Sequel to the mixed reactions that trailed his declaration about the age-long relationship between the Yoruba natives and the Igbo people of South Eastern Nigeria, Ooni of Ife & Arole Oduduwa, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II has charged historians to deepen their research on African history.

The Spiritual leader of Yoruba race worldwide made the call on Wednesday while playing host to a prominent Igbo monarch, His Majesty, Eze Chukwuemeka Eri, Ezeora 34th, Aka Ji Ovo Igbo, Enugwu Aguleri, Anambra State.

Ooni Ogunwusi who is the Co-chairman of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria explained that the Igbo people of South Eastern Nigeria globally known for economic prowess have identical culture with their Yoruba counterpart in the South Western part of the country.

The African foremost monarch frowned at the frictions between ethnic divisions across Africa saying unity is needed for the required progress in the continent.

“Africa must unite for peace and progress across board, I am sure that if Igbo people and their Yoruba brothers come together, Africa will unite.

“I am so happy to receive you all and I must say that today is one of my happiest moments on this throne I feel proud of you on your achievements within the last 42 years of reign on the throne of your ancestors.

“I have been having sleepless night because my ancestors have been visiting me that black race must unite. This coincided with my mandate of peace and unity that I have preached around the globe. No race should be left behind” Ooni said.

“Your Eri kingdom is one of the oldest kingdoms in Igboland We Yoruba have strong ties with Igbos because no Igbo man can do without kolanut which only grows in Yorubaland, we must therefore relate together as members of the dame family, this is the best way we can enjoy lasting peaceful coexistence as Nigerians.

“Ile-Ife is your home and you are always welcome. We in Ife are only the custodians of the great family worldwide because all the citizens of the world migrated from Ife.” Ooni added

Earlier in his speech titled “Royal Handshake Across The Niger”, Eze Chukwuemeka Eri appreciated the roles played by Ooni by open fore the relationship between the Yoruba and Igbos and that the Igbos being the progenitor of Israel. He urged him not to rest on his oars till unity is achieved by all races in Africa

The Igbo monarch, accompanied by the Onu-Oja II of Owelle Kingdom, Igwe Anthony Onyekwere revealed that his visit was necessitated by the Ooni’s comments during the last Aje Festival celebration, especially on the relationship between Igbos and Yorubas, imploring the historians from both sides to dig deep and cement the relationship between the two tribes.

“Thank you Your imperial Majesty, we have been projecting this historical dimension, though not using your platform and since you have echoed same from different angle, there seems to be some kind of historical treasure hidden somewhere about the relationship between Yoruba and Igbos.”

“One of the best ways to unravel this mystery is to encourage inter ethnical visits especially during cultural activities.” Eze Chukwuemeka said

The prominent Igbo monarch however used the medium to invite Ooni to the forthcoming Eri festival scheduled for November 8th & 9th 2019, in Aguleri, Anambra State.

Also Speaking with newsmen, The Eze Ndigbo of Ife, Ezekiel Onyejekwe said the visit is a historic home coming for the visiting Igbo monarchs, saying the Ndigbo will fully support the Ooni of Ife in his peace and unity mission irrespective of the hues and cries by the uninformed mischief makers who are mere attention seekers.

A former Minister of Information, Prince Tony Momoh, has wondered why Nigerians don’t address the Igbos as armed robbers, Yorubas as 419ers but paint Fulanis as killers.

Momoh further claimed that armed herdsmen that were killing and maiming Nigerians were not from the country.

The former Minister warned against attributing killings to Fulani herdsmen, adding that the whole thing had been highly politicised.

In an interview with Sun, Momoh claimed that the killings were being perpetrated by criminals from Mali and Libya and not Fulani herdsmen.

He stated, “Killings are activities that the government did not envisage but the killings are a challenge to everybody. So, everybody should be blamed for the killings.

“Communication resolves everything. How much communication is there? And if there are no instruments of communicating, we must establish them rather than buying the weapons of war.

“But let me tell you and I am saying it with all sense of responsibility. Many people are playing politics with the killings. They are initiating a particular pattern of belief, which would undermine the credibility of their group in future.

“We had the Biafran war in 1967 -1970 and the South East held Nigeria to a standstill before it ended. So, nobody could undermine the Nigerian/Biafran war. Now, the issue of militancy confronted this country and reduced our oil production to less than one million barrels per day.

“Nobody can undermine the works the militants did in the Niger Delta. The National Democratic Coalition(NADECO) confronted Nigeria peacefully after the annulment of the 1993 election and in spite of what you may think, there was no coup in Nigeria that was resisted that ever succeeded.

“The 1993 annulment of the election of MKO Abiola was resisted through the activities of NADECO and so on and so forth, and that was how the compromises of 1999 brought in former President Olusegun Obasanjo from the South West zone of the country.

“From what I said now, you cannot undermine the Niger Delta, you cannot undermine the Igbo and you cannot undermine the Yoruba. And when the problem of the Fulani caliphate was there, they discovered that they could not undermine the Kanuri and the Tivs.

“But do you know what we are doing now because of politics? Anything that happens now, we say it is the Fulani herdsmen whereas it is since the collapse of the Libyan army and the problem in Mali that caused the free flow of weapons into Nigeria especially the activities of Boko Haram.

“And instead of looking at the challenges confronting Nigeria, we are saying that it is the herdsmen that are doing it. Cattle rustlers also seize the cattle and kill the herdsmen which is another issue confronting Nigeria but we in Nigeria because of politics always say killings are by the Fulani herdsmen.

“Do you know that what Othman Dan Fodio could not achieve when he was quoted as having said that he would dip the Quoran in the sea is being achieved through stupid politicking by saying that everything that happens in Nigeria is by the Fulani herdsmen?

“Anywhere you go to, people would say we cannot go to farm because of the Fulani herdsmen. This is when as a matter of fact, the Fulani herdsmen are in more danger than any other Nigerian. Do we talk of Igbo armed robbers?

“Do we talk of Yoruba 419ers and so on? We talk of all these as crimes and we should be talking of the killings as also a crime.

“But because of politics, we are going into areas to make our children believe that the fear of Fulani herdsmen is the beginning of wisdom.

“So, what Othman Dan Fodio could not achieve when he was alive in Nigeria, we are achieving it through communication and making our own children afraid of the Fulani. Remember that the Fulani are in the minority in this country.

“Can you see the way we are moving in the way of deforestation and who would pay for it; our children. We must have the right communication. So, I want to say that criminals do the killings and we must all come together to fight it.”

A gubernatorial aspirant in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Prof Adeolu Akande has taken the lead in the campaign for the collection of Permanent Voters Card (PVC) in the state.

The aspirant at the weekend took billboard spaces across the state for Public Service Messages enjoining residents to collect their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs).

The messages were in English language, Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo languages. One reads “Your Vote: Your Power. Collect Your Permanent Voters Card Today”.

Another reads: “Your Vote is Your Power. Collect Your Permanent Voters Cards Today”. The message in Yoruba reads: “Lofi Oruko Sile ki o si gba Kaadi idibo Alalope re loni “.

The billboards have the picture of the aspirant in white caftan and blue Yoruba traditional cap to fit.

Speaking on the campaign, a spokesman for the campaign organisation, Akeem Adetoyese informed that the campaign became necessary because of the high number of PVCs that remain uncollected in the state.

He stressed that INEC records indicate that 649,000 PVCs remain uncollected in the state. Adetoyese said that this is worrisome when compared to the total number of votes cast in the 2015 gubernatorial election in the state which was about 800,000 votes.

“We cannot afford to leave the mobilisation of voters to register and collect their PVCs to INEC alone. This is the duty of all and that is why we have taken it on as our social responsibility”.

He said the Adeolu Akande Campaign Organisation is first and foremost concerned about good governance in the state and believes the starting point for electing credible people into government is for eligible voters to register to vote.

“Prof Akande is committed to the emergence of credible leadership in the state and also believes in the right of the people to elect the candidates of their choice. They can exercise this right only when they duly register to vote.

“He also believes that a good number of our youths who turned 18 years only after the 2015 elections will be qualified to vote for the first time in 2019. We are embarking on this initiative to mobilise them to register so that they can discharge their civic responsibility and help install a good government at all levels during the 2019 elections”, he noted.

Adetoyese, however explained that the campaign is not limited to the outdoor advertisement but include broadcast media and advocacy outreach particularly to youth groups and academic institutions in the state.

“We are counselling our youths that the “likes” in Social Media platforms will not be counted in the elections. What will count are the votes and they can only vote when they register for the elections.

“We are telling them that their complaints on government performance will be futile if they don’t register and vote in elections. They should register and vote”, he counseled.
