The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved the dismissal and prosecution of an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Nuhu Usman, over the killing of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.

The decision followed the outcome of a review by the Force Disciplinary Committee, which examined the circumstances surrounding the incident and other related internal disciplinary procedures.

Addressing an emergency press conference in Abuja on Friday, the IGP said the officer, alongside members of his team found culpable in the matter, had been recommended for dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force.

According to him, the police panel established that the officer acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other extant regulations guiding the use of firearms.

He said, “The disciplinary committee recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman, as well as other officers found culpable in the incident.

“Upon dismissal, all officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities to face criminal charges for unlawful homicide.”

Disu added that he had approved the recommendations and forwarded them to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.

The IGP reiterated that the Nigeria Police Force maintains zero tolerance for extrajudicial killings, abuse of power and all forms of misconduct.

He said, “No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law. Any officer who violates this fundamental principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences.”

Disu also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, 28-year-old Mene Ogidi, assuring them that the incident would not be treated lightly.

He said the Force remained committed to ensuring that justice was not only done but seen to be done in a manner that would reinforce public confidence and institutional accountability.

The IGP urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, stressing that the police remained committed to discipline, professionalism and the protection of the rights and dignity of all citizens.

The killing of Ogidi has sparked outrage on social media. According to the police, the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, when operatives attached to Area Command Effurun acted on intelligence that the deceased had been apprehended while allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.

The Ogun State Magistrate’s Court sitting in Sagamu has adjourned the trial of the driver involved in the road crash that affected former heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, to June 2, 2026.

The court, presided over by Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun, fixed the new date to allow the prosecution to file fresh charges in the case.

The defendant, Adeniyi Mobolaji, is facing a four-count charge bordering on dangerous and negligent driving resulting in death.

It was gathered that the matter had been adjourned about four times to enable the prosecuting counsel, G. O. Ogunyomi, amend the charges before the court.

Mobolaji was accused of reckless and negligent driving, contrary to Section 6(1) of the relevant law, as well as driving without due care and attention, causing bodily harm, and damage to property under Section 7(1).

He was also alleged to have driven without a valid national driver’s licence, contrary to Section 10(1) of the Federal Highway Act.

Ruling on the prosecution’s application for adjournment, the magistrate granted the request and fixed June 2 for proper hearing. The defence counsel did not oppose the application.

Speaking after the proceedings, counsel to the defendant, Abiodun Olalekan, said the adjournment was necessary to ensure justice for all parties involved.

The 46-year-old defendant was involved in the fatal crash that claimed the lives of Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, along the Lagos-Ibadan

Expressway on December 29, 2025.
The Lexus SUV conveying the boxer collided with a stationary truck, leaving Joshua and the driver with minor injuries.

Joshua was later discharged from the hospital after being certified clinically stable.

The deaths of Ayodele and Ghami drew widespread reactions within the international boxing community, where both men were regarded as key figures in Joshua’s camp.

Their remains were subsequently repatriated to the United Kingdom, where a funeral prayer was held on January 4, 2026, at the London Central Mosque.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 58-year-old alleged drug lord, Uzoma Valentine Ilomuanya, who had reportedly been on the agency’s wanted list and that of British authorities for over 15 years.

Ilomuanya was apprehended in Lagos on Monday, February 23, 2026, following what the agency described as a high-level, coordinated operation by officers of its Special Operations Unit.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Director of Media and Advocacy of the agency, Femi Babafemi.

Babafemi said the suspect’s arrest ended a prolonged manhunt linked to his alleged involvement in drug trafficking activities across Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

According to the statement, Ilomuanya was first arrested in February 2003 in the United Kingdom and convicted for drug trafficking.

He was sentenced to nine years imprisonment but was released after serving two years following a successful appeal.

Babafemi added that the suspect was again arrested in the UK in July 2011 over drug-related offences.

He said, “He was granted administrative bail but jumped jurisdiction and fled to Nigeria.

“Typical of a recidivist, Ilomuanya was in November 2018 arrested in Nigeria by NDLEA operatives following the discovery of two clandestine methamphetamine laboratories in his Obinugwu, Orlu Local Government Area country home in Imo State and at his No. 3 Barrister Declan Uzoma Close, Lagos residence where officers recovered 77.960 kilograms of methamphetamine and extensive production equipment.

“He was subsequently charged before a Federal High Court in Lagos, after which he jumped court bail and has been on the run since then.”

Reacting to the development, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), described the arrest as a major breakthrough in the agency’s ongoing war against drug trafficking networks.

Marwa said the operation demonstrated the agency’s resolve to track down criminal elements regardless of how long they evade the law.

He said, “This arrest serves as a stern warning to those who think they can hide behind borders to escape justice.

“Whether you jump bail in London or set up clandestine labs in your village, the long arm of the NDLEA will eventually catch up with those who choose to undermine the health, security, and future of our nation.

“We remain committed to our international collaborations to ensure that Nigeria is not used as a sanctuary for global drug lords.”

Marwa also commended officers of the Special Operations Unit for their professionalism and persistence in tracking down the suspect.

He added that the agency would continue to strengthen intelligence-driven operations and international cooperation to dismantle drug trafficking networks operating within and beyond Nigeria.

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday discharged and acquitted a suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, of a 23-count charge bordering on alleged non-declaration of assets filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

Delivering judgment, Justice James Omotosho held that the prosecution failed to present sufficient evidence to substantiate the allegations against the defendants.

Kyari was arraigned alongside his two brothers, who were accused of swearing to false affidavits in an alleged attempt to conceal the origin of certain properties.

However, the court ruled that the anti-drug agency failed to establish that the properties allegedly not declared by Kyari were actually owned by him.

Justice Omotosho explained that ownership of landed property could be established through traditional history, title documents, acts of possession, or possession by connection.

According to the judge, the prosecution did not present any of these forms of evidence to prove that the properties located at Fountain Estate in Karsana, said to belong to Ramatu Kyari, were owned by the suspended police officer.

The court also held that the prosecution failed to produce material evidence linking Kyari to properties located on Linda Choko Road in Asokoro, Abuja, as well as properties in Maiduguri, Borno State.

In his defence, Kyari maintained that the properties in Borno State belonged to his late father, who bequeathed them to him and his siblings.

The judge held that the prosecution failed to prove otherwise.

Justice Omotosho also faulted the prosecution for charging Kyari’s brothers with conspiracy, describing the allegation as unsubstantiated.

He described the NDLEA’s case as weak and lacking credible evidence, adding that the defendant had served the country well and should not be subjected to persecution.

The Federal Government yesterday advised Nigerians living in the Middle East, particularly in the Islamic Republic of Iran and neighbouring Gulf states, to take extra security precautions following rising military tensions in the region.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is closely monitoring developments involving reported military operations carried out by Israel and the United States against targets in Iran, as well as subsequent retaliatory actions affecting parts of the Gulf.

The government urged Nigerians in the affected areas to remain vigilant and avoid strategic or sensitive locations such as military bases and government installations that could become flashpoints for further hostilities.

It also advised citizens to limit non-essential movement and refrain from participating in or attending public gatherings and demonstrations until the security situation stabilises.

“Nigerian citizens are strongly advised to comply with directives issued by local security authorities. Cooperation with host authorities is critical to ensuring personal safety,” the statement said.

Diplomatic missions, including the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran and consular offices in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, have been placed on high alert to assist Nigerians and facilitate communication where necessary.

The advisory followed reports of airstrikes on sites in Iranian cities, with explosions and plumes of smoke observed in the capital.

United States officials described the operations as efforts to neutralise security threats, while Israeli authorities characterised them as preventive and defensive measures.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States aimed to eliminate what he described as imminent dangers and vowed to destroy missile infrastructure linked to Iran’s defence capabilities. Israeli officials similarly framed the operations as defensive.

International reactions have been cautious. The African Union expressed concern over the potential impact on regional and global stability, urging restraint from all sides.

The European Union also reacted, with European Council President Antonio Costa describing the developments as troubling and confirming that European leaders remain in contact with regional partners.

The Federal Government reiterated that the safety and welfare of Nigerians abroad remain a priority and appealed to all parties involved to de-escalate hostilities and return to dialogue in the interest of global peace and stability.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Thursday admitted former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), and his son, Abdulaziz, to N200m bail each over alleged terrorism financing and unlawful possession of firearms.

The court, however, ordered that the defendants be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the perfection of the bail conditions.

Ruling on separate bail applications moved by their counsel, Joseph Daudu (SAN), Justice Abdulmalik held that each of the defendants must produce two sureties in like sum.

The judge directed that one of the sureties must own landed property in Maitama or Asokoro, Abuja, and deposit the title documents with the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court.

The sureties were also ordered to submit valid international passports, depose to affidavits of means and file two recent passport photographs.

Malami and his son were equally directed to surrender their international passports and submit their recent passport photographs to the court.
The judge subsequently adjourned the case till March 4 for the commencement of trial.

The defendants were arraigned by the Department of State Services on a five-count charge bordering on alleged terrorism financing and illegal possession of firearms.

In count one, the DSS alleged that Malami, while serving as AGF and Minister of Justice, knowingly abetted terrorism financing by refusing to prosecute suspected financiers of terrorism whose case files were allegedly forwarded to him.

The prosecution further accused Malami and Abdulaziz of warehousing firearms at their residence in Gesse Phase II Area, Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, without lawful authority.

According to the charge, the defendants were found in possession of a Sturm Magnum 17-0101 firearm, 16 Redstar AAA 5720 live rounds of cartridges and 27 expended Redstar AAA 5’20 cartridges, offences said to be contrary to the provisions of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022 and the Firearms Act, 2004.

The Ogun State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough with the arrest of 14 suspected cultists around the Israel, Ipara and Ode axis of the state for unlawful assembly and breach of public peace.

The suspects were apprehended during an ongoing sweep operation aimed at curbing criminality and threats to public safety across the state.

Spokesperson of the command, CSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the operation led to the recovery of three locally made pistols, 11 live cartridges, four rounds of 9mm Beretta ammunition, criminal charms, confraternity caps and a drum allegedly used for cult initiation.

Other items recovered include 19 mobile phones, a Samsung mini laptop and nine vehicles of various brands, some without registration plates and others bearing unauthorised dealer plates.

Babaseyi said actionable intelligence received at about 1:20 a.m. indicated that members of the Eiye Confraternity had gathered in large numbers at a bush location in Ipara-Remo, allegedly planning to initiate new members and conspire to breach public peace through unlawful assembly.

He explained that operatives of the Anti-Cultism Unit and the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), supported by personnel from the Ipara and Isara divisions, swiftly carried out a coordinated operation at the location.

“Fourteen suspects were arrested, comprising 13 males and one female,” the police spokesman said.

Those arrested were identified as Solomon Shobamiwo, also known as ‘Solo Hot’; Farooq Ogunsola; Toheeb Abolade; Balogun Williams; Ayodele Abdulkareem; Adedapo Ogunsanya; Toheeb Saka; Akpan Dara; Micheal Olakemi; Habeeb Olayinka; Dapo Adeola; Adetunji Adeyemi; Henry Kingsley, and Nanso Blessing.

Babaseyi added that the suspects are currently undergoing investigation and will be charged to court upon completion of the probe.

He assured residents that the command has sustained its intelligence-led patrols and sweep operations across the axis to apprehend fleeing suspects and ensure peace, security and public safety in affected communities.

The Oyo State Government has been warned to stay off a disputed parcel of land along the Total Garden–NTA–Government House axis of Ibadan following a subsisting interlocutory injunction issued by the Oyo State High Court.

The caution was contained in a legal notice issued by Adebayo & Gbadamosi, counsel to the claimant in a pending suit against the Attorney General of Oyo State before the High Court of Justice, Oyo State.

According to the notice, the land remains the subject of ongoing litigation, and an interlocutory injunction granted on June 30, 2025, restraining the state government from interfering with the property, “subsists till date.”

The law firm warned that any action by the Oyo State Government, its agents, servants, or privies in defiance of the court order would amount to contempt of court.

“Any move and or attempt by the Government of Oyo State, its agents, servants, and or privies to flout the order of the court shall be contemptuous of the court and the same shall be met with appropriate sanctions,” the notice stated.

The notice, dated January 19, 2025, was signed by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Asiwaju Mutalubi Ojo Adebayo, on behalf of the firm.

The lawyers urged the state government and members of the public to take due notice of the subsisting court order and refrain from any act capable of undermining the authority of the court pending the determination of the suit.

The Supreme Court has dismissed the appeal filed by Aminu Sule Lamido, son of former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, challenging his conviction for failure to declare $40,000 at an airport.
In a unanimous judgment, the apex court held that the appeal lacked merit and affirmed the decisions of the trial court and the Court of Appeal.

Aminu was arrested on December 11, 2012, by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport while preparing to travel to Cairo, Egypt.

The prosecution told the court that he declared $10,000 to the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) but was found in possession of an additional $40,000, which was not disclosed on his currency declaration form.

He was subsequently charged before the Federal High Court in Kano on a one-count charge of false declaration of foreign currency, contrary to the provisions of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act.

On July 12, 2015, the trial court convicted him and ordered the forfeiture of 25 per cent of the undeclared sum to the Federal Government.

Dissatisfied with the ruling, Aminu approached the Court of Appeal, Kaduna Division, seeking to set aside the conviction and the forfeiture order.

However, in a judgment delivered on December 7, 2015, the appellate court dismissed the appeal, a decision now upheld by the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has ordered that the trial of former Governor Sule Lamido, his two sons and others over alleged ₦1.35 billion fraud should continue before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

A five-member panel of the apex court gave the directive in two unanimous judgments delivered in appeals filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The apex court upheld the ruling of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which dismissed the no-case submissions filed by the defendants and held that they had a case to answer.

The appeals were against the July 25, 2023 judgments of the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, which upheld the no-case submissions by Lamido and others and struck out the 37-count charge on the grounds that the Federal High Court lacked jurisdiction to hear the case.
In the lead judgment, Justice Abubakar Umar set aside the Court of Appeal’s decision and affirmed the earlier ruling of Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which overruled the no-case submissions and ordered the defendants to enter their defence.

The EFCC alleged that Lamido, while serving as governor between 2007 and 2015, abused his office by laundering funds allegedly received as kickbacks from companies awarded contracts by the Jigawa State Government.

Those charged alongside him are his sons, Aminu and Mustapha Lamido; Aminu Wada Abubakar; and their companies, Bamaina Holdings Limited and Speeds International Limited.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the interim forfeiture of 57 landed properties allegedly linked to a former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), and two of his sons, Abdulaziz and Abiru-Rahman.

The properties, valued at about ₦213.23bn, are suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities and are located in Abuja, Kebbi, Kano and Kaduna states.

Justice Emeka Nwite made the order on Monday after granting an ex parte application filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The application was argued by counsel to the EFCC, Ekele Iheanacho (SAN).

In his ruling, Justice Nwite ordered that the assets listed in the schedule attached to the motion be temporarily forfeited to the Federal Government.

The judge said, “It is hereby ordered that an interim order of this honourable court is hereby made forfeiting to the Federal Government of Nigeria the properties described in Schedule 1 below, which are reasonably suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities.”

Justice Nwite further directed that the interim forfeiture order be published in a national daily newspaper, inviting any person or organisation with interest in the properties to appear before the court within 14 days to show cause why a final forfeiture order should not be made.

He adjourned the matter till January 27, 2026, for a report of compliance.

₦8.7bn laundering trial

Malami, his wife, Bashir Asabe, and his son, Abubakar Abdulaziz, are currently standing trial before Justice Nwite over an alleged ₦8.7bn money laundering charge.

The properties listed for interim forfeiture include university buildings, agro-allied factory buildings, hotels, supermarkets, pharmacies, oil and gas filling stations, primary and secondary schools, shops and other commercial and residential buildings.

Among the assets are a luxury duplex on Amazon Street, Plot 3011, Cadastral Zone A06, Maitama, Abuja, reportedly purchased in December 2022 for ₦500m and later enhanced to an estimated value of ₦5.95bn.

Also listed is a two-winged storey building at 3 Onitsha Crescent, Area 11, Garki, Abuja, formerly Harmonia Hotels Limited, acquired in December 2018 for ₦7bn.

Others include a five-storey building on Plot 683, Jabi District, now operating as Meethaq Hotels Ltd with 53 rooms, purchased in September 2020 at carcass level for ₦850m, with an additional ₦300m paid to take possession, and now valued at about ₦8.4bn.

The list further contains terraces at property No. 3130, Cadastral Zone A04, Asokoro District, Abuja, bought in January 2021 for ₦360m, and Meethaq Hotels Limited, Maitama, located at No. 3 Rhine Street, Abuja, purchased in February 2018 for ₦430m and reportedly valued at about ₦12.95bn after rehabilitation.

Other affected assets include properties in Asokoro, Wuse II, Gwarimpa and Apo Legislative Quarters in Abuja; residential and commercial buildings in Kano; a 100-hectare parcel of land along Birnin Kebbi–Jega Road; a four-bedroom bungalow in Birnin Kebbi; and residential properties in Kaduna.
