The Supreme Court has dismissed the appeal filed by Aminu Sule Lamido, son of former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, challenging his conviction for failure to declare $40,000 at an airport.
In a unanimous judgment, the apex court held that the appeal lacked merit and affirmed the decisions of the trial court and the Court of Appeal.

Aminu was arrested on December 11, 2012, by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport while preparing to travel to Cairo, Egypt.

The prosecution told the court that he declared $10,000 to the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) but was found in possession of an additional $40,000, which was not disclosed on his currency declaration form.

He was subsequently charged before the Federal High Court in Kano on a one-count charge of false declaration of foreign currency, contrary to the provisions of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act.

On July 12, 2015, the trial court convicted him and ordered the forfeiture of 25 per cent of the undeclared sum to the Federal Government.

Dissatisfied with the ruling, Aminu approached the Court of Appeal, Kaduna Division, seeking to set aside the conviction and the forfeiture order.

However, in a judgment delivered on December 7, 2015, the appellate court dismissed the appeal, a decision now upheld by the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has ordered that the trial of former Governor Sule Lamido, his two sons and others over alleged ₦1.35 billion fraud should continue before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

A five-member panel of the apex court gave the directive in two unanimous judgments delivered in appeals filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The apex court upheld the ruling of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which dismissed the no-case submissions filed by the defendants and held that they had a case to answer.

The appeals were against the July 25, 2023 judgments of the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, which upheld the no-case submissions by Lamido and others and struck out the 37-count charge on the grounds that the Federal High Court lacked jurisdiction to hear the case.
In the lead judgment, Justice Abubakar Umar set aside the Court of Appeal’s decision and affirmed the earlier ruling of Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which overruled the no-case submissions and ordered the defendants to enter their defence.

The EFCC alleged that Lamido, while serving as governor between 2007 and 2015, abused his office by laundering funds allegedly received as kickbacks from companies awarded contracts by the Jigawa State Government.

Those charged alongside him are his sons, Aminu and Mustapha Lamido; Aminu Wada Abubakar; and their companies, Bamaina Holdings Limited and Speeds International Limited.

On Thursday, a group of hoodlums launched a violent attack on the State Secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Dutse, the capital of Jigawa State.

The assailants set fire to vehicles parked at the premises, causing significant damage.

In the Hadejia area of Jigawa, the #EndBadGovernance protests also turned violent, with demonstrators clashing with security forces.

Protesters who marched to the Government House in the state capital were forcibly dispersed by security agents.

The unrest extended to neighbouring Kano State, where hoodlums exploited the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests to set ablaze vehicles parked at the State High Court.

Also, the newly built Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) Industrial Park in Kano was looted on the first day of the protests.

The protests, which began on Thursday in response to economic hardship, have rapidly escalated in both Kano and Jigawa States, part of the North-West geopolitical zone.

In response to the unrest, Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has declared a 24-hour curfew to restore order.

Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi has suspended Aminu Kanta from his position as Commissioner of the Ministry of Commerce.

The suspension comes in the wake of allegations surrounding the mismanagement of funds allocated to the Iftar feeding programme in Babura Local Government Area.

In a statement released by the Secretary to the State Government, Bala Ibrahim, the suspension was described as a necessary step to uphold transparency and integrity in governance.

The government emphasised its commitment to thoroughly investigating any claims of financial impropriety.

Governor Namadi’s directive to suspend Kanta was conveyed via a letter delivered by Ibrahim, with the suspension taking immediate effect.

This move underscores the seriousness with which the government is addressing the issue.

The Iftar feeding programme, designed to provide meals during Ramadan across the state’s 27 local government areas, received an allocation of N2.8 billion from the State Executive Council. The programme aimed to establish 600 centers, with a minimum of two feeding points in every political ward, along with designated centers in higher institutions across the state.

Each centre was expected to serve a minimum of 300 people daily throughout Ramadan.

Allegations of Kanta’s involvement in the mismanagement of funds designated for this programme have prompted swift action from the state government, signaling a zero-tolerance approach to corruption and financial malpractice.

In response to the suspension, Governor Namadi reiterated his administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability in governance.

He assured the public that thorough investigations would be conducted to uncover any wrongdoing and ensure that public funds are utilised for their intended purposes.

KANO State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has consented to the marriage proposal between his daughter Fatima Umar Ganduje and Idris Ajimobi, the son of Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state.

The marriage proposal was contracted on Friday at the palace of the Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II who gave the father’s consent to the proposed union.

No fewer than 12 serving governors attended the event including governor Akinwumi Ambode of Lagos state, Rauf Aregbesola of Osun state, Rotimi Akeredolu Ondo state as well as Adulfatah Ahmad of Kwara state.

Others are Bello Masari of Katsina state, Mohammed Abubakar Badaru Jigawa, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal Sokoko, Abdal’aziz Abubakar Yari of Zamfara state as well as the governor of Borno state Kashim Shettima among others.

The Emir of Kano who consented to the proposal on behalf of Governor Ganduje described the union as a way to cementing relationships as well as destroying stereotypes between south and northern Nigeria.

Citing from the Quran and Hadith, the Emir stated that tribalism and ethnicity that have being dividing factors in the country have no place in Islam.
He commended Governors Ganduje and Ajomobi for leading a good example for the people to follow for peaceful co-existence in the country.

‘’I am pleased that two leaders of this country at a time when this country is most at need of example, at a time when this country is most in need of reminders that we are all Nigerians, we are part of one common humanity descended from one man and one woman, made from the same earth decided to apply this teaching to show an example to all of us.

‘’The prophet of Allah said there is no supremacy for the Arab over the non Arab, or the non Arab over the Arab. No superiority for the light skinned over the black skinned or black skinned over the white skinned all of you are from Adam and Adam is from the earth.

The reason I quote this Hadith is to remind all of us that tribalism, racism and all these ‘’isms’’ that are based on ethnicity have no place in Islam.

‘’Marriages are unions especially when they come from prominent families. They are not just unions between boy and girl or man and woman, they are unions of people, they cement relationships, they improve understanding, they breed love and respect, they destroy stereotypes’’ Emir Sanusi emphasized.

Speaking on behalf of Ajimobi family governor Rauf Aregbesola thanked the Emir of Kano and Governor Ganduje for approving the proposal assuring that the union would be taken beyond mere union between two families.

‘’We expressed our sincere gratitude for the magnanimity, consideration and huge leadership you have displayed today in first admonishing us about the essence of this particular gathering that is beyond mere gathering between two families. This is a pointer to the need for our nation to struggle and retrieve that which we had carelessly lost over the years.

‘’The assurance I want to give on behalf of my brother from Ibadan is that we will take this beyond mere union between two families. We appreciate the need for us to work very hard for the unity, for the harmony between our peoples’’ he concluded.
