Gernot Rohr, the Super Eagles technical adviser, has selected captain Ahmed Musa, deputy captain William Ekong and homeboys John Noble and Anayo Iwuala as part of the squad that will battle five-time African champions Cameroon in a friendly match in Austria next week Friday.

The list, also has goalkeepers Maduka Okoye and Francis Uzoho, defenders Ola Aina and Chidozie Awaziem, midfielders Wilfred Ndidi and Abdullahi Shehu, and forwards Victor Osimhen, Kelechi Iheanacho, Moses Simon and Simy Nwankwo,Turkey-based former U20 defender Valentine Ozornwafor, Denmark –based midfielder Frank Onyeka and Lorient FC of France’s Terem Moffi are also included.

Nigeria, who have won the Africa Cup of Nations three times but have been beaten by Cameroon in the final of the competition on three other occasions, defeated the Indomitable Lions 3-0 in a friendly in Belgium in October 2015, and yet to lose to the Lions in regulation time since a 1990 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Yaounde on 27th August 1989.

The German coach has seen the Fortuna Düsseldorf II goalkeeper as the solution to Super Eagles goalkeeping problem after 2019 African Cup of Nations disappointments.

Daniel Akpeyi, who was named the number one goalkeeper at the just-concluded tournament in Egypt, came under scathing criticisms for a largely unconvincing display.

Okoye is eligible to play for either Germany or Nigeria but the former Bayern Leverkusen safe hands has expressed his desire to represent Nigeria.

The goalkeeper, who plays in the Bundesliga 2, was invited to the U-23 national side for an Olympics qualifier earlier in the year but club commitments held him back.

“My aim is to improve all the departments in the team. The most important ones are the goalkeeper and then the goal scorer, they are already two challenges now, we’ve been working on it for a long time now,” Rohr told Sport Extra.

“We knew the problem in the goalkeeping department before the AFCON, and that it could be a big problem at the AFCON.So, the bronze medal is really an achievement and we could have even gotten to the final. When you go to the history of winners of AFCON, you must be good in this position, you must be very good and I think we can be.

“So, for the goalkeeper position, we have Maduka Okoye, who plays for Dusseldorf; he will be a good one (keeper), I think.”

The German led Nigeria to a third-place finish in this year’s Africa Cup of Nations, after they missed the last two editions.

However, Rohr has come under criticisms from certain quarters, for what some perceive as ‘lack of tactical nous’ or, in other words, an ‘inability to read matches’.

It is understood that the 66-year-old has told close associates, that he is uncertain if he wants to carry on.

“A lot of things have been going on but he has taken it all because he does not want to cause any controversy.

“But now, he is not sure if he will continue,” sources have told ESPN.

Rohr is due to meet Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick this week as part of that assessment.

And if both parties come to an agreement, a parting of ways might come sooner than most expect.
