Benue: PDP cancels rally as accident claims many lives

At least 10 persons reportedly met their untimely death in an unfortunate fatal auto accident that occurred Friday afternoon involving the convoy of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue state.

PDP stakeholders and party faithful were heading to Obagaji, the headquarters of Agatu local government area for the flag-off campaign for Benue South candidates of the party in the 2019 general elections.

The party has consequently cancelled the proposed mega rally, which was also billed for the defection ceremony of over 2000 members of opposition parties.

According to eyewitness account, an on-coming motorcycle rammned into the PDP convoy around Ojinebe village in Adoka, Otukpo local government area, causing another on-coming Toyota Sienna to lose control with head-on collision with an 18-seater bus and a Volkswagen Golf car.

“The Sienna, in an attempt to dodge the bike lost control and faced the 18-seater bus, thereby causing accident for the golf coming behind,” the source said.

Addressing supporters of the party in Agatu, the PDP state chairman, Sir John Ngbede said the proposed flag-off campaign would no longer hold, “as a mark of honour on the lives that were lost”.

Reacting to the development, the senatorial candidate of the party, Comrade Abba Moro, said “in honour of our brothers and sister that have died, trying to honour the party, this rally for the flag off of the Benue South senatorial district, otherwise known as Zone C campaign, is hereby cancelled.

“I pray to God Almighty that as you go back to your various homes, that God will grant you journey mercies, I also promise, that as soon as arrangements are made for the burial of our fallen members and heroes, you will be adequately informed”.

About five victims, who sustained various degrees of injuries, according to Moro, are to be moved to specialist hospitals in the cities, as ordered by Governor Samuel Ortom for orthopaedic and other special attention.

The official flag-off was supposed to be for the presentation of flags to all the House of Assembly, House of Representatives candidates as well as the Senatorial candidate of the party.

Hoodlums Attack, Raze Neni Divisional Police Station in Anambra

A group of about thirty hoodlums launched an assault on the Neni Divisional Police station situated in the Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The incident, which occurred at approximately 2 am on Thursday, left a trail of destruction, with several buildings reportedly damaged.

According to reports emerging from the scene, the assailants utilised Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) to carry out the attack. Despite the chaos unleashed by the attackers, the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that no firearms were taken, and no police personnel were kidnapped during the assault.

SP Ikenga emphasised that the law enforcement response was swift and effective, resulting in the dispersal of the attackers.

He noted that the police operatives deployed superior firepower, compelling the hoodlums to retreat. Tactical operations remain ongoing in the area to ensure the safety and security of residents.

While details regarding the extent of the damage inflicted on the police facility were not immediately provided, Ikenga assured the public that comprehensive updates on the unfortunate incident would be made available soon.

Cult Clash Leaves One Dead, Many Injured In Ilorin {Photos}

A clash between a suspected cult group in the Pakata area of Ilọrin West Local Government Area, Kwara State, has resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries, along with significant vehicular damage.

According to reports, the violence erupted when Abiodun, a suspected cultist, shot Yusuf, a member of a rival group, following a weekend disagreement.

Yusuf, who had recently celebrated his marriage to his pregnant wife, tragically lost his life in the altercation.

Abiodun fled the scene following the incident and is currently evading authorities.

However, tensions escalated when members of Yusuf’s alleged group retaliated by storming Abiodun’s residence at Gana Compound on Saturday.

Armed with firearms, cutlasses, and other dangerous weapons, they sought to avenge Yusuf’s death.

The reprisal attack destroyed numerous vehicles and left many individuals injured. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as gunfire erupted and people scattered in panic.

“They later invaded the compound and attacked family members sighted with machetes, leaving many injured,” a source revealed.

Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, the spokesperson for the Kwara Police Command, confirmed the incident, stating that investigations are ongoing.

Prison Inmate Shoots Roadside Vulcaniser in Ilorin

In a shocking incident at the Oke-Kura Correctional Centre on Friday morning, a prison inmate managed to seize a warder’s rifle and shot a roadside vulcaniser in close proximity.

The victim, an unidentified vulcaniser, sustained gunshot wounds to the stomach, leading to immediate panic among residents.

The unsettling event unfolded at approximately 8:00 a.m. when a group of prison inmates was being led out of the facility. Seizing the opportunity, one inmate took control of a warder’s rifle and discharged several rounds, hitting the unsuspecting vulcaniser.

The wounded vulcaniser was swiftly transported to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment, while the assailant was apprehended and is currently held at the ‘C’ Division Police station, Isale-Ojo, in the Ilorin metropolis.

Eyewitnesses reported chaotic scenes as residents scrambled for safety during the alarming incident.

Authorities are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the inmate’s access to the weapon and the events leading up to the shooting.
