He made this announcement during a meeting in Abuja with the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, and her management team, as reported by NIDCOM spokesman, Abdur-Rahman Balogun.

The Minister expressed concerns about the imbalance in certain migration and visa policies that could make Nigeria a destination for undesired migration.

He emphasised that the review would consider the principle of reciprocity, in line with international norms.

Tunji-Ojo lauded NIDCOM’s proactive approach, highlighting its potential to enhance the welfare of Nigerians in the Diaspora and promote a positive image of the country abroad.

He also acknowledged challenges in passport processing, capturing, and collection and promised to improve efficiency in these areas.

Dabiri-Erewa praised the Minister for improvements in passport issuance and advocated for a more efficient passport capturing and collection process for Nigerians living abroad.

She reiterated the need for collaboration between NIDCOM and the Ministry, outlining various initiatives and programmes aimed at supporting the welfare of Nigerians in the Diaspora.

She also stressed the urgency of creating a structured platform to address complex diaspora issues requiring coordinated efforts from various government entities.

The Federal Government has expressed concern over its inability to evacuate Nigerians in Sudan as a deadly crisis continues to plague the North African nation.

Chairman, of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, also disclosed on Friday evening on Twitter that efforts had been put in place by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Nigerian Mission in Sudan.

She however noted that the authorities were experiencing challenges, particularly concerning airlifting Nigerian nationals out of the troubled country.

“While @nemanigeria and the Nigerian Mission in Sudan have put in place necessary arrangements, any flight now is gravely risky,” Dabiri-Erewa tweeted.

The NIDCOM boss stressed that humanitarian groups were making efforts to distribute food, water, and medicals, while all efforts were being put in place to hopefully get the warring parties to ceasefire.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with our citizens there, and the whole country,” she added.

The country is experiencing hostilities owing to two warring generals who seized power in a 2021 coup: army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who commands the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Amid the crisis, Nigerian students in Sudan cried out to be evacuated from the in-crisis country.

Responding, NIDCOM on Thursday revealed that plans were already underway to see to the evacuation of Nigerians in Sudan, adding that meetings were being held as to how best to handle the evacuation process.

The Senior Special Adviser to the President on Diaspora and Foreign Affairs, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa stated this while delivering her personality lecture to commemorate University of Ibadan at 70.

While presenting her lecture entitled ‘Building Capabilities of Nigerian Youths Against Slave Trade or Illegal Migration’, Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa explained that slave trade and illegal migration are national tragedy which deserves urgent attention by all relevant stakeholders

Hon Erewa said hundreds of Nigerians are dying due to the illegal migration which the present administration under President Muhammadu Buhari has made frantic effort in this regards.

According to her, Over 10,000 Nigerians were deployed from Libya after a serious negotiations between the two countries before their release.

In her words, “what we saw in Libya is pathetic and worrisome. Some Nigerians are still stranded in Libya because government can only reach where there is no war”.

She added that countries like Libya, Malaysia, Omar,Saudi Arabia,Morocco China, India, Russia among others have zero tolerance for illegal migration.

The veteran broadcaster and three term member of the House of Representatives, said NAPTIP and other agency must ensure that traffickers were pulled down.

Also speaking at the event, the wife of the Oyo State Governor, Mrs Florence Ajimobi congratulated the University of Ibadan at 70 for remaining the best citadel of learning in Nigeria.

Mrs Ajimobi, who was represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Due Process, Mrs Rose Oyedele commended the guest lecturer, Hon Erewa for her commitment towards ensuring a better Nigeria.

The Oyo First lady emphasized the need for people to join hands with government in eradicating slave trade and illegal migration.

Earlier in his address, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Idowu Olayinka who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Professor Kayode Adebowale said the institution would continue to nourish a leader for better tomorrow.

The programme also provided a platform for the students to ask questions regarding illegal migration and slave trade

The programme also featured presentation of awards to some eminent Nigerians who had contributed greatly to advancement of the education sector.
