Two students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, have been arrested by the police for allegedly conspiring to drug and rape a 20-year-old female undergraduate of the institution.

The spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, Olusola Ayanlade, announced this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Akure, the state capital.

According to him, preliminary investigations showed that the victim was invited to the residence of her long-time friend, 19-year-old Queen Sodo, also a student of the Ondo varsity.

“Trusting in the longevity of their friendship, which began in secondary school and continued into university, the victim accepted a drink provided by her friend, which was later found to have been laced with drugs, causing her to lose consciousness,” the statement read.

Ayanlade said once the victim became incapacitated, Sodo allegedly stepped out of the room, summoned her male co-conspirator and kept watch while the act was being carried out.

He added that a neighbour became suspicious after hearing unusual and inconsistent noises coming from the room and immediately raised the alarm.

“The victim was subsequently rescued by a neighbour who noticed the strange noise,” he stated. “She was found naked, unconscious and in a compromising position with the arrested male suspect, and was immediately taken for urgent medical attention.”

Ayanlade said the victim was later referred to a specialist hospital for comprehensive treatment and was currently recuperating.

He further noted that the suspects had confessed to their involvement and roles in the crime. Exhibits recovered from the scene included the bottle of the drug-laced drink identified by both the suspects and the victim.

The police spokesman added that the suspects were being held in lawful custody and would be transferred to the Gender Desk Office in Akure for further discreet investigation and prosecution.

Ayanlade assured residents that the command remained committed to tracking down criminal elements in the state and ensuring they face the full weight of the law.

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a 61-year-old Lagos socialite, Alhaja Aishat Feyisara Ajoke Elediye, popularly known as “Iya Ruka” in the drug underworld, following the interception of a truckload of illicit drugs allegedly linked to her.

The arrest took place on January 1, 2025, at her mansion located at 33 Adebayo Oyewole Street, off Ago Palace Way, Okota, Lagos.

According to a statement signed by the NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, Alhaja Ajoke’s true identity had been shrouded in mystery for years, despite her alleged role as a key figure in a drug cartel operating from Mushin, Lagos.

The operation began when NDLEA operatives, acting on intelligence, intercepted a white Isuzu truck carrying 44 jumbo sacks containing 1,540 kilograms of imported cannabis. The truck was reportedly driven by one of her staff members, 41-year-old Abideen Adio.

Following the interception, the operatives stormed her residence and arrested her.

Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended the officers for the success of the operation.

He praised their efforts in reducing both drug supply and demand across the country, emphasizing that such operational successes were crucial to the agency’s mission.

“The balanced approach to drug supply reduction and drug demand reduction by our operatives continues to yield commendable results,” Marwa stated.

Alhaja Ajoke, who is well-known in social circles, has been on the NDLEA’s wanted list for years for her alleged leadership role in the drug trade. Her arrest marks a significant breakthrough in the agency’s fight against drug trafficking in Lagos and beyond.

Investigations are ongoing, and the NDLEA has vowed to ensure that justice is served.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has ordered the immediate closure of the Gomboru drug market in Maiduguri following severe flooding that submerged the area and contaminated the drugs sold within the market.

In a statement posted on its official X handle, NAFDAC disclosed that the decision was made after reports surfaced that contaminated drugs, which had been washed and sun-dried for resale, were being sold at the market.

“After the recent flooding in Maiduguri that submerged the Gomboru drug market where contaminated drugs were washed and sun-dried for resale, the @DGatNAFDAC ordered the immediate closure of the market to conduct a thorough shop-to-shop removal of these compromised drugs,” the agency wrote.

The flooding, which ravaged Maiduguri, was triggered by the rupture of the Alau dam on the Ngadda River, located 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of the city.

The floodwaters claimed at least 30 lives and displaced 400,000 residents, leaving large parts of the city and surrounding areas in devastation.

NAFDAC’s intervention is aimed at safeguarding public health by preventing the sale and consumption of contaminated drugs.

The agency has mobilized teams to inspect the market and ensure the removal of all compromised pharmaceutical products.

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have apprehended a Delhi-bound passenger, Freeman Charles Ogbonna, at the screening point of terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Ikeja Lagos.

Ogbonna was detained for ingesting 80 wraps of cocaine.

The arrest took place on Sunday, March 31, 2024, as Ogbonna attempted to board a flight to Delhi, India via Doha on Qatar Airways.

He was in possession of a Liberian international passport under the name Carr Bismark.

According to NDLEA spokesman, Femi Babafemi, the suspect underwent a body scan which detected the presence of illicit drugs. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that Ogbonna’s real identity was Freeman Charles Ogbonna.

He was then placed under NDLEA observation, where he began to exhibit signs of discomfort.

“Obviously choked by the volume of illicit drugs in his stomach and another substance taken to hold back excretion, the suspect soon began to retch before starting to vomit and excrete wraps of cocaine he ingested almost simultaneously,” Babafemi stated.

“Over four days, Ogbonna expelled a total of 80 wraps of cocaine weighing 889 grams through his mouth and anus. Despite the grave risk to his life, Ogbonna claimed he was coerced into drug trafficking by a relative. He confessed that he was given the drugs to swallow at a hotel in the Ipodo area of Ikeja, with a promise of a cash reward of N300,000 upon successful delivery of the consignment in India”.

The NDLEA has since detained Ogbonna as investigations continue into the drug trafficking operation.

Unbelievable, though it seems, the man believed to be the cause of killing of innocent worshipers at a Catholic Church in Anambra State, a week ago, Aloysious Ebubechukwu Ikeguonu Alias Bishop, has reportedly worshiped in the same church today.

Few members of St. Phillips catholic Church Ozubulu, according to reports found courage to be at the worship center today notwithstanding the gory incident that occurred at the church the previous week.

The church began service at exactly 9am shortly after the Presiding cleric opened the church’s main gate, doors and widows

There were initial apprehensions that no one would turn up for the Sunday service for fear of another strike by a gang of drugs lords alleged to have killed close to 20 people during last Sunday service.

The Service, it was reported still held notwithstanding the initial fear exercised by worshipers said to have trickled into the Church shortly after the doors were thrown open.

An online news hound, Time News reported that most of those who worshiped at the church are members of Anambra State government.

The Catholic Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, Most Reverend Hilary Odidi Okeke had last Saturday dedicated the church, according to reports.

This is coming as another gang of gunmen on Sunday killed two men, a policeman and an okada rider, in another church in Anambra State.

According to reports, the church attacked today, was the Assemblies of God Church in Oguta area of Onitsha, the commercial nerve center of the state.

Available information had it that the policeman killed was one of those guarding the church.

He was said to be the only armed one among his colleagues.

His gun was taken away by the attackers.

An okay rider, who was close by when the attack took place, was also gunned down by the gang, who, some reported, were dressed as masquerades.

The spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, Nkiru Nwode, however, said the attack was on policemen who were on foot patrol along Oguta Road in Onitsha.

Nwode said the attackers were hoodlums who disguised themselves as masquerades to dispossess innocent citizens of their belongings and in the process killed a policeman and injured some others.
