Niger state government has declared that it is not sure of when the boarding schools that were shut down will reopen as a result of the insecurity ravaging the state.

The state Commissioner for Education, Hon Hannatu Jibrin, stated this during the reunion and handing over of the kidnapped Kagara students to their families on Sunday.

The Commissioner explained that the government is meeting with parents, teachers and other stakeholders to come up with a template for the reopening of the schools.

In her words, “The security challenge facing this state is huge and we have to ensure things are put in proper place before we will think of reopening the school. I can’t say when they will go back to school or when it will be reopened but we will ensure that the SS3 students are kept in touch with, to see how we will manage them so that they won’t miss anything and still write the final examination. Schools and students are delicate, but we are talking to the parents and other stakeholders to come up with a template for the reopening of the school”.

Speaking further, the commissioner encouraged the students not to be discouraged by their experience stressing that they should go back to the society as better people and identify a path to see how they can get out of the trauma caused by their abduction.

Also commenting , the Director-General of the Child’s Right Agency in the state, Hajia Mariam Kolo, who has been at the forefront of counselling of the students to get them out of the trauma described what they went through as indeed a harrowing experience.

Mariam, however said she was happy with the students’ response to their counselling.

She also stated that the agency has done its best and that there would be a follow up on the students adding that the feedback from them will determine what steps would be taken next.

The Seyi Makinde led administration in Oyo State has tasked stakeholders on an all-inclusive participatory implementation of Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) in the State, adding that the objective of the programme was to enhance access to quality education for the out-of-school children, improve literacy rate, and retain them in schools at the basic education level.

Governor Makinde made this call during a policy dialogue workshop on implementation of BESDA held at Emeritus Professor Theophilus Ogunlesi Hall in Ibadan, the state capital yesterday.

Speaking on his behalf, the state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof Kehinde Sangodoyin informed that the initiative would increase access to better education in the State, disclosing further that about Two hundred and seventy-two thousand, eight hundred and forty-seven out-of-school children would be beneficiaries.

Sangodoyin also hinted that the initiative intended to include every child in the free education policy of the State, “leaving no child behind and consequently making every child count”.

According to him, the state government’s free education policy has yielded an increase in the return of children to public schools across the State.

“Recently, the State Government has announced free and compulsory qualitative education at Basic and Secondary Education levels in the State. The resultant effects of which is an increase in enrollment in our public schools throughout the State,” he said.

The Commissioner ascertained that the State government had adopted proactive measures to enhance collaboration with relevant stakeholders in the education sector, to address the effects of out-of-school-children in the State.

While appreciating World Bank and Universal Basic Education Commission for their financial and technical supports, Prof. Sangodoyin added that “Oyo State, as one of the beneficiaries would ensure judicial use of funds to improve literacy and strengthen accountability for result.”

Also speaking at the event, the Executive Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Nureni Adeniran affirmed that the main objective of the programme was to eradicate child abuse and other vices in the society.

“BESDA programme will help in eliminating child abuse and child labour, improve health and hygiene, promote self reliance, increase economic growth and enhance social strength of the nation while eliminating the incidence of out-of-school-children”, he opined.

He urged parents and guardians to ensure the literacy of their wards and tasked teachers to be dedicated to their duties to revive the education sector.

Facilitators at the Workshop, Professor Rashid Adewumi Aderinoye and a former Chairman of the Board, Dr. Suleiman Adediran called on all stakeholders, including Government and its various agencies, School Based Management Committees, School Governing Boards to monitor and evaluate Basic education system for better students’ performance in the State.

Other Speakers at the event which heralded the commencement of BESDA activities in the State included, the Zonal Director, Universal Basic Education Commission, Mrs. Roseline Medubi, who called on all stakeholders, particularly parents to join hands with Government in the elimination of Out-of-School children in the State.

Representative of Traditional rulers in the State, the Eleruwa of Eruwa, H.R.M, Oba Samuel Adegboola, called for strict implementation of the law which prohibits child labour for effective implementation of the programme.

World Bank had granted a 611-million-dollar facility for the BESDA programme, designed to support Federal Government’s Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and to facilitate the implementation of the 2016/2019 Ministerial Strategic Plan (MSP) on Out-of-School Children (OOSC).

The programme was being implemented in 17 States, including 13 selected states of the northwest and northeast, as well as Niger, Ebonyi and Rivers states, while Oyo was the only beneficiary in the South West region.

The selection of the participating states was based on the prevalence of the number of out-of-school children, estimated at about 13.2 million in the country

THE immediate past commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology in Oyo state, Professor Adeniyi Olowofela has been recognised and honoured by the Centre for Organizational And Professional Ethnics (COPE-AFRICA) with SGB Icon award.

Speaking at the award ceremony on Monday which was held at the Lekan Are Hall, Government College Ibadan, the Chairman, COPE AFRICA, a UNDP consultant, Dr Adeyeye Adewole informed that the Centre deemed it fit to honour Olowofela due to his creative ideas, passion for development, innovative solutions to recurring problems in secondary sub-sector which led to the School Governing Board (SGB) initiative.

The Associate Professor, Adeyeye said from the onset the School Governing Boards (SGBs) initiative was one of the best thing that has happened to Oyo state in recent time. According to him, “every secondary schools across Oyo state is now being piloted by a governing council that work assiduously to enhance quality of administration; institute better policy directions; push for innovative practices and adopt creative solutions to specific problems and more importantly attract massive infrastructure and growth.

“In 2018 alone, the monetary worth of the quantum of infrastructure and other resources have been injected into Oyo State Secondary School system through the ingenuity of SGB is over N2billion. Many Schools are now experiencing phenomenal growth and infrastructure transformation through creative approach propelled outside the regular and mostly inadequate government provisions. On this special note, we commend the Oyo State School Governing Boards (SGBs) for this towering feat. We also commend the Chairmen and respected members of School Governing Boards (SGBs) across Oyo State for commitment in their services to humanity as well as implementation of legacy projects that has helped to reposition secondary education sub -sector for the benefits of unborn generation”, he added.

The COPE AFRICA chair further appreciated the Abiola Ajimobi led administration for this initiative ” that has become the toast of many states across Nigeria”.

In his remarks, Professor Adeniyi Olowofela, while expressing gratitude to Governor Ajimobi for the opportunity given to serve explained, “when we started the School Governing Board (SGB) system, we have to do advocacy. We moved throughout the entire education zone in the state to do training upon training for people and we thank God that today the School Governing Board (SGB) system is well understood. And as a dynamic system, definitely there will be improvement, so as you are moving forward using the template of the manual, we belief strongly that we will ultimately reach the peak as far as the best practices in education are concerned.

” I also want to congratulate you because Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN Commission), look at the School Governing Board system and they have adopted it as a policy for the entire Southwest of Nigeria. When they told me that they will be giving me award as ICON for School Governing Board, to me this is a collective award, its not a token of recognition of your efforts, especially all the members of the School Governing Board that are not taking one kobo for their service.

“But I know that it gladdens their hearts that they are contributing immensely to education in the state and it has also afforded them the opportunity to change the paradigm in the state. It is easy to criticize, it is even easy to condemn government, but what are your contributions to make sure that Nigeria and Oyo state change from what it used to be to where we are supposed to be? So, I thank you for your support, especially when it is selfless.

” Let me also say that we have to commend the secretaries of the School Governing Board, those that are the principals of the schools. They are the ones that are there every now and then to know the problems facing a particular school system and we know that they have been judiciously and wisely spending the funds in conjunction with the members of the board, money accrue or accruable to the school either through education development levy or by some direct supports from old students or community at large in moving education forward in the state.

“It also gladdens my heart that the intervention fund of SUBEB; as at the last time we had it was 2012 but as at today, Oyo State Government has been able to access, even up to 2018. The simple implication is that this will also affect our primary education positively. When you also see that the statistics and the job done by the Ministry of Education and all education stakeholders led to the fact that the discovery of out of school children in the state.

“Based on the policy paper written by these gentlemen in various ministries, Oyo State Government has secured the sum of $500m to tackle the issue of out of school children in the next five years. This is a project that will outlived this government and that’s how a good government must think, you must think beyond immediate, you must think about the future.

“Essentially this project is inter ministerial in approach, it may be resident in the ministry of education, but everybody must participate in it because each child counts as far as education is concern.

“When you want to destroy a nation, destroy the education of that nation and when you want to build a nation build the education of that nation”, Olowofela continued.

THE All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Public Schools, (ANCOPS), Oyo state chapter on Wednesday said the School Governing Boards, (SGBs) policy introduced by the Abiola Ajimobi led government has not only brought relief, but has positively enhanced their status as principals because the policy had afforded them the freedom to exercise authority, access opportunities to exhibit sense of creativity, potentiality, initiatives which has assisted in translating the vision to reality.

ANCOPS’ Secretary, Pastor Babajide Olujide, while speaking at the presentation ceremony of the distribution of School Governing Boards (SGBs) compendium to stakeholders in Education held at the conference room, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Agodi Secretariat, Ibadan, said that the policy has set an unbeatable records which can not be denied in the field of education in the state.

Commending the state governor, Abiola Ajimobi, the ANCOPS’s scribe who averred that the policy has maintained a rhythmic progress stressed “the ideal of the SGBs that came up as a policy for us to be implemented in Oyo state brought a lot of relief and a new era into the administration of secondary schools’ administration.

https://iso.keq.mybluehost.me/oyo-restates-commitment-to-providing-conducive-environment-in-schools/

“What we are talking about is not political, we are talking about reality. There is no sentiment about it. We knew where we were before, we knew what is happening now, the difference is so clear because schools have taken a new shape, new things are springing up, so visible for everybody to see”, he added.

Olujide continued, ” in fact, I was so touched by the impacts of this SGBs. It has become a gospel we have been spreading from one state to the other. ANCOPS as a confederation, we operate at different levels and all along we have been sharing our experience in Oyo state with other colleagues in various states.

“They have been so inquisitive about the extent of development going on in Oyo state and they wanted to know the secret behind it. We are bold as a confederation to speak about it any day, anywhere regardless of the situation and circumstances”, he maintained.

Earlier in his remarks, the state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Adeniyi Olowofela noted that the School Governing Boards had contributed immensely to the development of education in the state, adding that the boards had frontally addressed the infrastructural challenges confronting the schools.

Acknowledging the commitment, dexterity and courage of the governor on the policy, Olowofela said, ” I am proud to say today that many of the Governing Boards had meticulously provided our schools with basic infrastructural and academic needs. Some had renovated abandoned and dilapidated classrooms; new classrooms were constructed in some schools, E-Library projects were provided in some schools while many schools have their ICT centre totally overhauled”.

He explained that the compendium is a documentation of projects, programmes and achievements of the School Governing Boards, (SGBs) in all the Public Secondary Schools in the state since their inauguration.

The Commissioner further noted that the compendium will go along way in ensuring the sustainability of the schools, convince members of the public and stakeholders in education that the current administration is determined to reposition education and not ready to keep people in the dark in the implementation of this new education policy; and also a strategic way of engendering a healthy rivalry among the school managers.

AS part of efforts towards improving the standard of education in the state, the Oyo state government has introduced School-on-Air teaching method to further enhance academic programmes of public secondary schools with a view to reduce rate of failure in internal and external examinations.

Addressing newsmen in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital on Monday, the state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Adeniyi Olowofela who made this disclosure, explained that the pertinence of the programme to the success of secondary school students in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination informed the government’s decision to subscribe to the programme for public schools in the state.

According to the commissioner, the newly launched concept was introduced to take quality education to the door step of the students and also to complement teachers’ efforts towards promoting academic excellence in schools, especially in the remote areas where there may be limited numbers of teachers.

“Students do not need to move about with lorry loads of text books and the hazardous implication of either losing it completely or tearing off. All a student needs to do is to go to the class and watch qualitative lectures on the screen, just like watching the popular world class football competitions.

Education: DAWN Commission adopts Oyo SGBs template.

“But this time around the students are not watching legs; they are watching and listening to lectures according to their various time -tables. If our students make good use of the facility, it will go a long way to boost learning in school and student’s performance”, Olowofela explained.

Also, he added that the partner to the state government on School-on-Air project, Educational Advancement Centre, Ibadan deserved commendation for its ingenuity.

The free-to-air satellite TV channel on Calvary Network entails only a decoder and dish to enjoy 16 Senior Secondary School Certificate subjects packaged on School-on-Air educational scheme.
