Britain’s Charles III reaches the milestone of his first year as king this week, with his reign so far characterised by a smooth transition from that of his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

The anniversary on Friday is expected to be marked privately, given the date is also that of his mother’s death at the age of 96.

Charles, 74, has slipped into his new role with apparent ease after some 70 years waiting as her heir — the longest of any in British history.

But despite expectation of reform, he has not yet made sweeping changes to the monarchy, fuelling perceptions that his is a caretaker role before his eldest son and heir Prince William takes over.

“I think the transition has been much smoother than was anticipated,” Pauline Maclaran, a professor at Royal Holloway, University of London, told AFP.

Charles was officially crowned alongside his wife Camilla on May 6 at London’s Westminster Abbey in front of royalty and global leaders.

The lavish ceremony observed centuries-old rituals but was shorter and less elaborate than his mother’s in 1953 and aimed to be more representative of modern Britain.

“I think we can expect maybe small changes, but he is really paving the way for William, and I imagine William will be the real moderniser of the monarchy,” Maclaran said.

Charles remains behind his late mother and 41-year-old William in the popularity stakes, but his approval rating has received a significant boost since his accession.

YouGov polling suggested 55 percent of Britons have a positive opinion of their new head of state, compared to 44 percent a year ago.

His first televised Christmas Day broadcast — a traditional address to Britain and the Commonwealth, which he also heads — was watched by a record 10.6 million viewers in the UK.

‘More humanity’

As king, Charles has made several trips around the country, often accompanied by Camilla, and has generally appeared more open and approachable than Elizabeth II.

“Even the photos that they (the palace) released, official photos, are a lot more relaxed,” said Jonathan Spangler, a history lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University.

“There is a bit more humanity,” he said, adding that Charles “is more aware that these things need to be done”.

According to Maclaran, Charles has shown himself as “humble and accessible” at a time when Britain is grappling with the worst cost-of-living crisis in a generation.

The only public image hiccup so far was his frustration with a leaky pen after the formal meeting confirming his accession, she added.

Anna Whitelock, a historian of monarchy, said while there had been no “major error”, there also had not been “any kind of defining moment” of his reign.

“Big questions remain: how is he going to respond to calls around an apology over colonial legacy? The whole question about exemptions from taxation?” she added.

The pro-republic movement — which wants an elected head of state — has meanwhile seized the chance to renew debate about the constitutional future of the British royal family, long muted by public respect for the ageing and infirm queen.

Charles has often been greeted on his tours by anti-monarchy banners and slogans, and even had eggs thrown in his direction.

State visits

The king, who is also head of state of 14 Commonwealth countries outside the UK, including Canada, Australia and New Zealand, has made only one state visit, to Germany.

His first was set to be to France in March, but it was postponed as angry protests against pension overhauls shook the country. The trip has been rescheduled for later this month.

Reports indicate a major overseas tour is in the works to improve relations with the Commonwealth.

Charles has however received foreign leaders, including US President Joe Biden, South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

While Elizabeth II was seen as especially dedicated to the Commonwealth — the 56-nation grouping of mostly former British colonies — for Charles “the emphasis is global”, Spangler said.

Closer to home, Charles has also had to handle the revelations in the tell-all memoir of his younger son Prince Harry.

He and his American wife Meghan also released a docu-series, lifting the lid on their reasons for quitting the royal family in 2020.

“Charles handled this very well. He didn’t start to cast blame or reply really. He stuck basically to the Queen’s mantra ‘never explain, never complain’ when the accusations came,” Maclaran said.

“I honestly don’t think the scandal has been any more damaging than what the monarchy has suffered many times before,” she added.

Global audit and tax advisory firm, KPMG, has projected that Nigeria’s unemployment rate is expected to rise to 40.6% as compared to 2022’s 37.7%.

KPMG in its International Global Economic Outlook report – H1 2023 on Tuesday, detailed this forecast, noting that “unemployment is expected to continue to be a major challenge in 2023 due to the limited investment by the private sector, low industrialization, and slower than required economic growth and consequently the inability of the economy to absorb the 4-5 million new entrants into the Nigerian job market every year”.

The report also revealed in part that there are expectations for GDP to continue to grow at a relatively slow pace of 3% in 2023 owing to the slowdown in economic activity that typically characterizes periods of political transition in Nigeria.

KPMG further explained that the spillover from an expected slowdown in the global economy in 2023 and its trade and financial flow implications are expected to drag on GDP.

“Additionally, growth will be negatively affected by the Naira Redesign Policy introduced in Q4 2022 and Q1 2023 and its implications on key non-oil sectors like manufacturing, trade, accommodation and food services, transportation, and other services, further slowing down overall GDP growth in 2023,” the report added.

On the resurgence of major aspects of the economy, it forecasted that the telecommunications, trade services, as well as the oil sector, are expected to see recoveries, due to measures being taken to tackle security issues.

According to the upper chamber, the amendment of the 2022 Appropriation Act is to ensure the implementation of the key capital project in the Act which has not been funded at this time.

The upper chamber said it is expedient that the capital projects be extended to prevent the problem of abandoning projects in the budget.

The supplementary budget is to address food security following devastating floods across the country as well as damages to road infrastructure and the water sector.

The wholesale arm of Rocket Mortgage on Tuesday raised anticipated agency conforming loan limits to $715,000, a sign that the nation’s largest mortgage lender is confident the maximum loan limit set by the federal government will rise by at least 10% in 2023.

The increased loan limits for mortgage brokers apply to new registrations and locks effective Sept. 6, the lender said Tuesday. They’ll require a full appraisal.

Rocket’s gambit comes during one of the company’s most challenging periods in memory, and could enable the Detroit lender to win much-needed purchase business through brokers during a critical period of an ugly year.

“What you’re seeing is lenders getting out of wholesale,” said Austin Niemiec, executive vice president of Rocket Pro TPO. “We’re leaning in and investing while others are getting out … Being the first to market, building the tech and getting it into brokers’ hands is one example.”

As mortgage rates climb to the mid 6% range and home values continue to increase, the new conforming loan purchase limit will offer better pricing, require a smaller down payment for home purchases and easier documentation compared to a jumbo loan, Rocket said.

The conventional loan limit for 2022 is a baseline of $647,2000 for one-unit properties, rising to $970,800 in high-cost areas, which suggests limits on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac purchased loans could eclipse the $1 million mark in 2023.

It was always expected that lenders would increase loan limits ahead of the Federal Housing Finance Agency‘s November announcement, though Rocket’s move appears to be the earliest push yet. Lenders last year didn’t raise anticipated conventional loan limits until early October, when rates were still in the low 3% range.

United Wholesale Mortgage and PennyMac were the first lenders to announce their conforming loan ceiling hike by 14% in 2021. Rocket Mortgage and Homepoint made their announcements the following week.

The risk for Rocket and those that follow is limited; the Housing and Economic Recovery Act established a formula for increases in 2008 that mandated that the baseline could only rise after home prices returned to pre-recession levels. That condition was finally met in 2016 when the FHFA increased the conforming limits for the first time in a decade.

As the wholesale lending space faces increased competition with UWM’s Game On pricing initiative, Rocket Pro TPO also plans to diversify its product portfolio by offering home equity loans in mid-September.

Speaking to HousingWire earlier this month, Niemiec emphasized consistent pricing and long-term growth for brokers, saying the company won’t “play games or gimmicks, temporary flash things for marketing purposes.”

Following UWM’s initiative to increase market share by cutting prices of up to 100 basis points across all types of loans, lenders including AmeriSave and loanDepot exited the wholesale channel. More lenders that don’t have enough capital are expected to fall victim to UWM’s aggressive price cuts.

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde has said the country needs God’s intervention for the planning and peaceful conduct of the 2023 general elections.

Speaking at with the pilgrims on Saturday at the premises of the Oyo State Pilgrims Welfare Board (Christian Wing), in Ibadan, Makinde tasked intending Christians pilgrims on the holy pilgrimage to Jerusalem from the state to pray for the success of the 2023 general elections in the state and Nigeria as a whole.

Governor Makinde who was represented by his Executive Assistant on Administration and General Services, Rev. Idowu Ogedengbe, stated: “As you all know, we will be going to the polls again in 2023 to vote and elect our leaders.

“We want God to make the planning and final conduct of the elections to be peaceful without rancour and any form of violence, banditry or terrorism.

“As we are joining others to pray for those in authority in 1 Timothy 2, please also remember to pray for our Governor. That God will continue to crown him with wisdom and guidance as he steers the ship of the present administration. Because of many of the good works that he has started in the state, he will be given another opportunity to complete them.

“It is important to also remind you that as new cases of COVID-19 infections are being reported in some states lately by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), it is important that you observe all the necessary protocols towards the prevention of the disease. Thankfully, we don’t have any new cases in Oyo State and our earnest expectation to God is that none of you will come down with any infection as you embark on this pilgrimage.”

Makinde noted that the Christians embarked on holy pilgrimage in order to see, feel, touch and experience the reality of the historical places, where the favourite Bible characters trod, sites and monuments that Christians have only had the opportunity to read about in stories and writings of the Bible.

Veteran actor, Kanayo O Kanayo has said that Nigerians who are yet to get their Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) are part of the problem in the country.

The movie star said this via a video shared on his Instagram page.

Kanayo noted that Nigerians have the power to save the country by going to vote, rather than going to church or mosque to pray.

Highlighting the problems in the country, the 60-year-old actor pleaded with Nigerians, who collect money from politicians to cast their vote, to stop being cheap, adding that the state of the nation calls for urgent action.

Kanayo said: “Please stop being cheap by selling your votes; the current state of our country calls for immediate action if we must save our father land. People are being kidnapped and prisoners set free to go and continue their evil enterprise, the list is endless.

“You and I have the power to save our country. No one can do it but you. Do not say your vote will not count.

“First, go and perform your civic responsibility of casting your vote.

“Going to vote is better than going to church or mosque. Do not misunderstand me. If you’re going to church and there’s a security situation, how will you get there?

“Everything is not all about prayer, there’s no Jesus Name where they are voting, that is why you have been saying In Jesus Name and these guys have been doing the same thing.

“There is no voting on social media. It is a physical exercise. If by now you have not gotten your PVC, you’ve become part of the problem of this country.”

Oyo state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken a swipe at Governor Seyi Makinde over his alleged denial of clandestine plans to cross carpet from the Peoples Democratic Party for known political reasons describing the development as shameful, immoral and regrettable.

It will be recalled that the social media platforms were awash, on Monday, by speculations about Governor Makinde perfecting plans to join the APC having reached out to some powerful stakeholders within and outside the Southwest but this was denied by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, who claimed in a statement that Oyo APC was the one wooing the governor in views of his personality and achievements in office.

While reacting through a statement issued on Tuesday and made available to journalists in Ibadan by the Personal Assistant (Media) to the State Caretaker Chairman, Chief Akin Oke, Olawale Sadare said that “Gov. Makinde played the ostrich by denying apparent moves to join the APC through the back door.

“While we appreciate the fact that there is free entry and free exit in party politics, we are disappointed that a governor can turn a desperado in his bid to be an overlord in the entire political space in a state like Oyo. With what Gov. Makinde has just done, genuine democrats and other stakeholders in the nation’s democratic environment have a good cause to renew their fear for the future of democracy and the rule of law.

“Available facts indicate that he (Makinde) had established contacts with a former governor from the Niger Delta region who now lives in Abuja. The same former governor also co-opted some influential gladiators within the APC at the national level to penetrate the Southwest ostensibly to whittle down the dominance of others who they consider a threat for their own inordinate ambition ahead of 2023. It is on this premise that Gov. Makinde’s overtures were considered and given some backing in principle.

“Even if we were to agree that Gov. Makinde, just like every other person, has the right to join any party of their choice at any point in time, we must set the record straight that Oyo APC cannot consider him an asset or good addition for obvious reasons. With virtually all the gladiators involved in the unfortunate coalition arrangement which gave victory to the PDP in the 2019 gubernatorial election now in the APC after deserting him for tenable and justifiable reasons which revolve around insincerity, selfishness and undemocratic traits.

“Meanwhile, Oyo APC has kept intact the machinery with which we won two Senatorial seats out of the available three as well as nine out of the available fourteen House of Representatives seats in the 2019 election. If anything, the population of those elected on the platform of our party has increased while more people are coming into the fold in their large numbers. Is it then that we would begin to woo somebody who has been deserted by 90 per cent of his key political benefactors in less than two years in office?

“And with the fate that has befallen members and supporters of the PDP in the state who had hoped for a fair dealing in the build up to the illegal local government election slated for May this year, the Makinde political anthill risks further depletion. Therefore, the truth remains that Oyo APC would not need a character like Gov. Makinde who still has a long way to go if he desires to emerge a strong, credible and popular political player during and after his four year tenure”, the statement added.

Fagade stated this while addressing newsmen shortly after revalidating his membership of the party at his Ward in Lagelu Local Government Area of Oyo state.

He noted that the excercise is the best thing that is happening to the party in recent time.

According to him, the party needs rejuvenation, adding that “right now we are registering new people who have not been registered with the party before. It’s a way for the party to boost its membership.

“I am grateful to God that I am able to do the registration today. I can say I am a member of APC and I will enjoin everybody to do the same.

“You can’t question what you are not part of, you can only ask questions on what you are part of and this is the structure”, the APC chieftain stressed.

While expressing his satisfaction on the excercise so far, Fagade said “the participation is amazing, in my ward alone, we have done over a hundred in one day and today is the first day.”

He emphasized on the need for party members to unite.

He continued, “We need to do what is supposed to be done before we can claim victory but we are on the part of victory, we need to come together, and channel our efforts toward making sure that we have a better nation.”

Also, the trio of Prof. Adeolu Akande, Senator Adesoji Akanbi and Chief Niyi Akintola were well represented at the meeting.

According to the communique signed by Alhaji Adesina Alabi for Meeting Conveners and Communique Drafting Committee, the stakeholders informed that the meeting was the brainchild of some concerned members of Oyo APC who feel the need for Progressive family members across the eleven Local Government Areas of Ibadanland to channel a new course and mobilize for unity, harmony and cooperation with a view to repositioning the party.

They further re-echoed the need for oneness and togetherness, stressing that this was considered very essential for the party to bounce back and reclaim its lost glory and thus emerge stronger and more virile.

Also contained in the communique, the conveners regretted the step taken by some faceless people to discredit the meeting through what they described as sponsored noise in the mass media which was aimed at discouraging genuine members and delegates from attending the meeting.

The party’s fanatic loyalists lauded conveners for the efforts made towards strict adherence to Covid-19 protocols.

However, the stakeholders again , appealed to those behind the tagged futile call for boycott of the meeting to have a rethink and join others to rebuild Oyo APC if they were genuine in their claims as members of the Party.

The communique read, “Stakeholders at the Meeting were, therefore, unanimous in their call for more commitment, team spirit and love for one another among Party faithful as the 2023 general election beckons.

“At the Meeting, it was reported that Progressive elements from Ibarapa axis expressed their desire to be carried along in the efforts to reflect Ibadanland/Ibarapaland Agenda for the APC.

It continued, “Stakeholders welcomed briefing from the National Headquarters of the APC ahead of the forthcoming membership registration and revalidation exercise which they promised to accord all necessary support to ensure that a good population of existing and new members are captured in the exercise.

“Conveners expressed gratitude to eminent party leaders especially former governor, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala, who was represented at the Meeting by Chief Wale Ohu and also the State Caretaker Chairman, Chief Akin Oke”.
