The Federal Government has declared Friday, which is Good Friday, and Monday, which is Easter Monday as public holidays to mark this year’s celebrations.

This public holiday was declared by the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, in Abuja on Wednesday.

Aregbesola, in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Shuaib Begore, encouraged Christians to emulate the virtues of sacrifice, togetherness, forgiveness, kindness, love, peace, and patience which were attributes and practices of Jesus Christ, as exemplified by His ministry on the earth.

The minister called on Christians and all Nigerians to use the occasion of this year’s Easter celebration to pray for an end to the security challenges in parts of the country.

“Security is everybody’s business, I, therefore urge Nigerians and foreigners resident in our country to display a high sense of citizenship and public spiritedness by supporting the efforts of all security agencies in bringing peace and security of lives and property of the citizenry”, the statement said.

The minister assured citizens that the Federal Government is doing all that is necessary to ensure a peaceful transition of government following the peaceful conduct of elections.

While wishing Christians at home and in the Diaspora a happy and peaceful Easter celebration, he enjoined them to love their neighbours through acts of kindness and generosity of spirit, with the well-to-do sharing their substance with the less privileged around them.

Aregbesola once more assured Nigerians that the nation is persistently on the path to greatness and urged all to positively deploy their creative energy for the full realization of the coming prosperity. “There is surely light at the end of the tunnel,” he stated.

The government said in a statement on Thursday, that the development was to enable all public and civil servants pick their PVC to be able to perform their franchise in the July 16 governorship poll.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Wole Oyebamiji.

The statement read in part: “The Government of Osun State acknowledges the importance of workers in the democratic process, and is aware that the only way workers can give life to their aspiration for a worker-friendly government is through their votes.

“The government does not want anyone to miss out on the opportunity to exercise their constitutional right, especially as it affects their overall wellbeing and the security of their future, ” the statement read.

Also, the dare – devil armed robbers, who stormed the Ekerin, Araunsan, Fatokun and Bako communities and raided about twenty different houses, were repelled by OPC led by the Chairman of the group in Ido Local Government Area, Alhaji Muritala Ifawale.

Mega Icon Magazine learnt that the armed robbers, numbering about twenty – five, carted away properties, including phones, laptops, jewelries and cash; and also injured some of the residents of the areas.

In Ekerin community, as gathered, the robbers invaded residence of one of the executives of the Landlords’ Association and demanded for the money contributed by landlords for the purchase of a new electric transformer.

The Landlords’ Association leader, who confided in our reporter, explained that the hoodlums threatened to kill him and his family members after he told them the money contributed for the transformer was not with him.

He stressed that the arrival of OPC members led by Comrade Muritala Ifawale, salvaged the situation, as the hoodlums quickly jumped out of his house on hearing the sound of gunshots.

The OPC also prevented the armed robbers from raiding more houses in the areas.

There were exchanges of gunshots between the robbers and OPC  members for about one hour, but the hoodlum reportedly took to their heels after exhausting their bullets.

Victims of the robbery attacks who reported the incident to police at the Omi-Adio Police station, blamed the invasion of the armed robbers on activities of churches in the communities.

Some of the victims who spoke with our correspondent under the condition of anonymity, said the noise from churches having night vigil programmes did not allow other residents to hear their shouts for help.

Corroborating him, one of the victims, who simply identified himself as Baba Deola, said the shouts of “Amen” and “Alleluya” that rented the air from churches in the area prevented neighbours from hearing their distressed calls

Mr. Agboola said the leadership of the university has “approved resumption of activities on the institution’s campuses with effect from Friday, September 15, 2017,” while “students are expected to return to school on Monday, September 25, 2017.”

However, Agboola made it clear that academic activities will not commence, until after the Independence day holiday on October 1.

“Council thanked the governors of Oyo and Osun states, Senator Isiaka Abiola Ajimobi and Ogbeni Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola respectively, for agreeing to support the university with necessary funds to enable the university to return to its normal work schedule and reinvigorate its latent capacities for accelerated and sustainable growth and development,” he said.

In conclusion, he said, “concerted efforts should, therefore, be geared towards ensuring that nothing is allowed to disrupt the normal work of the university again.”

LAUTECH had been on shutdown since June, as various workers’ unions had embarked on indefinite strikes, to press home demands for payment of about 10-month salary arrears.

In his bid aimed at stemming the menace of criminal activities in some areas of the state, Governor Abiola Ajimobi has disclosed that his administration re-branded joint patrol team, code named Operation Burst, will be re-launched, noting that additional 20 vans will be distributed to the security outfit to aid their effectiveness and efficiency.

The governor also hinted that the reconstituted board of trustees of the state security trust fund, Oyo State Security Trust Fund (OYSSTF), will be inaugurated on Friday.

Governor Ajimobi speaking through the Executive Secretary of the OYSSTF, Mr. Femi Oyedipe said on Monday that the board to be inaugurated at the Executive Chambers is headed by the Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mr. Adebayo Adelabu.

Oyedipe unearthed that other members of the board are Dr Adesola Adeduntan, Engr. Femi Odumabo, Dr Falil Abina, Chief Kola Daisi, Mr Vickram Gursahaney and Dr Azeez Adeduntan, the state Commissioner for Health.

He said that the Operation Burst, which comprises of all the security outfits in the State, is expected to complement the efforts of the police in curbing crimes, adding that the officers of the joint patrol team have been mandated to operate in line with the best practices and in accordance with tenets of their security outfits.

The OYSSTF scribe sated that there will be restriction of vehicular movements at the venue of the re-launch of operation, Idi Arere area of the state, explaining that Mapo to Idi Arere and Bode to Idi Arere will be blocked while those coming from Popoyemoja and Kudeti should find alternative routes between the hours of 8am and 1pm.

His statement reads, “We want to passionately appeal to the people State to bear with us as there will be no road at the venue of the re-launch at Idi Arere. The governor has directed that the programme should be held at the crisis prone area, hence our decision to pick Idi Arere. Roads around the area will be blocked and we enjoin our people to make use of the alternative routes.

“The rebranded operation burst will complement the efforts of other security outfits in the state to curb crime. Our foundation for development is peace and security and we are not ready to negate our responsibilities to protect lives and properties,” Oyedipe submitted.
