Chief Edwin Clark, the leader of the Pan-Niger Delta Forum, has criticised former President Muhammadu Buhari, alleging that his eight-year administration set Nigeria back by five decades.

In a Thursday statement, the elder statesman asserted that Buhari’s governance failed miserably, lacked direction, grappled with insecurity, and witnessed economic collapse.

Clark’s remarks were prompted by the launch of the book “Working with Buhari: Reflections of A Special Adviser, Media and Publicity (2015-2023),” authored by Buhari’s former Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina.

The book unveiling also included five volumes of another work titled “Muhammadu Buhari, the Nigerian Legacy, 2015-2023.”

The South-South leader contended that Buhari’s glowing depiction of his achievements during the book launch contradicted the prevailing assessment of citizens regarding his tenure in office.

“What struck me most was the attitude and statement of former President Buhari, who eulogised his achievements as President of the country during the occasion. This, I must say, is contrary to the assessment of the majority of Nigerians of his administration.

“To most of us as Nigerians, Muhammadu Buhari failed abysmally as President. His administration was full of insecurity, economic collapse, injustice, religious bigotry, and lack of direction. The eight years of his administration plunged Nigeria and Nigerians five decades backward. Even his successor, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noted as much in his speech at the time when Buhari was eulogising himself,” Clark submitted.

The elder statesman emphasized that restructuring the country will help address its challenges.

Reacting  to the Independence Day speech by President Muhammadu Buhari, Clark said, “Without restructuring, no meaningful progress will be achieved in this country”.

He  faulted the President’s address to the nation, maintaining that there was nothing in the speech that he had not said before.

He noted that while it was worth commending that Nigerians have continued to live together in the last 59 years, a lot of issues needed to be addressed.

Top among the issues highlighted by Clark are restructuring for a better nation and the security of the lives and properties of citizens.

Contrary to the government’s position on the war against Boko Haram insurgency, he insisted that the insurgents have not been decimated.

According to him, there are security problems in the northern and southern parts of the country, including the activities of armed herdsmen.

“Not a single herdsman has been captured. They are moving around everywhere – both in the North and South and with the problem of insecurity in the North-West, things are not okay,” he said.

The elder statesman added, “We must put politics aside, as for the security of this country; the Federal Government cannot do it alone.

“That is why many of us are suggesting that we should have a security round-table talk. The problem in Nigeria today is not in the North alone, it’s a national problem which requires everybody to talk about it.”

He further called on the government to tackle poverty and unemployment, as well as reduce the number of out of school children in the country.

Their dismissal was contained in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Mr Jimoh Moshood on Thursday.

DAILY POST had reported that Operatives of the Force, on Tuesday, raided the Abuja residence of the leader of Pan-Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, Edwin Clark.

This was followed by the immediate detention of the police personnel, informant and an apology by the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris,

Moshood said the officers were dismissed for their ‘unprofessional misconduct while in search of the residence of Chief Edwin Clark in Asokoro’.

The statement reads, ”The Inspector General of Police has approved the dismissal from the service of the Nigeria Police Force, three (3) Inspectors namely: (i) AP/No. 18858 Inspr Godwin Musa (ii) AP/No. 225812 Inspr Sada Abubakar and (iii) AP/No. 225828 Inspr Yabo Paul, and the immediate interdiction of AP. No 158460 ASP David Dominic who were involved in the unauthorized, illegal and unprofessional misconduct in the search of the residence of Elder Statesman, Chief Edwin Clark in Asokoro, Abuja on 4thSeptember, 2018.

”Ap. No. 158460 ASP David Dominic was queried and being investigated for Discreditable Conduct, Negligence of Duty and an Act unbecoming of a Police officer which constitute Serious Misconduct and if not checked can be inimical to the image of the Nigeria Police Force and violation of fundamental human rights of the Elder Statesman as provided for in the 1999 Nigeria Constitution as amended. The gravity of the offences against the officer is serious in nature and dismissal from service is imminent.

”Consequently, the Inspector General of Police approved that AP. No 158460 ASP David Dominic, be on interdiction from Service pending the determination of his case by the Police Service Commission.

”The IGP also approved and upheld the dismissal from service of (i) AP/No. 18858 Inspr Godwin Musa (ii) AP/No. 225812 Inspr Sada Abubakar and (iii) AP/No. 225828 Inspr Yabo Paul, after the trio were tried under Oath in Orderly Room Trial for Discreditable Conduct, Illegal duty, Disobedience to Lawful Order and other misconduct contrary to the Rule of Law.

”The suspect (Informant) Ismail Yakubu from Waru Village, Apo District, Abuja, has been charged to Upper Area Court Mpape, Abuja for giving false information and telling falsehood that misled Police action.”

Contained in a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, Saraki called for an open, comprehensive investigation into the incident.

Also, he described the incident as an “unwarranted harassment of the statesman” who is known for being very vocal in expressing his views on national issues.

Senator Saraki further observed that the harassment must not be allowed to be covered up without the public knowing all the details, particularly concerning who gave the order, who signed the police search warrant, which officers executed it and what objective it was meant to serve.

“Chief Edwin Clark, a Second Republic Senator, former minister under the General Gowon administration is not just anybody.

“Yes, he is not above the law. If there is a genuine reason for his home to be searched by law enforcement agencies, nobody will object to it.

“However, as it now appears, for the Police to conduct a raid on the home of a man of that age on the pretense that they were looking for arms and eventually, the claim turned out to be a hoax, then something must be amiss.

“This type of action by the Police coming at this time when the nation is preparing for election is not reflecting well on the country. Such actions constitute a threat to democracy.

“They represent gross abuse of state institutions. Now that the Inspector General of Police has denied that the raid was never authorized, the next move should be a thorough, transparent investigation into the Senator Edwin Clark incident to prevent future occurrence.

“This kind of ugly development must stop. This country experienced peaceful change in 2015 because the government in power allowed democracy to work. If the government had allowed the flagrant abuse and misuse of state institutions to be the norm, we would not have had the change that occurred”, he stated.

Saraki however, reminded the government of its recent commitment to world leaders on the need to create a peaceful and conducive atmosphere necessary for a credible, free and fair elections where citizens can freely exercise their franchise, devoid of intimidation, suppression and abuse of their fundamental human rights.

He noted that incidents like the one in the home of Chief Clark is in conflict with the promise the government made to these world leaders.

“Democracy is not only about elections. Circumstances that will create tension in any part of the country or make people feel that their fundamental human rights are being trampled upon should be avoided.

If a man of the caliber and status of Senator Edwin Clark could suffer such unwarranted raid on his home, then what happens to ordinary Nigerians as we move towards the 2019 polls and beyond?”, he questioned.
