The suspension takes immediate effect, according to a statement issued by the spokesperson to the Speaker of the House, Eromosele Ebhomele.

During the plenary session, the lawmakers resolved that the council’s vice chairman, Akinpelu Johnson, should assume leadership of the local government, directing the council’s management, including the manager and treasurer, to recognise and support Johnson to effectively discharge his duties.

Jelili’s suspension came after a unanimous vote by the legislators, citing his non-compliance with directives and his defiance towards the House.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government Administration and Chieftaincy Affairs, Sanni Okanlawon, moved the motion, referencing a chaotic incident in April 2024, in the Iyana-Ipaja axis of Alimosho, which resulted in the death of one Michael Ajayi.

Okanlawon, whose committee was tasked with investigating the cause of the chaos, alleged that Jelili had orchestrated the incident. He noted that despite inviting all relevant stakeholders to the House for questioning, Jelili had repeatedly displayed acts of misconduct towards the committee.

The lawmaker further accused Jelili of disregarding the Assembly’s directives and mismanaging public funds. Citing relevant sections of the 1999 Constitution as amended, Okanlawon called for Jelili’s immediate suspension.

Supporting the motion, Majority Leader Noheem Adams argued that Jelili’s actions, particularly his failure to adhere to procurement processes and budgetary guidelines, warranted his suspension.

“The Alimosho council chairman does not follow procurement processes or the budget. There have been a lot of misconducts from him, and I support that the chairman be suspended indefinitely,” Adams added.

Also, Nureni Akinsanya, Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts for Local Government, referenced a report submitted by the State Auditor-General, which highlighted Jelili’s continuous non-compliance with financial regulations, noting significant irregularities in the council’s records under his leadership.

The Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, who presided over the session, directed the Clerk of the House, Olalekan Onafeko, to formally communicate the Assembly’s resolution to all relevant authorities for immediate action.

This commendation was contained in a release jointly signed by the association’s Chairman, Prince Ademola Omiyale, and the Publicity Secretary, Mr. Sheriff Adeniji, against the backdrop of the recent appointment of the erstwhile council boss of Alimosho Local Government and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, Mr. Bola Ilori, as one of the commissioners in the newly constituted cabinet of Ogbeni Aregbesola’s led government in Osun state.

According to the release which was made available to journalists yesterday, described the Osun State governor as one who has shown through his actions, since the mantle of leadership in Osun State fell on him, that the interests and progress of the Yoruba nation is paramount in his heart.

The association lauded the governor for his visionary quality, through the re-appointment of Bola Ilori, an Ondo state’s indigene, and an industrious youth into his cabinet, adding that, majority of today’s public office holders in the country lack this rare leadership quality which according to the release distinguish the likes of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, from the multitudes of crowd.

“With the appointment of Bola Ilori, a non-indigene of Osun State and a distinguished youth into his government, Engr. Aregbesola, who himself was a former commissioner in Lagos State during Bola Tinubu’s reign, has demonstrated that the leadership tutorial he learned from Asiwaju Bola Tinubu political school, while in Lagos, is also practiceable in other States provided that the person at the helm’s of affairs demonstrate the will to put it into practise.

“Having said this, we are appealing to other state governors in the Yoruba nation to emulate the exemplary leadership qualities of Engr. Aregbesola by looking for talents and young blood regardless of their state of origin who will add positive values to governance and jettission the old style of governance of “omo wa ni e je o se” which does nothing but drive the wheel of governance backward, afterall, we are all descendant of Oduduwa”.

The release concluded that just as Lagos State has been transformed through purposeful and visionary leadership, Osun state under the guidance of ogbeni, against the wishful thinking of some enemies of progress had weathered the storm of economic recession and has being set on the path of economic prosperity which will soon be a template for exemplary governance in the country just as Lagos state has become.
