Bode George said this when he formally flagged-off campaign for the Chairmanship position of the opposition party at an impressive gathering of PDP members drawn from across the federation, which held at the City Hall Lagos on Friday.

He said he would work tirelessly to revive the dream and principles of the PDP founding fathers anchored on justice, fairness and equity as enshrined in the constitution of the party.

He said as the PDP National Chairman, he would bring back the dignity of PDP by working diligently to unite members while mending fences and healing old wounds for all to attain the collective aspiration of the once ruling party.

He said PDP under his leadership will strive to revive the economy of Nigeria which had been battered, working with well meaning members of the party to get the presidential power in 2019.

Bode George said his first task, if elected as the next PDP Chairman would be to reconcile feuding factions while according party officials at all levels the recognitions they all deserve while also protecting their interests.

The Atona Oodua said having actively served at the topmost echelon of PDP for 10 years, working with the most experience members, his loyalty to the party has never been in doubt a reason members should repose confidence in him to serve well as their National Chairman.

He said, “I have learned the ropes and I have been guided by the collective wisdom of our leaders across our great nation. I fully understand the precepts, the mechanisms and the constitution of our party

“I know the tradition, the culture, the guiding ethos and the normative patterns that our leaders have built and nurtured for so many years. If elected, I am willing and ready to work with everyone regardless of personal differences to mend the broken places, to heal the ancient wounds, to reconcile the feuding factions and ultimately ensure that we strengthen our collective brotherhood and speak with one voice to regain victory in 2019.

“I will never compromise our foundational principles of justice, fairness and equity as enshrined in the constitution of our party. We will equally accord all our governors, and legislators at both state and national levels the necessary pride of place and honour in this new dawn. We will protect their interests and help to enhance their effectiveness.

“If I am given the privilege to serve, I will never play the role of an overlord. I will serve with dignity and diligence. I will respect the mighty and the low without discrimination. Together, we will remove impunity. Together, we will restore discipline and fair play. We will always insist on internal democracy.

He, however, thanked the Chairman, Alhaji Ahmed Makarfi and members of the Caretaker Committee of the PDP on what he described as their commitment, loyalty and their ability to pull the party from the brink of collapse. The Caretaker Committee, he said had done a great work over the past one year.

He also commended stakeholders of PDP on their resolve to zone the Chairmanship position to the south-west zone, describing the zoning arrangement as a veritable tool for stabilizing the PDP.

Bode George had served as Zonal Vice Chairman south-west, Deputy National Chairman South and Deputy National Chairman overall, the second highest position in PDP, while he had also helped to resolve crises within the party in all geo-political zones of the federation.

PDP members who graced the formal declaration of Chief Bode George include, Former Minister, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, former Deputy Governor, Lagos state, Senator Kofoworola Bucknor Akerele, former Minister of Communications, Chief Dapo Sarumi, Former Minister of Special Duties, Elder Wole Oyelese, former PDP Chairman Ogun State, Chief Joju Fadairo,, Former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Erelu Olusola Obada, National Vice Chairaman PDP, Dr Eddy Olafeso, former PDP Chairman, Lagos State, Captain Tunji Shelle, former Interim National Chairman PDP, Chief Ishola Filani, all Exco members of PDP in Lagos state.

Others include, Hon Tajudeen Obasa, Chief Kehinde Kuku, Chief Tajudeen Oladipo, Mr Seyi Makinde, governorship aspirant, Oyo state, former Deputy Governor, Oyo State, Chief Azeem Gbolarumi, Aremo Femi Adetola, Chief Remi Akintoye Hon Oladele Bankole Balogun and PDP leaders from south-east, south south and the north.

As announced by the Organising Committee, the venue of the event is City Hall, Mission Street, Lagos Island.

The interest of the A’tona Oodua in the PDP Chairmanship is predicated on resolve by the party to zone the position to southwest.

Although zoning of the slot of PDP Chairman to south-west has continued to generate ripples as the south-south zone is said to be showing keen interest also, indications are rife that the leaders of PDP have been meeting to resolve the issue.

Newspot Nigerian learnt that top leaders of PDP in the south-south have also been meeting to take a common position on the Chairmanship issue such that the zone would eventually work in harmony with the southwest to produce the next leader of the party.

PDP has been taking cautious and conscious steps towards making its next National Convention where new set of leaders would be elected, a huge success.

The opposition party had suffered near collapse amid multiple crises which it contended with for more than a year following the emergence of former governor of Borno State, Alhaji Modu Sheriff as the National Chairman, just as litigations trailed every attempt it made to elect new set of leaders.

Repreive came the way of PDP a couple of weeks ago, when the Supreme Court recognized the leadership of Senator Ahmed Makarfi as Chairman Caretaker Committee, while the court judgement completely dislodged Modu Sheriff.

Some months earlier, the South-south and South-east leaders of the PDP had agreed at a meeting in Port Harcourt to zone the National Chairmanship position of the party to the South West geo-political zone.

The leaders of PDP had predicated their preference for south-west on the party’s leadership on the fact that the zone has never produced a Chairman before.

In the same vein, the PDP had zoned the position of First Deputy National Chairman to the South-South.

The South-South also got the positions of National Legal Adviser, Deputy National Women Leader and Deputy National Auditor.

According to the zoning formula released by the Ike Ekweremadu Reconciliation Committee in 2016, the South-East got the National Organising Secretary, National Youth Leader and Deputy National Financial Secretary.

There are reports that leaders of the PDP from the south are to meet again before the coming National Convention to mitigate tension over the zoning arrangement as part of efforts to prevent another implosion within the ranks of the opposition party.

The leaders, at a meeting held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital recently, condemned the actions of some members of the party among whom are Kashamu, just as they congratulated Senator Ahmed Makarfi for his landmark victory at the supreme court.

The former Chairman of the South West Mobilization Committee of PDP, Senator Buruji Kashamu is currently representing Ogun East Senatorial District.

According to a communique issued at the end of PDP meeting held in Ibadan, the party declared that the anti-party activities of some of the members led the party to lose elections in Ondo, Ogun and Edo states, hence there is a need to sanction them.

Zonal Chairman of the party, Dr. Eddy Olafeso, who flanked with Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state, Chief Bode George and Otunba Iyiola Omisore while reading the communique enjoined the Ogun State chapter of the party to do away with anything that has to do with Senator Kashamu and stop dealing with him henceforth.

Condemning the activities of some members of the party which led to its downfall for over a year, the party disclosed that it has set up a machinery to some defectors of the party back to the PDP fold.

“First and foremost, the South West Zonal Leadership congratulates the National Caretaker Committee of the party under the able leadership, His Excellency, Senator Ahmed Makarfi and other distinguished members of the National Caretaker Committee of our great party over the landmark victory recorded at the Supreme Court on the 12th of July , 2017

“The Zonal Leadership also hereby condemn and regret the action and ignoble role of some of its membership that led to the unfortunate experience and trauma that held the entire party down for over a year now and pray that may such never reoccur again in our great party

“The entire Southwest leadership and stakeholders condemn the destabilizing and anti-party activities of Senator Buruji Kashamu and demand disciplinary actions against him for his roles in the loss of the party in Ogun, Ondo and Edo states.

“The zonal leadership and stakeholders hereby dissociate the zone from the activities of Senator Buruji Kashamu and resolve further to henceforth desist from dealing with him in any capacity in the zone, and the leadership of the party in Ogun state are hereby directed to stop all dealings and meetings involvement with Senator Buruji Kashamu and his agents until further notice.

“The Zonal Leadership and stakeholders also hereby reject any association whatsoever with Senator Buruji Kashamu henceforth.

“It is hereby resolved that a special committee be set up at the zonal and national level to reach out and appeal to all those who had left the party as a result of the disruptive and destructive activities and act of sabotage visited upon the party”, the communique reads.

Earlier in his remarks, Governor Fayose of Ekiti State, who is the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum said the Supreme Court did justice to Nigeria and not PDP.

Fayose stressed that the party which is now in opposition is optimistic to retain the power in 2019.

“Today we are in opposition, tomorrow we will be in power. This party must be protected.

“We need a President that is hale and hearty. Looking inwards it is time to reposition PDP, it is time to take decisions, if you have problem and you did not nip it in the bud, the problem will continue.

“God saved us first time, second time, we must save ourselves.

The governor added that the problem of PDP in the region started from Ogun State where Kashamu hailed from.

“The whole problem of PDP in South-West started from Ogun state”.
