire. The outburst was broadcast all over the media outlets as it was being delivered. Even if the military wasn’t sure of his position on the NADECO struggle, he just gave them a clue. They went for him immediately after he was done delivering his speech. But he escaped, under circumstances that could only be described as a miracle. Those of us under Chief Jolapamo only knew they were looking for Chief Jolapamo as well, when on the day after Chief Ladoja’s speech, heavily armed military men surrounded Morlap Shipping, barged into the office shouting, “Where is your Oga patapata!” They repeated this for a few more days in a row; luckily, Chief Jolapamo was nowhere to be found. We knew what happened to Kudirat Abiola, Pa Alfred Rewane, and others under Abacha. You could therefore imagine our fears. We heaved a sigh of relief only after Mr. Matthew Oyebode, Morlap Shipping Administrative Director called everyone some days later and said, “Won o le ri Oga. Baba ati Chief Ladoja ti wa ni exile. Gbogbo yin, e lo man gbadura ki won o de layo. Ekun o ran nkankan. E je a maa dupe.” Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Chief Jolapamo, and Chief Rashidi Ladoja did not return to Nigeria from exile until General Sanni Abacha died in 1998.

In 1999, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu became the Governor of Lagos. Among the first obstacles was the litigation against him and the Lagos State House of Assembly, when Festus Keyamo, now the State Minister of Labour sued to disqualify Tinubu from being sworn in as Governor. Femi Falana and Fred Agbaje were the key attorneys. I worked with Mr. Fred Agbaje and I can boastfully say I did an overwhelming part of the brief under Mr. Fred Agbaje on behalf of the Lagos State House of Assembly. On occasions, Chief Jolapamo would sneak into the Ikeja High Court despite his hectic schedule. On many occasions, he would ask me to update him about the proceedings. After I updated him, he would simply tell me how he followed everything to validate my update to be accurate. He would end our conversation with a stern warning, “So fun Oga re, won o good yo Tinubu o.”

Fast-forward four years after, Chief Ladoja became the Governor of Oyo State. His key huddle was President Obasanjo and the late Chief Lamidi Adedibu. When he was unconstitutionally removed from office, he had succored from Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who himself was at the same time contending with that same President Olusegun Obasanjo. Both survived President Obasanjo’s onslaught. The exception is Chief Isaac Jolapamo, who would not touch politics with a mile-long pole. His only involvement would be when I became involved in active politics, and he had to solicit support for me with everything he has gotten, despite the challenges of age and his otherwise no so rosy perspective about Nigerian politics.

When Bola Tinubu was elected Nigerian President on February 25, 2023. I feel the trio of Chief Isaac Jolapamo, Chief Rashidi Ladoja, and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu have all come to a full cycle in their struggle. As one of the beneficiaries of Chief Jolapamo, I had flashbacks of those days of their struggle and exile, when no one could have predicted they would be blessed to see one of them being sworn in as President of Nigeria a few hours from now. The first person I called to congratulate was Chief Jolapamo and by extension Chief Ladoja. The trio of Tinubu, Jolapamo, and Ladoja will always be valiant heroes to me. Now can breathe a sense of relief, seeing sunshine after those days of darkness in the tunnel. I count them as extremely lucky.

A former Oyo State Governor, Rashidi Ladoja, has said he hopes Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC), presidential candidate for next year’s election, is not treated like the late Chief MKO Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the 1993 presidential election.

Ladoja made this remark shortly after this year’s Eid-el-Kabir prayers at his Bodija, Ibadan country home, Oyo State.

Abiola, who won the June 12 presidential election in 1993, died in prison in July 1998 while struggling to reclaim his mandate from the late military dictator, Sani Abacha.

Ladoja said, “There are many factors involved in electing President. Whoever wants to be president and those working for him have to work very hard.

“In fact, they will need more prayers as they are consulting. With all these efforts, God has the final say on who becomes president. Chief MKO Abiola who was a Muslim was elected along with his vice, a Muslim.

“We only pray that if Tinubu wins, it would not turn out like that of late MKO Chief Abiola. I don’t see anything wrong in a Muslim-Muslim ticket because I don’t intervene in religious matters.

“Muslim and Christians are from the same father. Some people are following Ismal while some are following Isaac which are siblings. So, what is now my own to be fighting for one among them? Even I don’t have time to fight with traditionalists.”

Alli, while reacting in a statement issued by his media aide, Comrade Taiwo Ibarahim, said he had know Ladoja for being a trustworthy person for many decades.

He stated that the discharge of Ladoja by the court has shown that Ladoja ran a transparent government.

He said, “I have known my leader, Ladoja over the decades as one who always stand by the truth and would never do anything to soil his image.

“His victory is another testimony that the government he ran in Oyo state between 2003 and 2007, together with those of us, his lieutenants, was that of the people and for the people alone and this is the more reason he stands out as has been clamouring for good governance in the next dispensation”.

He recalled that his record of putting the people, teachers, civil servants, traders, artisans in the the frontburner of governance has not been rivaled since he left the saddle in 2007 and stressed that as a graduate from his school of political thoughts, he (Ladoja) has reposed that confidence in him to reshape the socio-economic and socio-political system of Oyo State.

Lanlehin, in a statement by his media aide, Damola Adeoye, said, “Senator Ladoja’s integrity has been further advertised, and the orchestrators of the spurious litigation, ostensibly for political motives, put to perpetual shame.

“Senator Lanlehin, therefore, congratulates the Osi Olubadan on this victory over witch hunt, base politics and unfounded allegations, urging him to continue to dedicate his life to the advancement of humanity and promotion of welfarism.”

Makinde, on his part, said that he was relieved to learn that the litigation which lasted over 10 years was finally laid to rest in favour of Senator Ladoja.

According to him, “Ladoja’s comportment throughout the ordeal was a lesson in resilience which the younger ones must learn from.”

Makinde said that Senator Ladoja must now make himself father of all and stand by what will bring maximum progress to a people he once governed.

A Director in the Oyo State Civil Service, Mr. Yinka Fatoki, on Tuesday testified for the prosecution in the ongoing trial of N4.7bn money laundering charge against a former governor of Oyo State, Rasheed Ladoja.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is prosecuting Ladoja and a former Commissioner for Finance, Waheed Akanbi.

Ladoja and Akanbi had, on December 14, 2016, pleaded not guilty to an eight-count charge bordering on money laundering before Justice Mohammed Idris of a Federal High Court, Lagos, and were granted bails.

The EFCC prosecutor, Mr. Oluwafemi Olabisi, was present in court; while Mr. Bolaji Onilenla and Mr. Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika represented Ladoja and Akanbi respectively.

At the resumed trial on Tuesday, the prosecution witness, Fatoki, told the court he was the Executive Secretary of the Bureau of Investment and Public Private Partnership in Oyo State.

Olabisi: Where were you in 2007?

Witness: As at 2007, I was an acting Director of Investment Promotion in the Ministry of Commerce, Oyo State; and as at that time, the desk officer in charge of state government investment holdings of public quoted securities.

Olabisi: Do you know Fountain Securities Ltd ?

Witness: Fountain Securities Ltd was the appointed portfolio manager for the sale of the Oyo State Government shares in 2007.

We gave a mandate for them to sell the shares, there was no pricing on the mandate, but that they should sell in line with best practices and within a time frame.

When Fountain Securities reported that the shares were sold at a discounted rate, Oyo State Government enlisted GTI Capital Ltd to investigate.

A petition was written by the state executive council to EFCC upon receipt of the investigation report, I was also named in the petition.

During cross-examination, counsel to the first defendant, Mr. Bolaji Onilenla, asked the witness if he was aware of any meeting with the stock brokers to finalise the sale of the shares.

The witness told the court that he had no such knowledge of any meeting.

Onilenla: Are you aware that the state government had an investigation into the sale of the shares?

Witness: The report GTI Capital Ltd sent to the state government after their investigation confirmed that the sales of the shares were done in line with market rules and practices.

In his cross-examination, Olumide-Fusika asked: Did you receive any payment from Fountain Securities?

Witness: I received payment from Fountain Securities Ltd, but it was not payment for the sale of the shares but for the dividends collected on them.

Fatoki further told the court that he gave the money to the commissioner who further disbursed it.

Olumide-Fusika: How was the payment made?

Witness: Payment was made in tranches and not in lump sum.

At the close of cross-examination, Olabisi told the court that the prosecutions’ next witness resides in Ibadan, and that he would need a few days to produce him.

He urged the court to vacate Wednesday’s earlier set-down date and grant the prosecution a further date to produce other witnesses.

Justice Mohammed Idris adjourned the case until April 12 and 13 for continuation of trial.

The defendants are alleged to have conspired, siphoned and laundered N4.7bn from the coffers of Oyo State.

EFCC is also accusing the defendants of converting N1.9bn belonging to the state to personal use, using the account of a company — Heritage Apartments Ltd — to commit the crime.

It claimed that they retained the money sometime in 2007 in spite of their knowledge that it was proceeds from a criminal activity.

Ladoja was accused of removing 600,000 pounds sterling from the state coffers in 2007, which he allegedly sent to Bimpe Ladoja, his daughter, who was in London at the time.

In addition, the ex-governor was also accused of converting N42m belonging to the state to his personal use and subsequently used same to purchase an armoured Land Cruiser jeep.

Ladoja also allegedly converted N728m and another N77m at different times in 2007 to his personal use and transferred the money to Bistrum Investments to purchase a property in Ibadan on his behalf.

The offences contravened sections 14, 16, 17 (a) and 18 (1) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2004. (NAN)

The Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday directed Oyo State Government to send one of its officials to tender a document in the trial of former Governor Rashidi Ladoja.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) re-arraigned Ladoja for allegedly converting N4.7billion from the state treasury to his personal use.

He was charged alongside one Waheed Akanbi on eight -count charge of money laundering and unlawful conversion of public funds.

Justice Mohammed Idris adjourned at the instance of Akanbi’s lawyer, Mr. Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN), who requested that an Oyo State government official should be summoned by the court to tender some documents as exhibits.

According to him, a document supplied to the court by the Oyo State Government, was crucial to his client’s defence.

He urged the court to summon the official to appear in court for the purpose of properly tendering the document as an exhibit.

Ladoja’s lawyer, Mr. Bolaji Onilenla, did not oppose the application for adjournment.

Ladoja was Oyo State governor from May 29, 2003 to January 12, 2006 when he was impeached.

The Appeal Court sitting in Ibadan on November 1, 2006 declared the impeachment illegal.

The Supreme Court upheld the decision on November 11, 2006, and Ladoja resumed office on December 12, 2006.

He, however, lost a re-election bid in 2007.

Justice Idris adjourned the case till Monday when the official is expected to appear in court.
