Tax Evasion: Court renews arrest warrant on ex-Eagles Captain,Okocha

Following his failure to appear in court to answer to the charge made against him, a Lagos High Court sitting in the Igbosere area on Monday renewed its bench warrant for the arrest of a ex-Super Eagles Skipper, Austin Jay-Jay Okocha for alleged tax evasion.

Justice Adedayo Akintoye renewed the order of arrest as a result of Okocha’s alleged failure to settle his income tax.

The ex- footballer was charged by the Lagos State Ministry of Justice in a three-count charge bordering on failure to furnish return of income.

The Prosecutor, Dr Jide Martins had on June 6, 2017, filed the charge, adding that the case came up for the first time on Oct. 5, 2017, but the defendant did not appear in court.

But, after several adjournments without the defendant appearing in court when service have been effected on the defendant, the prosecutor urged the court to issue a bench warrant.

Justice Adedayo Akintoye on January 29, 2019, had earlier issued a bench warrant for the arrest of the ex supper eagles icon and adjourned until February 19, 2019.

However on February 19, the prosecution had not effected the arrest, the court ordered that on the next adjourned date the order should have been executed.

Justice Akintoye adjourned the case until today for the execution of the bench warrant and further hearing.

The Lagos State Prosecutor submitted that the offences contravene Sections 56 (a) and (b) of the Lagos State Revenue Administration Law No.8, 2006.

Also Section 94 (1) of the Personal Income Tax Act Cap P8, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

Okocha returns to Bolton Wanderers as coach

Ex-Super Eagles captain, Austin Jay Jay Okocha has been offered a coaching role at Championship outfit Bolton Wanderers.

The football icon, Okocha who was voted by the clubs’ supporters as their greatest player ever played for Bolton at the new stadium played for the Wanderers between 2002 and 2006.

Okocha, 44 is expected to make a sensational return to the club, as he will join up with the clubs backroom staff for the 2018/2019 season.

According to reports, Okocha, who is the player who has completed the most dribbles at a FIFA World Cup tournament was linked to the move by John Harriot, a UK based football agent.

Harriot tweet reads, “The African Prince Jay-Jay Okocha is set to join the Bolton Wanderers backroom staff. Will be a great influence on the young players at the club #BWFC”

As at the time of filling this report, there has been no official confirmation from the Bolton website about Okocha’s appointment to the backroom staff.

Okocha who contributed 12 goals in 124 appearances for Bolton is seen as a role model youngsters want to emulate and will be well suited to a role at his former club.
