The Appeals Committee, in a press briefing held in Abuja, the nation’s capital explained that it was aligning itself with the APC screening committee’s inability to vouch for the authenticity of the NYSC Certificate presented by Governor Obaseki.

Speaking shortly after the Committee’s announcement, the party’s National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole disclosed that the party’s National Working Committee will now meet to deliberate on the screening report, in order to make a final decision.

Oshiomhole added that the NWC will meet right away after which they will address the press.

Governor Obaseki’s disqualification was announced on Friday.

Although he rejected the screening committee’s report, Obaseki has said he will not appeal the decision.

Ologbondiyan, also stated that the position of the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives as well as the Deputy Senate President and the Deputy Speaker are not the exclusive preserves of any political party, but a constitutional right of every elected lawmaker in both chambers

The party’s mouthpiece described it as laughable that President Muhammadu Buhari and the alleged factional National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, “posture as if the presiding offices and Committee Chairmanship in the National Assembly are exclusive rights of the APC”.

“President Buhari and Oshiomhole should wake up to the fact that the National Assembly belongs to no political party but to all Nigerians, who exercise their control through their elected representatives.

“For emphasis, Section 50 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) is clear in providing that “There shall be:- (a) a President and a Deputy President of the Senate, who shall be elected by the members of that House from among themselves; and (b) a Speaker and a Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, who shall be elected by the members of that House from among themselves.

“Section 92 (1) makes the same provision for the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of State House of Assembly,” he added.

Continuing, Ologbondiyan reminded President Buhari and Oshiomhole that “the APC had in the past benefited from the provisions of section 50, with the defection of the then Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal from the PDP to the APC, in October 2014, without relinquishing the speakership of the House to the PDP; a development that was applauded by President Buhari, as the then-opposition leader as well as the APC, through it’s then National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed.

“In fact, the former Minority Leader of the House, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, echoed the Constitutional provision that the constitution requires only that the Speaker or Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives shall be elected by members of that House from among themselves”.

The party further gave other instances of Hon. Terkimbi Ikyange and Hon. Peter Azi, who according to them in 2015, were elected Speakers of the Benue and Plateau State Houses of Assembly respectively, though their party, the APC, was a minority in both Houses.

Ologbondiyan, therefore, stated that the PDP does not only have a constitutional say in the process of the emergence of the leadership of the 9th National Assembly but will, as a matter of constitutional right, field candidates into presiding offices of both chambers, if need be.

Barrister Shittu insisted that anything short of his prayer will spell doom for the party in Oyo State.

The minister boasted that he was the only credible aspirant who can deliver the state for the ruling party in 2019.

Shittu, who also called on the party to consider justice and restitution before talking of reconciliation stated this in a telephone interview with an online newspaper.

The ex- Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, who believes the crisis could be resolved, said the right thing must be done. He emphasised that the only thing he needed from the committee is restitution and justice, then reconciliation will follow.

“It is painful that everybody talks of peace without talking about justice.”

While advocating for Justice, Shittu submitted: “Before you talk of reconciliation, let there be restitution. After restitution, then we can talk of true reconciliation. We all condemned PDP for their injustice and impunity, why are we not doing things differently if truly we are progressives. What I mean by restitution is for the leadership of the party to return the ticket to me and make my very good brother, Adelabu as my running mate”.

The Minister further condemned what he described as impunity and imposition in the ruling party, saying that the party is not doing things differently from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which was responsible for its Waterloo in 2015.

He, however warned the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) never to follow the path of the PDP which led to its political harakiri.

Contained in a statement issued by the Ogun state government on Saturday, contrary to the position of the APC National Chairman, “the only gubernatorial primary held in the state was that of October 02, 2018, which produced Hon Adekunle Akinlade as the winner”.

The statement was in reaction to a press briefing by Mr Oshiomhole on Friday, during which he accused the Ogun governor of taking series of steps in a bid to impose his preferred candidates on the APC and contravening the party’s constitution.

Also, Oshiomhole had earlier insisted that the authentic governorship primary conducted by the APC in Ogun produced Mr Dapo Abiodun and not Akinlade as the party’s governorship candidate.

The Ogun governor, however, faulted Oshiomhole’s position and the language he used to express the same.

“Governor Amosun notes the unsavoury language used against him by the garrulous party chairman, but he will not descend into the gutter to exchange words with him because where he comes from, there are “acceptable standards of conduct expected of people holding certain offices, a virtue he wishes Oshiomhole would exhibit”, a statement by the Ogun State Commissioner for Information, Mr Adedayo Adeneye stressed.

The governor further explained that the emergence of Akinlade was initially through a consensus arrangement as allowed by the party constitution but was nevertheless subjected to a primary election when some gubernatorial aspirants disagreed with the outcome of the consensus arrangement.

“This is, however, without prejudice to the sanctity of the consensus arrangement which Adams Oshiomhole hypocritically tries to demonise,” Governor Amosun added, faulting the APC chairman’s criticism of his plan for consensus candidates.

He argued further that “Oshiomhole himself was elected National Chairman of the APC by consensus arrangement which witnessed all other contestants to the office being prevailed upon to step down for him (Oshiomhole)”.

Governor Amosun also accused Oshiomhole of double standards, saying, “The ground on which Oshiomhole disputes the gubernatorial primary in Ogun State is that the result was not announced by the State Electoral Committee from Abuja, therefore the governor resorted to self-help”.

“We wonder why Oshiomhole accepted the result of the primary election in Lagos State whose result was also not announced by the State Electoral Panel. Why will the same scenario be acceptable in Lagos State but regarded as self-help in Ogun State?” he added.

Oshiomhole was affirmed after he emerged as the sole candidate for the position.

The ex- Governor of Edo State was one of the 18 candidates affirmed unopposed by delegates at the national convention of the party in Abuja.

Delegates are expected to vote so as to elect candidates for the remaining 42 positions.

The names of each of the unopposed candidates were mentioned by the Chairman of the national convention committee, Governor Abubakar Badaru Mohammed of Jigawa State, while the delegates in affirmation chorused ‘Yes’.

Oshiomhole was the first candidate to be mentioned by Mohammed and the delegates chorused ‘Yes’ in affirmation.

The Chairman of the national convention committee, Mohammed said, “The convention procedure is to start with the affirmation of candidates that have won unopposed, thereafter, we will go state by state to go and cast the vote in the 10 centers that we have designated for voting.”
