Ibadan Chief Imam defies NSCIA, MUSWEN, Sultan’s order, celebrates Eid-Fitri

The Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Sheikh AbdulGaniyu Agbotomokekere on Thursday defied a directive by the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar and the Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN) by celebrating the Eid-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan fast.

Daily Post had reported that the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), and the Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN), had warned Muslims in the zone and across the country not to break their fast until a directive to do so was issued by the NSCIA and the Sultan after the crescent of the new month has been seen.

But, the Chief Imam despite the directive, led other prominent Muslims in Ibadan, including the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji to observe the two-rakah Eld Prayer at the Ibadan Eid praying ground located at Agodi.

The development has raised concern among Muslims who felt that the decision of the the Chief Imam of Ibadanland to observe the Eid-el-fitr on Thursday (today) was not in line with the rules of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, the apex Islamic body in the country.

They said that there was no official announcement by the Sultan of Sokoto and the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs that a new moon has been cited, adding that the new moon marks the end of the 29-day long Ramadan and the start of the 10th Islamic calendar of Shawwal.
