No fewer than 2,243,816 candidates on Thursday commenced the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board across accredited Computer-Based Test centres nationwide.

The figure represents a 10.5 per cent increase from the 2.03 million candidates recorded in 2025.

The examination, which began on April 16, is being conducted in about 1,000 CBT centres nationwide, with candidates scheduled in four daily sessions to reduce congestion and improve verification processes.

The board said it had deployed biometric verification and real-time monitoring systems to safeguard the integrity of the exercise, noting that candidates whose biometric details could not be authenticated would be rescheduled.

Candidates were advised to print their examination slips from the JAMB portal to confirm their schedules and arrive at least one hour before their examination time.

Under the revised timetable, first-session candidates are expected at 7:00 a.m., followed by 9:00 a.m. for the second session, 11:00 a.m. for the third session, and 2:00 p.m. for the final session.

JAMB disclosed that Lagos State recorded the highest number of registered candidates with 381,814, followed by Ogun with 137,156 and Oyo with 122,662. Kaduna recorded 103,498 candidates, while the Federal Capital Territory had 102,961.

Other states include Rivers with 105,584 candidates and Kano with 83,167, while Borno and Zamfara recorded the lowest figures with 13,483 and 14,861 candidates respectively.

Outside Nigeria, participation remained low, with Côte d’Ivoire recording 32 candidates, followed by Equatorial Guinea with 16, Burkina Faso with 14, and the United Kingdom with 12 candidates.

As part of efforts to enhance efficiency, the board increased the number of CBT centres but delisted 23 centres across several states, including Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Delta, Edo, Plateau and the Federal Capital Territory, over technical deficiencies observed during the mock examination.

The board said the action was necessary to maintain operational standards and ensure the credibility of the examination process.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force dismissed reports of insecurity at some centres, describing such claims as unfounded.

The police said it had deployed additional personnel, including patrol teams, perimeter surveillance units and rapid response squads, to ensure the safety of candidates nationwide.

The force added that it was collaborating with other security agencies to monitor the exercise and respond swiftly to any threats.

It assured parents and candidates of adequate security, urging candidates to comply with examination guidelines, arrive early and report suspicious activities.

The police also advised the public to disregard unverified information on social media and rely on official communication channels.

JAMB reiterated its commitment to transparency, warning candidates against accepting admissions outside its Central Admissions Processing System.
It stressed that any admission conducted outside CAPS would be considered illegal and would not be recognised.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has delisted 23 Computer-Based Test centres nationwide following technical deficiencies recorded during the 2026 mock Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

The Board disclosed this in a bulletin issued on Friday and signed by its Public Communication Advisor, Fabian Benjamin, as preparations intensify for the 2026 UTME scheduled to hold across the country from April 16 to April 25.
According to JAMB, the mock examination was designed to assess operational readiness and identify centres that failed to meet the required technical standards.

“Following the conduct of the 2026 Mock Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, the Board has delisted 23 Computer-Based Test centres for technical deficiencies,” the statement read.
The Board added that several centres with minor issues had been placed on notice, warning that continued non-compliance could lead to further sanctions. It also stated that one centre would no longer be used for any of its examinations.

JAMB disclosed that a total of 2,243,816 candidates registered for the 2026 UTME, with Lagos recording 321,814 candidates, Kaduna 303,498, the Federal Capital Territory 302,963, and Ogun 137,156.

To improve accessibility and logistics, the Board said it increased the number of approved examination centres to 1,000 nationwide, up from fewer than 800 in 2025.

However, an internal review conducted after the mock exercise revealed that some centres failed to meet operational and technical benchmarks, prompting their removal from the approved list.

The delisting followed reports of widespread technical glitches during the mock examination, including network failures, system malfunctions and delayed commencement of tests in several locations. Some candidates and parents also complained about hours-long waiting periods at affected centres.

The affected centres are located in Abia, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, the Federal Capital Territory, Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Oyo and Plateau states.

Among the delisted centres are Micben Seat of Wisdom Academy, Ukwa West, Abia; Bishop Crowther Seminary CBT Centre, Awka, and The Oracle Lens, Nnokwa, Anambra; Derby’s Young ICT Centre, Yenagoa, Bayelsa; Avid ICT Solutions CBT Centre, Asaba, Delta; and Daniet Global Resources CBT Centre, Benin City, Edo.
Others include De-Lite CBT Centre, Maitama, Abuja; Florin High School CBT Centre, Ejigbo; Folbob CBT Centre, Lakowe; Great Kezino College CBT Centre, Ikorodu; Obans CBT Centre, Ikorodu; and Teesas Learning and CBT Centre, Lekki, all in Lagos.

Also affected are Braingate Model Schools CBT Centre, Arepo, and Greenhills Academy CBT Centre, Itele, Ogun State; Oduduwa University CBT Centre, Ile-Ife, Osun State; Lasting Glory Schools CBT Centre, Ibadan; Nesam International School CBT Centre, Ibadan; SAF Polytechnic CBT Centre, Iseyin, Oyo State; and Rabjib Computer Academy, Jos, Plateau State.

JAMB stated that the decision formed part of efforts to safeguard the integrity of its examination process and ensure that only centres that meet its operational requirements are used for the main UTME.

The Board assured candidates that necessary measures had been put in place to ensure a smooth conduct of the examination nationwide.

The Federal Polytechnic Ayede on Thursday matriculated no fewer than 705 students for the 2025/2026 academic session, with the management warning the newly admitted candidates against cultism, examination malpractice and other social vices capable of truncating their academic pursuits.

The Acting Rector of the institution, Dr. Azeez Olasunkanmi Ojo, disclosed this during the Polytechnic’s fourth matriculation ceremony held at its temporary site in Iresa-Pupa, Oyo State.

Ojo described the ceremony as a historic milestone for both the institution and the new students, noting that the matriculation marked their formal admission into an academic community built on knowledge, innovation and character.

“It is with great pleasure and a deep sense of responsibility that I welcome you to this fourth matriculation ceremony. This event signifies your formal admission into a community committed to knowledge, innovation, character and excellence,” he said.

The acting rector urged the students to remain focused and take advantage of the opportunities available to them, stressing that discipline and dedication were critical to their success.

He added, “You must take your academic work seriously and uphold the values of learning, dexterity and sound moral conduct. Avoid cultism, examination malpractice and drug abuse, as these vices can jeopardise your future and cut short your dreams.”

Representing the Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education, Prof. Idris Bugaje, the South-West Zonal Director, Elder Ayo Aroge, commended the management of the Polytechnic for its steady growth.

He charged the newly admitted students to embrace the Federal Government’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training initiative to acquire practical skills and become job creators.

“Technical and vocational education remains a viable pathway to self-reliance. I urge you to exploit this opportunity and equip yourselves with relevant skills that will make you employers of labour,” Aroge said.

Ojo also paid tribute to the pioneer Rector, Engr. Dr. Taofeek Adekunle Abdul-Hameed, for laying what he described as a solid foundation for the institution’s growth and development.

He further disclosed that the Federal Government had approved a 20-kilometre road project to improve access to the Polytechnic’s permanent site in Ayede, Ogo-Oluwa Local Government Area.
According to him, the road will run from Idi Araba Junction to the institution’s permanent site and extend to the Oolo community in Oriire Local Government Area, including internal access roads within the campus. The don lauded the federal government for what he described as timely intervention.

“Addressing access challenges will significantly enhance our relocation efforts and accelerate infrastructural and academic development,” he said.

The acting rector appealed to stakeholders, corporate organisations, alumni and philanthropists to partner with the institution to achieve sustainable growth.

He also appreciated parents and guardians for entrusting their wards to the Polytechnic, assuring them that the students would be groomed into responsible and productive members of society.

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday described the Federal Polytechnic Ayede as the best-performing among federal polytechnics established in 2021, commending its infrastructural expansion and academic stability as the institution graduated 325 students at its maiden convocation ceremony.

Tinubu, who is the Visitor to the institution, was represented by the Director, Polytechnics and Allied Institutions, Dr. Usman Ejeh. He said the polytechnic’s achievements within five years were “remarkable and strategic,” adding that its growth aligns with the Federal Government’s reform agenda for technical and vocational education.

“The Federal Polytechnic Ayede has distinguished itself among its peers established in 2021. Its commitment to infrastructure, skills acquisition, and academic stability clearly positions it as a model institution,” he said.

The President noted that his administration had introduced key reforms, including the students’ loan scheme under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, curriculum modernisation, infrastructural renewal, and digital skills expansion to reposition the education sector.

“We are determined to build institutions that will produce innovators, entrepreneurs, and solution providers for our economy,” he added, urging the management to consolidate on existing gains.

Earlier, the Rector, Dr. Taofeek Abdul-Hameed, described the combined convocation for the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 academic sessions as a defining milestone in the institution’s history.

“We gather here today to officially present to the world the first set of graduates produced by the Federal Polytechnic Ayede. This indeed calls for celebration,” he said.

The rector expressed appreciation to Tinubu for policies aimed at strengthening technical education and acknowledged the support of regulatory and funding agencies, including the National Board for Technical Education and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, for accreditation and infrastructural interventions that accelerated the institution’s development.

He disclosed that 138 students graduated in the 2023/2024 session and 187 in the 2024/2025 session, bringing the total number of graduands to 325.

According to him, Miss Taiwo Ibukunoluwa Arinola of Science Laboratory Technology and Mr. Olapese Quadri Ayofe of Agricultural Technology emerged as the overall best graduating students for their respective sessions with a cumulative grade point average of 3.96.

Beyond the award of National Diploma certificates, Abdul-Hameed said each graduand obtained at least two additional vocational certifications through the Centre for Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development.

“Our graduates are not just job seekers but employers of labour. We have deliberately equipped them with relevant entrepreneurial and technical competencies,” he said, adding that 68 major projects had been executed across the temporary and permanent sites through TETFund interventions, Federal Government appropriations, and donor support.

The projects, he said, include a main administrative building, ICT centre, health centre, engineering workshops, and improved power infrastructure, while the institution also recorded over 64 research projects and nine TETFund-supported fabrication innovations. He also reaffirmed the polytechnic’s resolve to relocate fully to its permanent site in Ayede, Ogo-Oluwa Local Government Area, and appealed for improved access roads and hostel accommodation.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Governing Council, Hon. Yakubu Dati, described the ceremony as a celebration of vision and collective commitment, urging government, corporate organisations, and well-meaning Nigerians to support the institution with critical infrastructure, particularly road networks and student hostels, through direct intervention or Public-Private Partnership arrangements. He commended the Federal Government, the Oyo State Government, and the host community for sustaining a peaceful environment, and appreciated the Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, who was also the guest lecturer, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, for supporting the construction of an access road to the institution.

Fellowship awards were conferred on the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas; the Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, Dr Zacch Adedeji; and Dr Abubakar Isa.

The event attracted traditional rulers, including the Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye; the Timi of Ede, Oba Adesola Munirudeen Lawal; and the Aresa of Iresapupa, Oba Moses Olayiwola Ajiboye, as well as Senators Ayo Adeseun, Abdulfatai Buhari, prominent Ogbomoso leaders, rectors of sister polytechnics, scholars, and other dignitaries.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Tajudeen Abbas, and the Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), Dr. Zacch Adelabu Adedeji, will on Thursday grace the maiden combined convocation ceremony of the Federal Polytechnic, Ayede, Oyo State, where no fewer than 325 students will be awarded National Diploma certificates.

The Pioneer Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Taofeek Abdul-Hameed, disclosed this on Monday during a pre-convocation press conference at the institution’s Permanent Site in Ayede, describing the event as “a defining milestone” in the history of the young federal institution.

“This is the first convocation of the Federal Polytechnic, Ayede, since its establishment on January 19, 2021, and it marks our transition from take-off to consolidation,” the Rector said.

Abdul-Hameed said the speaker would chair the convocation lecture, while the NRS boss, Adedeji would deliver the lecture titled, ‘The Role of Technology in Implementing Nigeria’s New Tax Laws: Challenges and Prospects’, noting that the calibre of invited dignitaries reflected the institution’s rising national profile.

“The presence of the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service underscores the growing relevance of the Polytechnic in national development discourse,” he said.

According to the Rector, the combined convocation covers the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 academic sessions and will span six days, featuring a novelty football match, convocation lecture, award of National Diploma certificates, and the conferment of fellowship honours.

He disclosed that 138 students completed their programmes in the 2023/2024 academic session, while 187 students graduated in the 2024/2025 session, bringing the total number of graduands to 325.

On academic expansion, Abdul-Hameed said the Polytechnic commenced academic activities in 2023 with four National Diploma programmes but has grown to run 13 fully accredited ND programmes across five schools.

“We currently operate across the Schools of Engineering, Environmental Technology, Management Sciences, Science and Technology, and Agricultural Technology, all with full NBTE accreditation,” he stated.

The Rector attributed the institution’s rapid growth to sustained support from the Federal Government under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alongside interventions from the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Board for Technical Education, and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.

“These interventions have strengthened our capacity in programme accreditation, staff development, and infrastructure delivery,” he said.

Abdul-Hameed further revealed that the Polytechnic had executed 68 major infrastructural, ICT, and utility projects across its Permanent and Temporary campuses, adding that work was ongoing on the access road linking the Permanent Site from Idi-Araba.

“While we have made significant progress, we still require support in access roads, student hostels, power supply, water facilities, and digital infrastructure to sustain our growth,” the Rector appealed.

The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP) has rejected the reviewed Schemes of Service for Nigerian Polytechnics prepared by the National Board for Technical Education, describing them as unfair and discriminatory against non-teaching staff.

The association disclosed this in a minority report submitted to the Minister of Education after a stakeholders’ meeting held in Abuja on Monday, January 19, 2026.

In the report signed by its National President, Comrade Philip Adebanjo Ogunsipe, SSANIP said the reviewed schemes introduced wide disparities between teaching and non-teaching staff, particularly at the entry point of employment in the polytechnic system.

According to the association, the schemes would also undermine career progression for non-teaching staff by preventing officers with first degrees from advancing to CONTEDISS 15, which is equivalent to Grade Level 17 in the federal public service.

Ogunsipe said documentary evidence confirming the existence of the CONTEDISS 15 salary structure, including records from the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission and the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation, were ignored during deliberations.

He also criticised comments attributed to the Chairman of the Committee of Heads of Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology of Nigeria, who reportedly stated that rectors and some non-teaching staff could not retire on the same grade level.

Describing the remarks as “demeaning, elitist and discriminatory,” Ogunsipe said they were inconsistent with extant public service rules.

“With this minority report, the association hereby passes a vote of no confidence in the ability of the NBTE to provide fair, balanced and acceptable schemes of service for polytechnics in Nigeria, given its persistent bias and disregard for established public service regulations,” he said.

The Union urged the Minister of Education to examine its protest objectively in the interest of equity, industrial harmony and strict adherence to public service norms.

Ogunsipe expressed confidence in the minister’s leadership, describing him as a dispassionate public servant, and said addressing SSANIP’s concerns would ensure that polytechnics are not denied the parity enjoyed by universities and colleges of education.

SSANIP also rejected the decision taken at the stakeholders’ meeting to exclude the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation from the preparation and approval of the reviewed schemes.

The union insisted that the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation remains the only federal government agency legally mandated to prepare and approve Schemes of Service for public institutions.

The Ogbomoso First Community Initiative on Wednesday officially handed over its Skills Acquisition Centre to the Federal Polytechnic, Ayede (FEDPA), Ogbomoso, in a move aimed at strengthening technical and vocational training for students and residents of the host community.

The handover ceremony, held at the Sir Ademola Dare-Williams Hall, O’First Group Centre, Oke Osuuru, Ogbomoso, also featured the signing of a two-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the initiative and FEDPA’s Centre for Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, formalising the use of the facility for technical and vocational training.

Speaking at the event, the President of O’First Group, Arch. Sakiru Suara, emphasised the need for practical skills in today’s economy. He said, “Education without practical skills is no longer sufficient. I urge trainees to complement their academic qualifications with vocational skills to create multiple sources of income.” Suara also credited the polytechnic’s Rector, Dr. Taofeek Abdul-Hameed, for ensuring that graduates acquire at least one practical skill before leaving the institution.

Reflecting on his personal journey, Suara recounted how his father’s work as a bricklayer shaped his own career, stressing the importance of vocational skills in personal and community development.

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Ogbomoso First Community Initiative, Otunba Bayo Babatunde, highlighted the group’s commitment to local development since its founding in 2009, citing initiatives such as distributing thousands of exercise books to students and empowering residents with vocational tools, including sewing machines and motorcycles.

Dr. Abdul-Hameed lauded the contributions of Ogbomoso indigenes, describing Suara as “a pillar of the polytechnic who facilitated its early take-off by providing the administrative building at the Iresa-Apa campus.” He further disclosed that the institution would soon benefit from another project facilitated by Prof. Jide Ajao, an indigene and council representative.

The Director of the Centre for Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, Mr. Christopher Owojori, represented by Mrs. Bulala Kafayat, said the programme targets mainly indigenes of Ogbomoso and environs under the Technical and Vocational Education and Training initiative.

She explained, “Each trainee will receive a monthly stipend, and the centre is funded to run the six-month programme successfully.”

A retired Commissioner of Police, Mr. Dejo Oyelowo, added that the two best-performing trainees would receive additional equipment to strengthen their entrepreneurial ventures.

Dignitaries at the ceremony included CP Dejo Oyelowo, Engr. Akinloye Oyekola, Chief Bayo Eegunbiyi, Prof. Jide Ajao, Deputy Rector (Academic) Dr. Azeez Olasunkanmi Ojo, Deputy Registrar Mr. Gafar Kolapo Olatinwo, the Polytechnic Librarian, Dr. Samuel Oke Ogunniyi, deans, directors, staff, and students.

The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP) on Monday inaugurated its pioneer executive officers at the Federal Polytechnic, Ayede (FEDPA), a move aimed at fostering industrial harmony and strengthening staff–management relations.

‎The event, which drew top management officials and national union leaders, was hailed as a major milestone in the growth of organised labour within the young institution.

‎Speaking at the occasion, SSANIP Vice President, Comrade Ayo Bankole, said the establishment of the union’s chapter at FEDPA reflected a commitment to building enduring, mutually beneficial partnerships with management.

‎“Unionism today goes beyond agitation and confrontation,” Bankole said, “modern labour relations focus on constructive engagement, collaboration, and collective responsibility for institutional growth.”

‎He praised the Rector, Dr Taofeek Abdul-Hameed, for his humility and inclusive leadership, saying such qualities are crucial to sustaining industrial peace.

‎Dr Abdul-Hameed, drawing from over 31 years’ experience in the polytechnic system, described unions as critical stakeholders in staff welfare and institutional development, adding that dialogue and mutual respect remain central to their effectiveness.

‎The Rector also reaffirmed management’s commitment to openness, constructive criticism, and continuous engagement with all recognised unions, while the Registrar, Mr Akin Odesola, described the inauguration as a progressive step for consolidating industrial harmony.

‎Elections for interim executive positions were conducted under the supervision of the SSANIP national leadership. Alhaji Idris Ismail emerged as Chairman with 26 votes out of 46, followed by Comrade Idowu Ayodele as Vice Chairman, and Mr Adewole Aderemi as Public Relations Officer.

‎Other officers included Arch Ishola Maruf (Secretary), Mr Jimoh Adekunle (Assistant Secretary), and Miss Alanu Titilayo (Treasurer).

Two students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, have been arrested by the police for allegedly conspiring to drug and rape a 20-year-old female undergraduate of the institution.

The spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, Olusola Ayanlade, announced this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Akure, the state capital.

According to him, preliminary investigations showed that the victim was invited to the residence of her long-time friend, 19-year-old Queen Sodo, also a student of the Ondo varsity.

“Trusting in the longevity of their friendship, which began in secondary school and continued into university, the victim accepted a drink provided by her friend, which was later found to have been laced with drugs, causing her to lose consciousness,” the statement read.

Ayanlade said once the victim became incapacitated, Sodo allegedly stepped out of the room, summoned her male co-conspirator and kept watch while the act was being carried out.

He added that a neighbour became suspicious after hearing unusual and inconsistent noises coming from the room and immediately raised the alarm.

“The victim was subsequently rescued by a neighbour who noticed the strange noise,” he stated. “She was found naked, unconscious and in a compromising position with the arrested male suspect, and was immediately taken for urgent medical attention.”

Ayanlade said the victim was later referred to a specialist hospital for comprehensive treatment and was currently recuperating.

He further noted that the suspects had confessed to their involvement and roles in the crime. Exhibits recovered from the scene included the bottle of the drug-laced drink identified by both the suspects and the victim.

The police spokesman added that the suspects were being held in lawful custody and would be transferred to the Gender Desk Office in Akure for further discreet investigation and prosecution.

Ayanlade assured residents that the command remained committed to tracking down criminal elements in the state and ensuring they face the full weight of the law.
