ATLETICO MADRID have contacted Mesut Ozil, offering the Arsenal star a return to Spain next summer, for nothing.
Arsenal are desperate to offload the German international, who becomes a free agent next summer, and has so far given no indication he is willing to sign a new deal with the Premier League side.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger remains defiant in public, but must be fearing the worst with Alexis Sanchez set to leave and £100million worth of talent walking out the door for nothing at the end of the season.
Potentially, a return to the Spanish capital would be appealing to the playmaker who spent three years at the Bernabeu until his switch to North London in 2013.
Atletico boss Diego Simeone is looking to take advantage of the uncertaincy at the Emirates by offering Ozil a deal of around £200,000-a-week, with a huge signing on fee as free agent at the end of the season.
However, Ozil and his representatives reportedly asked Arsenal for a whopping £330,000-a-week deal, but with no takers among Europe’s elite, he will have to climbdown from those numbers if he is serious about staying at the club or moving back to Spain.
The Spaniards are keen to add attacking options next summer and eye Ozil as the type of marquee signing to appease the fans if Saul Niguez is sold to Manchester United.
Ozil, 28, has polarised opinions among the Arsenal faithful during his time in England.
And despite to crticism, the playmaker has pitched in with 33 goals in all competitions, 25 in the Premier League with 44 assists.
