No fewer than 8 communities in Minna, Niger State, have been plunged into total darkness following ongoing road construction at the Kpakungu Roundabout.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), in a statement on Wednesday, said the road project had forced a major power outage across several areas, including the Minna Sharia Court vicinity, Police Secondary School, Bosso Low-Cost, Bosso Estate, Tudun Fulani, Rafin Yashi, Minna Airport, Airforce Base, Maikunkele, River Basin, Soje, Kpakungu and parts of the Minna–Bida Road.

Others hit by the blackout include Limawa, Darulsalam, Barikin Sale, JFLA, CAILS, Beji, and nearby settlements.

The power firm apologised for the inconvenience and appealed for patience but gave no timeline for when electricity would be restored.

This outage comes on the heels of a similar incident during Easter when over 20 communities in Abuja suffered a prolonged blackout. Then, AEDC blamed a technical fault and an explosion on the 11kV incomer CT for disrupting supply to areas including Keffi Garage, Dadin Kowa, Orozo, Karshi, and several others.

Meanwhile, Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu has pledged that the national grid will gain an extra 4,000 megawatts by 2026.

Nigeria currently generates just around 5,000MW—far short of the estimated 30,000MW needed to meet national demand.

Nigerian House of Representatives has postponed the planned security summit billed to hold on Monday.

The lower house made this known ina statement on Sunday by its Clerk. Chinedu Akubueze, who also informed that the decision was in honour of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru and 10 other military personnel who died in a plane crash in Kaduna on Friday.

Akubueze expressed the House’s grief and sorrow to the families of the late top military officers, praying that the Almighty God will grant them eternal rest.

The statement partly read, “This is to inform the general public that the House of Representatives has postponed its national security summit scheduled to hold from Monday, May 24, 2021, in honour of the late Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant-General Ibrahim Attahiru, and 10 other military officers and men that died as a result of air mishap on Friday”.

The security summit, according to the statement, will now kick off on Wednesday, May 26, 2021.

“The House shares in the grief and sorrow of the families of the late top military officers and prayed that the Almighty God will grant them eternal rest.

“It should be noted that the postponement became necessary as the late Army Chief was one of the major stakeholders that would have taken part in the summit. The House regrets any inconvenience the postponement may cause invited guests”, the statement added.

Also commenting earlier, the Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, mourned the late COAS, noting Attahiru had “shown a lot of commitment in tackling the security situation in the country”.

While describing the late Attahiru as “a core professional officer,” the Speaker said the Nigerian military, especially the Nigeria Army, had lost a dedicated and committed senior officer whose services to the fatherland will be sorely missed.

Gbajabiamila, also sent his condolences to President Muhammadu Buhari, the Nigerian military, and the Attahiru family over the loss. He prayed for the repose of the souls of Attahiru and others.

As interesting as the political soap opera that is playing out in Ondo State now is, we must take out time to acknowledge the pleasantly absurd scene that jutted out of the soap last week. In the thick of the melee to get the Deputy Governor of the state, Agboola Ajayi, impeached and the usual shamelessness advertised by politicians in the state, we must not forget that the state swam out of this usual Nigerian water.

This was exhibited by the Chief Judge of the state, Oluwatoyin Akeredolu, who to my mind is the heroine of that soap opera. The Chief Judge, not kowtowing to political office holders, no matter their power and position, literally told the actors behind the impeachment that they were riding a roller-coaster of infamy.

To a request by the apparently financially instigated Ondo State House of Assembly, which was drunk on the bid to illegally impeach the deputy governor, Akeredolu, like a fearless judge that she apparently is, faulted the process of impeachment earlier spurned by the state legislators. In a letter dated July 9, 2020, Akeredolu had told the unruly and ostensibly shameless legislators driven by everything but the love of Ondo State, that their request to her to constitute a 7-man probe panel ran foul of constitutional requirements.

For me, no matter whether or not the legislators succeeded or eventually lived down their apparently influenced bid to impeach the deputy governor, that valiant pronouncement by Akeredolu could only have come from a heroine. This is at a time when men and women of honour, who can look political authorities in their bloodless faces and underscore justice, are becoming very rare in Nigeria.

It also strengthens the hope that we will survive the mercantilists and buccaneers in political offices who are gallivanting about like Lords of the Manor of Nigeria. It probably also confirmed the thesis which Ondo State people flaunt that men and women of honour still inhabit that land.

The outgoing governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola has said he did not earn salaries throughout the eight years of his administration, NAN reports.

Aregbesola disclosed this during an interactive programme tagged ‘Ogbeni Till Day Break’ on Saturday in Osogbo.

The governor said since it was the state that was feeding him, fueling his cars and providing him with accomodation, there was no need for him to be paid.

Aregbesola also said that he does not have any bank account where he keeps money in any part of the world.

“I have not collected salaries since I became the governor of the state.

“The state feeds me, fuels my car and provides me accomodation. With all these, I don’t need money.

“I have no money and bank account anywhere .

”I have no house except the one I built before I became the governor.

“Anyone can go out there to investigate if I have bank account”, he said.

Aregbesola, who will be handing over to the governor-elect, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola on Nov. 27, said he would vacate the Government House by Monday , Nov. 19.

He said the decision to leave the Government House earlier, was to give his successor enough time to do necessary renovations.

He said he had no regrets being a governor.

“If you give me another four years to rule again, I will still do what I did before and I will not do anything differently,” he said.
