What happened to our traditional rulers on Friday, 15th September 2023 at the commissioning of Iseyin campus of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology is not the worst thing to happen to traditional institution in Nigeria. It’s not going to be the last worst thing that will happen to them.

But because Nigerians are so emotional and our approach to solving problems is always awkward, which defines the true state of our nation or how could you explain a very poor country like Togo having regular supply of electricity and as rich as we are, all the amounts of electricity we could generate in more than 60 years of our independence is less than 6000 megawatts?

Is it not funny that we are among the largest producers of crude oil in the world, yet to get refined products to run our machinery, we need to change our naira to dollar and buy back from the people we sell our crude to, and it is not illegal to refine crude in Nigeria?

The Nigerian traditional institution collapsed when the British took the authority from the original custodian of authority and gives it to anybody who can learn their ways of life and rule us according to their colonial laws, which they made supreme over us.

The British, after the conquest knows that to keep any conquered territory, you must disconnect the people from their God, less their God answer their prayers and give back their land to them.
And because they also knew that our traditional institution is the link between us and our God they made sure that the institution (which housed our culture, traditions, religion, and science) is the least in the tiers of the new government they handed to us.

The elites who took over from the British colonialists, under this extended colonial rules which we call independence, also, knowing the potency of our traditional institution, make sure that the institution remains under check for possible awakening. They placed them at the bottom of the local government authority.

We pretended as if we didn’t know that the Staff of Office in their hands and even thier Crowns are no longer traditional but instruments given to them by the state, and statutorily they must be responsible, answerable and pay homage to the state, the custodian of the authority.

They are no longer the representatives of God or Alase Ekeji Orisa who cannot be questioned (Kabiesi). They now answer queries from even ordinary local government chairman.

Have we forgotten in the recent history when the Kogi State Government asked the paramount traditional ruler, Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, Dr. Ado Ibrahim to write a letter stating why disciplinary actions should not be taken against him for failing to recieve the Governor and the President visiting his kingdom?

I have read several articles and posts where some people are saying that what happened in Sean cannot happen in their domain, that is not true. It can happen anywhere, and, of course it has happened everywhere before.

From Alaafin of Oyo to the Ooni of Ife, the Sultan of Sokoto, the Alake of Egba land and the Emir of Kano, they have all received their share of humiliation as enshrined in our constitution.

So, what Baba Obasanjo did in Iseyin was simply upholding the Nigerian constitution, but we will still hang him. When we are done hanging him, don’t we need to ask ourselves this fundamental question: Will that stop further humiliation of our traditional stools?

The British have done very well for themselves, their traditional rulers don’t answer to the Prime Minister or the British Parliament. They are answerable to their gods, but deliberately they made ours answerable to the authority of men.

As an advocate for the restoration of African values and culture and a direct recipient of what happened in Iseyin, because I was there and the traditional ruler of my hometown, the Onjo of Okeho was also there. I think it’s time we changed our laws towards our traditional institution.

If we are furious, let us use the energy and the venom we are using to castigate Obasanjo to call for a change in our constitution and make our traditional institution truly traditional.

When they become truly traditional, what Obasanjo did will become a sacrilege, and he won’t be able to make it home safely that night.

Researchers working on the Global Affairs Canada landscape analysis on sexual and gender-based violence in Oyo state have found high rate of rape in Iseyin and Ogbomoso communities.

The team of experts which has Oyo State Coordinator for the UNFPA-GAC survey, Dr Adebimpe Adenugba, the Gender Reproductive Health Analyst of UNFPA, Dr Esther Somefun, Drs O.B Babalola, O.K Oyelade and Usman Ojedokun reported that drugs and alcohol consumption contribute to gender based violence in rural and rural-urban communities of the state than in urban areas.

According to them, women in interior communities of Oyo State suffer high level of rape, assault, abuse among other vices.

These were part of a preliminary report submitted to the Oyo state Ministry of Health at the Exit/Validation meeting with stakeholders on Global Affairs Canada Landscape Analysis on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, Harmful Traditional Practices and Obstetrics Fistula in the state.

Funded by Global Affairs Canada, the research was executed by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Sokoto, Bauchi and Oyo States.

Although the GAC LGAs in the state are Ogbomosho West, Oyo South, Ibadan North, Kajola and Ibarapa North West the UNFPA-GAC survey was carried out in 11 council areas including: Saki East, Itesiwaju, Iseyin, Surulere and Iwajowa.

Others are: Afijio, Ibadan North, Ibadan South West, Oluyole, Egbeda and Ibadan North East.

State Coordinator for the UNFPA-GAC survey, Dr Adebimpe Adenugba disclosed that women reported not enjoying any form of rights noting that women reported that their men were not living up to family responsibilities.

She noted that women still continue to face harmful traditional practices

Adenugba also noted that drug and alcoholism were discovered to be in high use which often times lead to the abuse of the women and girls child.

Speaking on the issue of rape in the affected communities, the Gender Reproductive Health Analyst of UNFPA, Dr Esther Somefun said “Yes, they said rape is consistent and is common. Apart from husband raping their wives, there is also child rape, adult rape and elderly rape. They said the children especially are vulnerable because during a period like this with high rate of poverty, they had to send their children hawking, so child labour causes rape. So there’s high rate of rape in Iseyin and Ogbomosho communities”

Somefun who also doubles as the Oyo state program officer for GAC project noted that the purpose of the study was to find out the harmful traditional practices and the rate of Gender Based Violence (GBV) in Oyo State as there is no exclusive data on GBV in Oyo State and country in general, adding that the effort will go a long way in making data available for researchers in subsequent efforts.

“In the immediate, in Oyo State, the VAPP law is in place but is yet to be implemented by the court, and its prohibition acts on all persons. So if that law can be implemented immediately, there will be a solution and also we want the government to sensitize the community.

“Where we reported, it seems these SGBVs are dying down more in the urban than in the rural. But there is still some part of the urban that’s still experiencing it. Where we call the rural-urban like the Beere, Foko side are still experiencing it, but when we talk about the urban, it seems to have gone down a bit.

“But when government sensitize, let the police do their work, they should not kill cases. They report cases in police stations yet some people ensure it dies down.

“Religion has a lot to do with this. Religion and cultural practices have been a cover for SGBV. People we spoke to said even some religious leaders also perpetrate this evil. And they use religion to cover a lot of things. So I think religion is the major factor because of this culture of silence and stigma.”

They then called for more sensitisation and enlightenment of the people especially, the male folks in the communities so as to help more women live dignified lives.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Oyo state Ministry of Health, Dr Adebisi Ayoola assures that the government will look into the preliminary report and take immediate measures to address the challenges before the final report would be submitted.

Oyo state government has been urged to facilitate the immediate and prompt implementation of the Violence Against People Prohibition (VAPP) law as a way of safeguarding women against endemic ill treatment especially in the core rural areas.

Born on November 27, 1976, Olanrewaju Fasasi popularly known as Sound Sultan (SS) died on July 11, 2021 after succumbing to throat cancer in United States of America. He left the world at a time that Nigeria is experiencing one of his predicted outcomes of callous leadership. Sound Sultan is a social crusader who deploys his songs to interrogate societal problems of migration, poor leadership, corruption, problem of accountability, injustices and their consequences on individuals and Nigeria.

Death is a social fact which every mortal must experience but our contributions (to social order or disorder) will outlive us and either locate us in the trash can of irrelevance or elevate us among social engineers who used their talents to fight for justice, peace, and social progress. Olanrewaju Omo Fasasi may have joined his ancestors but his songs will continue to speak about the monstrous problems which face motherland as he loves to call Nigeria.

Through his works, he diagnosed Nigeria’s problems and proffered solutions to them but such interventions do not matter to callous leadership structure. The hunters (parasitic leadership) failed to heed SS’s philosophic submission that a day will come when the bushmeat will turn around to catch the hunters. Today, Sound Sultan leaves motherland at the time the bushmeat (uncared for children of the masses pushed to the margins of the society by their callous political, religious and parasitic elite) is hunting their hunters. It is now crystal clear that the crumbling sky is not one man’s problem as fear of insecurity covers the land and criminals have partitioned and restructured the country along criminal enclaves. Indeed, the insignificant and uneducated bandits cum terrorists and their kidnapping comrades have become major factors driving policies in President Muhammadu Buhari’s Nigeria. The idiocy of successive handlers of Nigeria is shaking the country’s faulty foundation. In this tribute piece, I use three of SS songs which interrogate personal troubles and social problems in Nigeria.

In his hit song, Mathematics, SS in the year 2000 depicted Nigeria as Jagbajantis facing problems capable of consuming it. He argues that just as BODMAS (Bracket of Division, Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction) was put forward to solve mathematical problems, BODMAS can also be used by sensitive leaders to solve Nigeria’s problems. As a trained sociologist, I am not oblivious of the difficultly in being objective in human affairs. This is why the display of clannish affinity through body language, policy formulation and implementation of the ‘converted democrat’ is tearing the country apart. SS says, ‘Oyinbo say, na BODMAS we go use take solve mathematics, oya carry biro’. Brotherhood, Objectivity, Democracy, Modification, Accountability and Solidarity are suggested solutions to Nigeria’s problems. Pretentious oneness, ethnicised governance, and regional solidarity have become the order of the day while favouritism, modified autocracy, ‘shrouded’ accountability and fostered discord have become the norm.

The problem of insecurity has made many Nigerians to continue to explore opportunities abroad and government is rallying them for remittances. This brain drain gained momentum during military misadventure over Nigeria. In his Classic, Motherland, SS showed his undying love for Nigeria’s development. He advised those who have travelled abroad to remember motherland. He reminds them not to forget the investment of those they left behind who contributed to their emigration. Olanrewaju calls on immigrants to return home if they are facing difficulty abroad because ‘ajo o da bi ile, no matter where u go make you try come back area oooo’.

In this song, SS showed how group support facilitates transnational migration but like Nigeria’s politicians who forgets electoral promises once they get to office, these migrants forget their benefactors who sold properties to send them to obodo oyinbo. SS documents marriage-for-green-card tragedy which makes women promised marriage by their boyfriends who travelled get jilted while these boyfriends end up marrying citizens as a strategy to obtain citizenship/stay. Apparently seeing that as betrayal of trust, SS says ‘Hilary wey u been promise to marry, still de wait, o boy she don tarry….you marry oyinbo for another nation, use mago mago get dough…now you oyinbo wife don know, next thing u know, she don go report u…..I wish say, I fit reach you anywhere you dey eeeee’.

In his collaborative work with Tuface Idia in the song, Bushmeat, SS metaphorically frames Nigerian leaders as the hunter and the children of the masses who are denied quality education, the almajirai kids who are children of the poor but dubiously pushed to the streets while the children of the rich don’t do such practice, the unemployed children of the poor and those who are victims of corruption of the privileged few as the bushmeat.

He envisions a time when the bushmeat will turn back at their tormentors and begin to hunt them. He observes that Nigeria is run by cliques and cabals who steal common patrimony while the masses lack electricity and water among other social amenities. While the roads are bad, SS fumes that the parasitic leadership fly in the sky. Flying in this sense also shows how far they are from the realities on ground. To this iconic musician, despite suffering neglect and hunger, the children of the masses maintained their sanity until the time they decided to catch their hunters and fight back against the system that brought out the beast in them.

Hear Sound Sultan in Bushmeat: “see one day bushmeat go catch the hunter, one day bushmeat go catch the hunter…see them flying for dem aeroplane, on top all the pains my people dey maintain, I don tire to dey explain, pikin wey never chop sef dey complain, water and light na yawa, yawa, everywhere just dark no power, the only pawa wey dem get na aim dem dey take dey oppress ooooo, what could be the answer, it could have been we don’t matter to them because dem chop your money, my money every other person money, e ba mi ki gbe Ole…Ole…Ole….Barawo! dem dem na aim my pipu sabi, dem dem everything na padi padi, everybody must know somebody to grow oooo….e bami kigbe Ole!”

The State of affairs in Nigeria is one in which bushmeat in the form of bandits, terrorists, ethnic militia, kidnappers are hunting their hunters and not sparing of those who voted irresponsible leadership. To the bushmeat, the hunters are both those who hold the levers of power and those who sustain their terror reigns through voting and those who sold their future for temporal gratification in the form of stomach infrastructure.

SS leaves behind a country where you can steal, kidnap, abduct, and face no State clampdown as long as you do not say you want to break away from Nigeria or pursue self determination. In fact, bandits and kidnappers who not only kill hapless citizens and security agencies but live on ransom economy have been elevated to executive status with defined territories such that residents and farmers have to pay to get security because the state has not shown capacity to secure her people from national and transnational criminals. Sad enough, bandits strapping A-47 around their neck, now take pictures with government functionaries and associates of clannish comrade.

However, the victims criminal herdsmen and tribal bandits in southern Nigeria dare not defend themselves, rather; they are being coerced to stomach injustices and sacrifice their lives to keep Nigeria one. This is the sociology of restructuring and self-determination agitations.

To sum up, Sound Sultan speaks truth to power through his songs characterising Nigeria as a jungle under the control of cheaters, hyenas and the greedy. Olanrewaju was not given to singing anti-social songs to reach stardom; he was in a class of his own as a master musician and social crusader. Journey well and remember motherland…Naija Ninja, Olanrewaju Fasasi, Iseyin Oro omo ebedi.

•asks residents to take precautionary measures seriously

The Oyo State Government, on Wednesday, urged residents of the state, especially those in flood-prone local government areas, to take precautionary measures in respect of the flood alert from the administration.

The state government, which spoke through the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Mrs Olubamiwo Adeosun, stated that every necessary step must be taken to avoid disaster.

According to her, to forestall flooding and its attendant effects, residents of the state, especially those in Ona Ara, Lagelu, Oyo East, Kajola, Egbeda, Ogbomoso South, Iseyin, Ibarapa North, Ibadan South-West, Ibadan North-West and Ibadan South-East Local Government Areas, are required to clear surrounding and street drain channels and avoid dumping wastes improperly.

“It is even of paramount importance that our people should take necessary precautions during heavy rainfall or in the event of flooding. People living in houses built along floodplains should relocate to safer places, avoid the use of low bridges and culverts when the rain is persistent, and whenever there is rainfall, people should avoid staying under high tension electricity installations,”she said.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, quoted the SSG as adding that residents must also ensure “that each household keeps a dustbin and patronizes government-approved waste disposal contractors, avoid building on floodplains, obtain building approvals from relevant statutory bodies before commencing building, among others.”

Mrs. Adeosun stated that as part of efforts to put an end to the menace of flooding in the state, the government has given its full backing to the total implementation of the Ibadan Urban Flood Management Project, ( IUFMP), the state-owned flood risk mitigation project with funding and technical assistance from the World Bank.

She noted that the project has constructed ultramodern hydraulic structures at 17 locations in Ibadan as well as construction of extensive drains/adjoining roads to the structures, adding that the rehabilitation of the 78-year-old Eleyele Dam recently commissioned by the governor is also part of the efforts to contain flooding.

According to the SSG, the warning alert became imperative following the Annual Flood Outlook (AFO) and Seasonal Rainfall Predictions (SRP) released by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) respectively, which, she said, signposted the state among those prone to some extent of flooding in 2020.

She said: “Earlier this year, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had released their Annual Flood Outlook (AFO) and Seasonal Rainfall Predictions (SRP) respectively, both of which pinpointed Oyo State among the states that are prone to some extent of flooding in the Year 2020. The reports went further to outline the specific local government areas likely to experience flooding, which in the case of Oyo State include Ona Ara, Lagelu, Oyo East, Kajola, Egbeda, Ogbomoso South, Iseyin, Ibarapa North, Ibadan South-West, Ibadan North-West, and Ibadan South-East.

“More recently in June 2020, a follow-up correspondence was done to the Office of His Excellency by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), charging our state to intensify its flood risk mitigating measures ahead of the predicted heavy downpours.

“The vulnerability of Ibadan and some other towns in Oyo State to river and urban flooding is induced by our towns’ topographic terrain; the problem of indiscriminate waste disposal and building of houses on flood plains.

“There is the tendency that the foregoing could even be aggravated by the universal menace of global warming and climate change.

“It is in the light of this that the government of the day in Oyo State has given its full backing to the full implementation of the Ibadan Urban Flood Management Project, the state-owned flood risk mitigation project with funding and technical assistance from the World Bank.

“Under this Project, the highly capacious ultramodern hydraulic structures constructed at 17 different locations of the Ibadan Metropolis, complemented by the extensive drains and approach/adjoining roads to them, are already completed and functional, thus helping to rid those hitherto flood-ravaged areas of incessant flooding and the attendant calamities that came in its wake.

“On a larger scale, processing of the proposed channelization of major rivers and water channels in Ibadan under the IUFMP scheme, is at an advanced stage, with some of the works already awarded to reputable contractors. This implies that major water courses in Ibadan like Ona, Ogbere, Orogun, Kudeti, Agodi Channel, etc. will soon undergo major channelization which, when completed, would boost the runoff draining capacity of the city.

“Beyond the massive hydraulic interventions listed above, the Oyo State Government has revved up the machinery of averting the predicted flooding across all the cities, towns and villages of Oyo State. As we speak, a comprehensive Radio and Television campaign is running on some major channels in the state, the thrust of which message is to enjoin our people to clear neighbourhood drains, avoid improper waste dumping, shun building on waterways, move out of flood-prone areas, avoid wading into flooded spots, etc.

“Also, earlier today, a Multi Stakeholders’ Meeting was held in this same location to galvanize stakeholders from some of the identified LGAs, LCDAs, Communities, as well as relevant MDAs and other regulatory agencies on their roles and responsibilities towards this new charge. That way, we will be able to present a common front and jointly avert another crisis within a pandemic.

“May I now use the opportunity presented by this forum to charge our people, both individually and collectively, to take the flood advisories to heart and commit wholeheartedly to their messages. We are required now, more than ever before, to clear our surrounding and street drain channels, avoid dumping wastes improperly, ensure that each household keeps a dustbin and patronizes government-approved waste disposal contractors, avoid building on floodplains, obtain building approvals from relevant statutory bodies before commencing building, among others.

“It is even of paramount importance that our people should take necessary precautions during heavy rainfall or in the event of flooding. People living in houses built along floodplains should relocate to safer places, avoid the use of low bridges and culverts when the rain is persistent, and whenever there is rainfall, people should avoid staying under high tension electricity installations.

“As a responsible government, the Engr. Seyi Makinde administration cares about the safety of the lives and property of our citizens and would not want them to suffer avoidable losses.”

The government called on all media houses in the state, which it noted are critical stakeholders and co-partners for development, to make dissemination of warning messages on flooding part of their daily routine, to safeguard the state from calamities, saying “the situation at hand demands our proactive response and collaborative effort.”

A socio-political interest group under the aegis of Ebedi Frontliners, Iseyin (EFI), has called on Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state to intervene in what they termed ‘a brewing religious crisis’ in Iseyin town before it result to killings and vandalization of properties.

The group made this call in a letter sent to the governor and made available to journalists on Monday, referring to a court summon in which Aseyin of Iseyin, Oba Ganiy Adekunle Oloogunebi (Ajinese 1), the traditional council of Iseyin local government and the leader of Oro sect in Iseyin were respondents.

In the summon, as contained in the letter, the Islamic group was seeking an injunction to stop the celebration of Oro Festival which had been billed for 22nd, September 2019.

Iseyin community has been known with the celebration of the Oro festival among other traditional celebrations, but during the Oro festival, women were not to be seen in the public to avoid seeing the Oro masquerade.

The Publicity Director of the group, Alhaji Segun Fasasi further disclosed that the Islamic sect went to court to seek injunction to stop the celebration of Oro festival, averring that the move was an attempt to create crisis in the peaceful community.

Members of Ebedi Frontliners, however urged Governor Makinde to look into the case and put all security agencies on the alert to avert possible breakdown of law and order by those they described as intolerant of other people’s religion.

“Our attention was called to a brewing religious crisis in Iseyin community recently as an Islamic religious sect was said to have approached a court in Ibadan, the State capital to get an injunction for the purpose of preventing the adherents of Oro to celebrate their annual Oro festival.

“Sir, we heard this action was premised on the fact that the Oro traditional worshippers have picked 22nd of September as the day that was sanctioned by the Royal father, Oba (Dr.) Abd-Ganiy Adekunle Oloogunebi (Ajinese 1), Aseyin of Iseyin and other stakeholders, regarding security issues.

“We write as a socio-political organization that believes in peace as a pre-requisite for growth and social development and as well share the lofty idea that Your Excellency’s administration holds high and sacred so that Oyo State will not go back to the days of the dark.

“It is a known fact that Nigeria is a secular State and allows for freedom of religion, but in the years past, the people of the community have witnessed violent attacks by some religious zealots who claimed to be fighting for Islam against the Oro worshipers, resulting in loss of lives and valuable properties.

“We will be happy if your administration makes haste to pre-empt any plan to cause havoc in the community, which may lead to loss of lives and destruction of properties as our people have been enjoying relative peace since the emergence of your administration,” Fasasi said.

The group, thereafter pledged its loyalty to the progress of the State.

Having realized that no government can shoulder the responsibilities of an important sector such as education alone, it is believed that the timely clarion call made by the State government to all the stake holders was borne out of the urgent need to restore, transform and reposition Oyo state to its glorious years. This, encouraged the birth of Oyo Education Trust Fund (ETF) which was officially launched almost 2 years ago, precisely, on the 21st of November, 2017 at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.

A gubernatorial aspirant in the forthcoming 2019 general elections on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Dr. Olusola Ayandele, has described the vast agriculture potential of the state as a goldmine needed to be fully tapped by government and private investors in the quest to banish hunger, poverty and under-development from the society.

Dr. Ayandele stated this on Tuesday during a courtesy call on the Aseyin of Iseyin, Oba AbdulGaniyu Adekunle Salau (Oloogunebi Ajinese 1). The visit was in furtherance of the Ibarapa-born politician’s consultation with traditional rulers and other stakeholders over his ambition to succeed Senator Abiola Ajimobi in office as the governor on May 29, 2019.

https://iso.keq.mybluehost.me/oyo-over-700000-pvcs-not-yet-collected-inec/

According to him, “With vast arable land, favourable climate and manpower which we can boast of, particularly in Oke-Ogun and other parts of the state, the future looks very good for us in the Pacesetters State. Agriculture remains the largest employer of labour in the global arena and all we need to do is to come up with right policy direction, facilitate mechanization and encourage citizens’ participation.

“I use this opportunity to re-emphasize my determination to work assiduously towards developing every part of the state without any discrimination if given the chance to emerge as the next governor. The job would be a lot easier for us because the current governor has laid the foundation.” Ayandele added.

Reacting, the monarch, Oba AbdulGaniyu Salau expressed his delight over the quality of aspirants jostling to succeed Governor Ajimobi. “Oke-Ogun and Ibarapa people have got a good chance this time to produce governor for the state going by the quality of people like you (Dr. Ayandele) who are now showing interest with great promise.

“I am particularly impressed by your record of service and achievements as well as the burning passion in you. “Therefore, I pray for your success and I urge you to be faithful to the people of the state if you eventually got the chance to govern the state as desired”, the custodian of culture said.

Dr. Ayandele later met with elders and chieftains of the APC in Iseyin/ Kajola/Iwajowa/ Itesiwaju Federal Constituency at the Trans Motel, Iseyin and in attendance were; Chief J. A Adeleke, Elder Amos Aderounmu, Alh. Kolawole Alowonle, Alh. Mufutau Alobo and Alh. Sikiru Osuolale.

Those on the entourage of the APC gubernatorial hopeful included; Dr. Olayinka Ayandele (his wife), Hon. Ademola Ojo, Hon. Gbemileke Olawore, Hon. Adetunji Omolewu, Chief Mrs Aderinsola Soname, Hon. Akeem Olayinka Taiwo as well as scores of party faithful and supporters.
