“After the COVID-19 tests carried out yesterday on our first team footballers by the Real Madrid Medical Services, our player Mariano, tested positive,” Real said in a statement.

“The player is in perfect health and is complying with the protocol of isolation at home.”

Mariano did not join the Real squad as players returned from a post-season break to start training for their Champions League last 16 showdowns at Manchester City on August 7. The 26-year-old has not appeared in that competition this season.

The Dominican international, who returned to Real in 2018 after a successful season at Lyon, played little in the recently finished La Liga season due to competition for places and injuries.

He made only five substitute appearances as Real won their 34th Spanish title, scoring once, an added time goal against Barcelona.

Karius underwent scans at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and medical staff believe the concussion sustained during the game affected his performance.

“After carefully reviewing game film and integrating a detailed history – including his reported present and immediate post-contact subjective symptoms – physical examination and objective metrics, we have concluded that Mr. Karius sustained a concussion during the match May 26, 2018.

“At the time of our evaluation, Mr. Karius’s principal residual symptoms and objective signs suggested that visual spatial dysfunction existed and likely occurred immediately following the event.

“Additional symptomatic and objectively noted areas of dysfunction also persisted. It could be possible that such deficits would affect performance.

“We also note that Mr. Karius has reported significant and steady improvement since the concussive event, and we expect him to make a full recovery based on the results of the examination,” a statement on the hospital’s website read.

Karius collided with Sergio Ramos during a corner early in the second half and moments later he was at fault for Karim Benzema’s goal.

The 24-year-old also erred for Madrid’s third goal, failing to deal with Gareth Bale’s long-range shot as the Spaniards ran out 3-1 winners.

City secured their place in the last eight by beating Basel, having won the away leg 4-0, but then lost 2-1 at home in the second leg.

Liverpool saw off Porto in the round of 16, which also saw an impressive away performance with a 5-0 victory at the Estadio do Dragao ahead of a routine goalless draw at Anfield.

Anfield will host the first leg of the quarter-final tie, which will be played on April 3 or 4 with the second leg to be held on April 10 or 11.

The two English clubs have already played each other twice in the Premier League this season.

Manchester City romped to a 5-0 home win during September, with Gabriel Jesus and Leroy Sane both scoring twice after Sadio Mane had been sent off.

Liverpool, though, gained revenge at Anfield in January when they inflicted what so far has been the only Premier League defeat for City, who were beaten 4-3 with two late goals adding some respectability to the final scoreline.

Elsewhere in Friday’s quarter-final draw, holders Real Madrid were handed a tie against Italian giants Juventus, who beat Tottenham in the last round.

La Liga leaders Barcelona will play Roma, while the reward for Sevilla’s victory over Manchester United was a date against Bayern Munich of Germany.

The Spanish giants last wore a red kit in the 2011-2012 season, when they won La Liga under current Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho.

Images of a red training jacket to accompany the kit were also leaked.

The jacket features similar shoulder detail to the shirt, with the club crest on the left breast.

The photos were leaked by website FootyHeadlines but are yet to be confirmed as authentic by Real Madrid.
