In a statement released on Tuesday, Governor Abiodun addressed the circulation of a digital notice announcing the launch of a Sharia Court in Ogun State, clarifying that no Sharia Court is authorized to operate within the state.

He underscored that only courts established under the legal framework of the Nigerian Constitution are recognized, including Magistrates’ Courts, the High Court, Customary Courts, Customary Court of Appeal, Federal High Court, National Industrial Court, Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court.

“The Ogun State Government has noted the circulation of a digital notice announcing the launch of a Shari’ah Court in Ogun State,” Abiodun stated.

“No Sharia Court is authorized to operate within Ogun State. The courts that are legally empowered to adjudicate disputes arising within Ogun State are those established by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria or by State Laws.”

Governor Abiodun further stressed that Sharia law does not form part of the legal framework governing the state, asserting that the state government upholds and protects the rights of individuals to practice their religion freely but draws the line at unauthorized institutions.

“The Ogun State Government recognizes the freedom of individuals to practice their religion or to subscribe to no religion,” he continued. “However, this freedom does not extend to the formation of unauthorized assemblies or institutions. No individual or group is legally permitted to constitute a court or present themselves to the public as a court without legal backing.”

The governor directed those behind the illegal Sharia Court notice to immediately cease their activities and disband the unauthorized entity, warning that they have no legal standing to administer justice.

“The Ogun State Government hereby directs that all persons involved in the creation or operation of this unauthorized court must immediately cease all related activities and disband the illegal entity and all its apparatus,” Abiodun added.

He also urged the public to disregard any summons, documents, or individuals associated with the illegal court, advising that such matters be promptly reported to the authorities.

Abiodun concluded by reaffirming the state’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and maintaining the integrity of Ogun’s legal and judicial framework, stressing that the government will prevent any disruption of law and order.

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has said that his administration will commence the sale of rice at half the market price across the state to alleviate the prevailing economic challenges in the country..

Addressing attendees at a special Iftar organised for the League of Imams and Alfas in Abeokuta, Governor Abiodun emphasised the importance of alleviating the economic burden on the public, particularly civil servants.

He stated, “We have decided to commence the sale of rice. We will be selling it at the rate of 50% of the actual price.”

Highlighting the significance of restoring the purchasing power of public servants, the governor affirmed that the initiative aims to counter the impact of inflation.

He asserted, “What we are trying to do is put them in the position they were before the inflation.”

The governor disclosed the establishment of a committee to oversee the distribution of rice to residents, ensuring transparency and accessibility.

He emphasised the sustainability of the programme, stating, “If we sell at the price it was sold before it becomes expensive, it will allow us to use the money to buy more and continue to sell.”

Also, the governor pledged free rice distribution to the less privileged segments of society, including the poor, elderly, and vulnerable individuals.

Encouraging Muslims to uphold virtuous behavior beyond the fasting period, Governor Abiodun urged continuous prayers for the well-being of the state and the nation.

He reiterated his commitment to constructing a modern secretariat for the League of Imams and Alfas, promising a landmark facility that would set a standard for other states.

In recognition of his efforts towards peace and empowerment, Governor Abiodun was honoured with the title of Ambassador of Peace in Islam during the event.

Attendees also offered special prayers for the upcoming 72nd birthday celebration of President Bola Tinubu, scheduled for March 29th.

Imam Tajudeen Adewunmi, the Secretary of the League of Imams and Alfas, commended Governor Abiodun for his dedication to empowering Muslim youths and fostering goodwill within the community.

Babatunde Raji Fashola, the Minister for Works and Housing, announced this during a teleconference between the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun and the minister’s team.

This followed an intervention by Governor Abiodun over the deplorable state of federal roads in that corridor.

In an earlier statement, the Governor Abiodun’s Chief Press Secretary, Kunle Somorin, had said areas of immediate attention are the failed portions around Sango-Ota on the Lagos – Abeokuta express road and the Otta – Idiroko road.

The governor’s media aide noted that those portions of the federal roads have become a nightmare to motorists and commuters.

A team of engineers from the Federal Ministry of Works is now expected on Thursday for preparatory assessment ahead of the rehabilitation works.

Present at the meeting called at the instance of Governor Abiodun was the Minister; Managing Director, Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Engr. Nurudeen Rafindadi; Director of Federal Highway (Construction and Rehabilitation), Engr Folorunso Esan; among others.

Governor Abiodun assured residents of the state that his administration will leave no stone unturned in his commitment to building and upgrading public infrastructure across the state.
